I didn't read or watch 50 SoG because from what I've heard about it - I probably wouldn't like the plot much. My impression is that it portrays the characters in very stereotyped (and unrealistic!) gender roles, i.e. she wants love, a relationship etc - while he wants sex and is emotionally impaired. Is this correct?I wouldn't mind the plot if the characters were reversed - if his role was female and her role was male. At least that would be something different. Someone should make a parody along these lines lol :edit: That's an interesting observation about the character's surname in The Secretary. I've never noticed that before. If 50SoG was indeed inspired by The Secretary - It seems to me like it doesn't live up to the original. I guess I should read and watch it before I comment though. IP: Logged |

Scorpio and virgo.women with strong virgo tolerate far more than any other woman of the zodiac, including pisces. Same goes for the men but I have seen virgo women take crap from men Noone should have to take. For a long time. And she keeps going back.. Pisces women like being pampered. IP: Logged |

I've heard a lot about 50 SoG and read quite a bit by BDSM folk and such who shared about what was in it and also read the cheat notes...heck, here they are on the tropes used, averted, and mixed up a bit: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Literature/FiftyShadesOfGrey Not my cup of tea...though I'll only raise a fuss if someone says "all women want someone like Christian Grey" or "Christian Grey wasn't abusive, it's fine for men to act like that toward women, such as raping women who reject them until they submit to his wishes, at least if she ends up enjoying it." (To be clear this is why some in the BDSM community hate being associated with Christian Grey or even Anna, like this guy. Also to be clear I repeat, I've nothing against the book itself as long as no one--male or female--encourages men to think of Christian Grey as someone real life men should aspire to be, or says that all women want a man like Grey. Maybe it could use some content warning, but then I can think of plenty of books that deserve content warning much more than 50 SoG, and it's hard to believe that people who read it don't have some idea what's in it already.) IIRC (from having it summed up for me) she even breaks up with him at the end (if he aggressively comes after her again over it the book doesn't say) so that it was more of a torrid affair before finding Mr. Right as opposed to turning the Beast into a Prince as normally happens in romance novels. The Secretary might be different, more playful than abusive, I don't know. I plan to look at those clips later, and who knows, maybe I'll even see it (don't think I'll ever watch 50 SoG, however). After all, the Secretary didn't receive anywhere as much harsh criticism as 50 SoG (but then I don't recall hearing about the Secretary when it came out so maybe plenty missed it). IP: Logged |
