Is the standard orb % at Astro good enough or should I minimize? I am assuming an 8-10 degree orb is not very powerful?

Yeah, especially in synastry, you should reduce orbs to 80% or so, at least.
If you want the closest aspects, go for 50% or less.

40% makes your synastry/natal look so barren!
I'd say go with what you can feel.
