Customers have been telling me to smile at work, lately.
They say I "look so serious" when I'm working and I should smile. This happens when I'm face to face with customers at the register.

My natural disposition isn't very cheery or lively. Especially when I'm working hard.
It doesn't feel natural when I try to force myself to look approachable. Only on good days am I cheery and welcoming.

My ascendant has progressed into Libra. Can I learn anything from Libra risers?

Oh yeaaah thats very important in retail!!!

SMILE.

I'm always really friendly and warm with customers.
I try and make then feel comfortable especially when they're asking for help.
When you don't smile it seems like youre bothered by them even if your not.

It goes a long way too older people always praise me and write up nice comments and I get extra cash every time we get a nice review. I don't know if your company does that.

The problem with our generation is were too moody.
I always leave my **** at home and come to work with a happy disposition regardless of how I'm feeling.

What planet is on your 6th house cusp? I just read today that that shows the sort of traits you need for your job.

Mine is Leo so I need to be more outgoing and commanding for work but they aren't traits that comes naturally to me... got to make it work though :-)

poster Gemmy has posted a similar thread. we go through the same thing. we agree that us serious looking people cannot wear a fixed smile because that would be scary. people just need to be more thoughtful in how they approach others.

i had similar experiences in my old job. i would get really ****** whenever coworkers or complete strangers would bark at me to "smile"; "why the long face?", "cheer up, it can't be that bad" WHAT IS WRONG WITH FREAKING "HELLO" DUMB***?. seriously they could have just said hello and pulled a smile themselves and i'd have been more cordial.

i don't do it and i don't make excuses for other peoples rudeness. for me, to go up to a stranger and order them to cheer up is so far beyond rude and ignorant its not funny. you dont know why type of day that person is having or they could be going through a rough time or are terribly sad about something. i don't expect anyone to put on a show for me when i go to buy something. i get annoyed when people act too cheery and ask me loads of questions. im friendly but some people just try too hard, it gets annoying. i don't care if someones grumpy. i just want to pay for my stuff and leave and i figure they hate their job just as much as i did.

ps: i think anyone who would be offended by a random checkout girl's sullen mood should either seriously consider getting a life or throw themselves under a bus

I worked retail for a number of years and found that the best way to smile when I'm not in the mood is to smile like I'm "up to something." That mischievous smile can sometimes be enough to get customers curious as to what you're smiling about. You've got to be careful, though, because if you don't give it your all, people might think you're smiling as if you're laughing at them, so it helps to have something on your mind in case someone asks.

I must be a lousy customer because I don't really care if the person is smiling or not!

The ONLY thing I care, is their attitude.

Understandable, but some customers feel an employee's attitude is reflected in their facial expression.

Bullsh...Smile only if you feel like it. It's not your duty to fake smiles.

I'd rather talk to a person with a serious face than looking like this:

Or this:

------------------
I'm sooo happy! I mean, cappy.

By giving me a mischievous smile I would think the person is high. If he/she is smiling at me as if perched on a hilltop, I won't feel like talking to him/her.

The vocal tone and inflection is very important, someone can have a very friendly approach without having to smile silly.

Well, Jessica, smiling is kinda nice. It just looks like you are having a better time working when you smile, but if your feet hurt or something, or if you feel uncomfortable, it's kinda hard to do on a continual basis.

I would prefer customer service be friendly and smile but if one isn't, I tell myself it's because they aren't feeling well or are uncomfortable and they are in bad mood, not because of me, it's because something is going on inside so I don't worry about it.

Of course it's nice to smile. When you genuinely feel like smiling. A pleasant disposition is of course desired, but since we are talking about people at a job, it's unrealistic to expect the person who is offering (good) customer service to smile at us. well, as a customer, I don't expect to be smiled at. Till now I haven't really thought about it. First and foremost I expect the person to help me get what I want. Basically that's it. I prefer to deal with a helpful unsmiling person that someone who is too lazy to move their butts.I have had to deal with total B's who smiled prettily at me, " sorry ma'am, we can't help you''

huh....do you think may be it's because am cap rising? I rarely smile myself

Actually I'm happier when they ignore me, until I am trying to find something. Funny thing is, they are all over me when I first enter the store, before I discover I can't find what I need, once I discover that, they disappear and none are to be found anywhere. It makes me cringe a little when several of them say "can I help you" when I first enter the store. It's just...awkward...for me. It's because I am fairly independent and like doing things on my own unless I become completely perplexed and mystified or the store has sold out of whatever it is I want.

When a worker looks unhappy I just tell myself their feet hurt. Nothing worse than achy feet!

To me, smiling isn't about what they're doing with their mouth, it's about what they're doing with their EYES. You can always tell when a smile is "pasted on" -- Don't do it! But if the eyes are "lively" and alert, the mouth can be in a neutral position (not frowning or sour), and a person will still look pleasant and approachable. I think that's really what customers want - employees that look approachable and willing to help when needed.

I don't want to be pounced on when walking into a store (as several others have mentioned). A pleasant welcome or a "let me know if I can help you" by ONE employee is okay if it's relaxed and natural.

For me - this wasn't a problem... more like the opposite (I had a problem with behaving like happy go lucky in front of costumers - though, none complained... ^^)... At first I tend to smile while talking with a customer - but sometimes i start laughing and can't stop. And the ironical part about it... it's not a real laughter and neither was the smile, but it can fool everybody - and i do mean "everybody"...because it's not forced - it comes out on it's own when I'm around strangers (sometimes - even around people i know). It's kinda ironical to be honest... cause there are times when i feel like a mess inside - and that smile keeps showing up... !

So... hey goatcat - as far as I'm concerned, being able to keep a serious face and smiling only when you have something to smile about - that sounds like a trait I wouldn't mind having. Hahaha... Fu'k the costumers - they're not always right! !

I've been told this several times and it greatly annoys me. I treat all my customers at work with kindness and respect and I try to help them out whenever I can. Just because I'm not smiling doesn't mean I'm rude or that I hate you. Mostly, this happens when I'm casually doing my job or when I'm not at work, just doing errands. As much as it might surprise people, I don't owe anyone a smile.

I just find the whole thing rude and entitling.

i'm not the type of person to glare at people but thats what i started to do. people think shop workers are punching bags because they are meant to act happy all the time and aren't allowed to defend themselves. i think to try to intimidate or mock a person who is stuck behind a counter at work is cowardly and stupid. i'm a pretty happy-go-lucky person (believe it or not) but i definately dont put on act if i don't feel like it. i would help out the customer where i could, run around do whatever etc. but you don't need to be grinning the whole time unless you are trying to make the person uncomfortable
