Some history

Uranus and Pluto were conjunct in Virgo 1963-68. During this time a lot of intense stuff happened...

- back to nature movement.
- growing experimentation with communes and alternative communities.
- growth in use of oriental medicine (at least on the west coast).
- Beatlemania began in the USA; many rock stars were created during these years.
- coups and revolutions took place in Cuba, Iraq, China and many other nations and Kenya gained its independence.
- the US got involved in a war in Vietnam.
- the women's movement surged (second wave feminism) and The Equal Pay Act became law in the US.
- white Americans marched peacefully alongside black Americans in the south for civil rights; things got nasty as the police and racists responded with violence in the south.
- Many elected officials, government officials and activists were assassinated: US President John Kennedy; Lee Harvey Oswald; activist Medgar Evers; Martin Luther King Jr; US Attorney General and presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy; Malcolm X
- the Voting Rights Act of 1965 & The Civil Rights Act of 1968 brought black Americans more into the mainstream of society, effectively ending segregation as the norm.

This is a very abbreviated list. It was as if there was far more happening in a more compacted time frame than usual. Even if you were not personally involved in any of these movements or events, you could not avoid being affected by them. The change was intense and far-reaching.

The principles involved

Uranus = the individual collectively, free access/movement/connection. Higher communication.

Pluto = power, total consciousness. Transformation.

You can see how these two fusing together could create some dramatic changes in society and in one's personal life. The key with Uranus-Pluto aspects/transits is in rolling with the changes that are inevitable and not fighting them. Otherwise, you may fall into victimhood as if it were all happening TO you and not springing from some part of your soul, your own consciousness.

The Current Uranus-Pluto Square

The current Uranus square Pluto transit will carry on (within 5*) until early 2017. Some of us will not be experiencing both planets transiting our charts because our natal points/planets lie earlier in their signs.

Uranus urges us outside our box of familiarity to connect with more of the world, more of the universe. It is an air/sky principle that can take us over a land-locked horizon to what we cannot currently see.

For many people this means changes in their work lives that can allow them to be freer -- eventually -- and/or to apply more of their consciousness to what they are doing. It can also mean the often abrupt end of relationships that were not strong enough to withstand some shaking.

Pluto urges us to go deeper and draw on something deep enough it may not be communicated until well after the transformation is over. Transformation is the action.

This influence may also mean the end of a relationship that cannot withstand some shaking (or two people being empowered). However, Pluto-related issues will carry on their process of transformation no matter who you are with or even if you are in a relationship. The transformation is happening in you.

This Uranus-Pluto square has been hitting points/planets at around 8-12* of cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) pretty hard now for nearly 2 years. It will be moving through 12-16* for the next couple years.

These effects can involve sudden upsets, imposed changes, personal effects from political/legal changes, banking problems. Physical effects can range, but generally involve nerve/glandular imbalances or changes in elimination.

On a personal level this transit triggers:

- Ripening of problems that have been festering just below the surface for a while; this can mean anything of deep significance, old resentments, unequal relationships involving spouse, bosses, etc. It can also mean

- Detoxification from stuff you may have been carrying around for a long time. Now is your opportunity.

- Hidden growths (polyps, cysts, tumors) that can change the functioning of organs, particularly those that eliminate through small openings (gallbladder, GI tract, etc).

Pay close attention to those things which operate on the principles of Uranus relating to invisible radiations and waves (radio waves, cell phones, etc). If you are starting to feel uneasy or ill around your microwave, listen to your body and stop using it. Machines get old, wear down and start leaking, even things like radiation.

Hopefully this will give you some food for thought and some ideas relating to some things you may've experienced and how you can change them.

OK well good to know. Major highs and lows have been a theme of my entire life. Part of my detoxification seems to be helping with lessening the intensity of these, although I still have them. I always feel amazing when I can get out and enjoy the beauty of nature however brief it is, the hard part is not letting myself get disappointed when it's over and desiring to be able to capture and stay in the moment, which I know is impossible, but its something that's always been a source of my depression, being disappointed at how fleeting some of the beautiful moments are so that I can't even fully enjoy them knowing they will be over soon. I am working so hard on being present in every moment, currently reading "the Power of Now" it is helping a lot.

Yes, thanks Kannon, and ditto about the detoxification. Though it's very intense for me, as this square hits most of my chart. Most notably, the Pluto-Uranus square will be exactly conjunct my sun-Jupiter square in March.

A rough ride, but worth it.

Uranus now creates a Kite with my Minor Triangle made of

Mercury 11 Libra
Moon 14 Leo
NN 14 Sag

Mercury rules 5th and 8th.

So the T-square with my Mercury is linked to this Kite.

Uranus approaches 3rd cusp.

Take the changes in thinking and communication that Pluto must be triggering as it has squared your Mercury and let that prepare you for the adjustments in habits, possibly domestic life that its quincunx (150-degree) to your Moon will bring. This might include dealing with some type of personal loss, particularly since the Nodes are aligned by semi-sextile/quincunx.

This signals a detour in life direction. Not a right turn, but maybe veering off the main road you've been on, or at least diverting for a while to take care of some more personal business.

Spot on! Thank you, Kannon! This is something planned for a long time, and now it's the time for it. In fact, I have something more interesting for you. The square you're mentioning is making a 12th star in my chart, the two planets are the only missing legs for this star.

The star includes two very important asteroids for my chart: Lilith 14 Aqua in the 1st house, opposite my Moon (0) and Aphrodite 13 Virgo. This Aphrodite is important because my chart is a Fan built around a Yod and Aphrodite (my Venus/Sun midpoint, Venus 6 Virgo, Sun 20 Virgo) is the release point of this Yod, in the center of the Fan.

So the 12th Star is as follows:

tUranus - Aries
IC 16 Taurus
SN 14 Gem
Saturn (chart ruler) 16 Cancer
Moon 14 Leo
Aphrodite 13 Virgo
Mercury 11 Libra
MC 16 Scorpio
NN 14 Sag
tPluto 14 Cap
Lilith 14 Aqua
Jupiter/Juno 12 Pisces

Uranus for me is the second chart ruler (intercepted Aqua in 1st) and Pluto rules my MC, which for a Cap ASC is like a secondary chart ruler. In a way, all my chart rulers are met in this T/square forming a Cardinal Cross with my Mercury, with multiple meanings for me (apart from ruling 5th and 8th, I am also a Virgo Sun)

So I was thinking this is a nice example for you as to how this transiting square can "complete" a chart and possible triggering a major life stage.

I was deeply affected by a reading I had recently regarding a relationship and checked transits:

Could the reading and the ensuing mental turmoil have been triggered by these transits? What do you think these would be pushing me to do?

No doubt your reading took place during a window of opportunity for a transformation of your thinking to begin.

t.Uranus moving opp. natal Mercury often involves communication that is jarring, forcing us to think about things from an angle we'd been avoiding or that just did not line up with our preferences.

t.Pluto square natal Mercury is one of the main transits in which we can allow our thinking to be transformed. Old thinking often just does not work in a new environment with different people.

This is a window of opportunity to open your mind and start throwing out beliefs or assumptions that just don't serve you anymore.

For now, some more interesting historical illustrations of how Uranus & Pluto play when they get together in angular ways...

In 1931 the world was still reeling from the US stock market crash of late 1929. Uranus had moved into Aries, just as it has been recently. Pluto was in Cancer. 1931 was the year their square began.

Uranus squared Pluto following the financial crisis of 1929/30, just as it did following the financial crisis of 2008/09.

When US presidential elections were held 8 November 1932, Uranus 20 Aries squared Pluto 23 Cancer. This ushered in a renewal of the progressive era of the turn of the century and brought FDR to the White House in a huge landslide. Uranus, the 'collective individual' went at it with Pluto, significator of banking and power consolidation. During the 1934 mid-term elections, Uranus and Pluto were still square, allowing Democrats to pick up a super-majority in the US Senate and slide FDR's reforms through during following legislative sessions.

Previous to all this, the "roaring '20s" had been a period of wealth and excess, at least for some. It is this excess that the Uranus-Pluto cleanses away. Its dynamic disturbs wishful thinking and mindless actions of toxic optimism (gambler's fever). It challenges the structures (habits, rules) that allowed such patterns to become institutionalized.
