Just a thought -

Was wondering if the ascendant can tell you what motivates you to wake up, how you are when you are awake, etc.

Also wondering if the 12th house can tell you what type of sleep patterns you have, what helps you sleep, what your environment has to be like for you to go to sleep, etc.

Interesting concept. I'm not sure how to look at my own chart this way....other than my ASC is Scorpio and I can be a royal b*tch if woken up before I intend to. Like, I've yelled at the little girl across the street for bouncing a ball at 7 am type of b*tchy. Eek.

When I go to bed, I have to have dark and quiet..no TV or radio or computers on. Quiet is the most important. I also toss and turn a lot before getting comfortable and I need a lot of room to feel good when falling asleep...aka I like to sprawl all over the bed.

Not sure how that relates to my Libra 12th house, though....interested in hearing some others' opinions on this.

Usually, once I'm awake, I have to get up right away. Unless I'm depressed, and/or feeling ill, as I have been. I got up, showered, and ended up half asleep on the couch until close to 4pm, when I got up and took SAM-e, then made tea. I need to get back to taking l-glutamine. I prefer a shower as soon as I get up.

I prefer to have a shower before bed, when I'm awake enough to have tea, and putter around doing things, or watch a TV show (tonight: The Americans). I like light from the tv, and a fan running. I should fall asleep to a subliminal, but I haven't been.

Thanks so much for the responses!

Actually - I have a leo ascendant with Saturn in Virgo conjuncting it. I use to be a morning person. For the most part - I am pretty happy when I wake up. I think about the things I need to do for the day. So many things go through my mind when I wake up.

My 12th house cusp is Cancer and I have a retrograde mars in leo there. I need quiet and no light to fall asleep. I tend to toss and turn. I also tend to get overheated. I don't remember much of my dreams, at all. I don't take up the whole bed. Also, I have a hard time falling asleep in any other bed but my own and in any other home, but my own.

I'm both a night and morning person, depending on my mood. I can only handle being up late, if I feel okay. I have twinkle lights around the fireplace, and in the warm weather, go for walks late at night, or sit outside (we have no streetlights).

I definitely wake up as my Taurus Asc. I need to have time to get ready make coffee, shower, gather anything that needs to come with me to work, I like to take my time on my make-up. I set five alarms every night if I'm working, and hope that I don't snooze, because I'm super grumpy pants if I can't go my own speed in the AM.

My 12th house is Aries. I find that it takes me forever to fall asleep, my mind is running and my body isn't always tired enough. It's almost like I'm fighting sleep.

I'm a Scorpio Ascendant too.
I am a beast when I'm woken up at a time that I haven't chosen. I will disrespect everyone lol I dont care. When I'm sleeping, that's my time. No interrupty!!!!!!! lol

I have Pluto in 12th house, it's in scorpio. I can't go to sleep before 11:30pm. Otherwise I'll wake up before 3am. So, I'm a night owl. However, I find it difficult to wake up in the morning. Anything before 7:30am is HELL. I'm probably most productive in the afternoon. Cannot do mornings. Ask me to do you a favour before noon and I'll give you a very dry response lol.

This is a cool idea, something I'll have to look at in all the charts I'm collecting

I'm a Pisces Asc. and I like to lie in bed after I've woken up and just kind of think about my dreams, sometimes I want to fall back into them, but never do. I have a hard time waking up in the morning, am not a morning person, am slow and out of it at first, but after I've had my coffee, the morning can be my most creative, productive time.

Sag Asc.

I take pride in getting up late and sleeping late. I only get up early if I really have to and that can range from 4 am - 8am depending on my work. Things have changed because of baby which is also very unpredictable but that is definitely to my advantage.

This actually makes alot of sense but I've never really thought about it before. I have a virgo ascendant and leo in the 12th house, with my chiron also in the 12th house but chiron is in virgo.

With Leo ruling the 12th, i think it "illuminates" the nighttime for me. I'm usually awake til 1 or 2 in the morning. Definitely a night owl. Also, when i was a kid i always needed a nightlight to feel safe and when i was in my teens i always kept the tv on all night (with the sound off) bc i still needed some kind of light on near me to fall asleep. I've just recently gotten out of this habbit at 21 years old and can now sleep through the night in complete darkness, although i'll still often leave my laptop or tv on to light up the room while i'm first laying down then let it them turn off by themselves after a certain amount of time so the whole room is dark. Also I tend to remember most of my dreams and they usually always have some meaning for me to decipher from them that has something to do with my life. I've also had some experiences with lucid dreaming and astral travels at nighttime in my sleep.

As for my Virgo Ascendant and waking up in the morning, I find that whenever I wake up I'm up, I rarely fall back asleep once I've woken up the first time unless I wake up at really odd/early hour. When i first wake up for about an hour or two I like to just be alone with my thoughts which is a very Virgo thing. Heaven have mercy on whoever interrupts my morning thought process before i'm done thinking! Nothing makes me more irritated than being bombarded with random things I need to do in the morning by other people. I always need some "me" time to just think and get my thoughts organized, and sometimes even meditate when I first wake up. Then the next thing I tend to do is make a list of things I need to do that day or that week, also a very Virgo thing!

Taurus ASC here. I can relate somewhat(: Sometimes the hardest part is the shower... "must get out... ahhh, so comfortable..."

Interesting. My SO has an Aries ascendant and he is definitely a morning person. He is not afraid of the snooze button but once he gets up he hits the ground running. Shower - dressed - breakfast - out the door like a machine. A bit frantic in his pace if he feels disorganized. At the end of the day when he is tired, he CRASHES. I mean we could be in the middle of an action thriller and he is KO'd on the couch at 9:00pm. Once he is out there is no bringing him back, lol, and it doesn't matter what is going on around him.

Me on the other hand am a Virgo ascendant and I'm nearly the opposite. In the morning I will wake up at the last possible second and go through my routine no matter how long it takes. I'm very methodical and meticulous particularly with my makeup application and this has made me a little late to work a couple times! Oops. Let's just say rushing is not my strong suit. As far as going to bed I can force myself to stay up as long as I need to. I will go to bed if someone else does but otherwise I just go when I want to. I also ALWAYS go through my bedtime routine no matter how tired I am (never go to bed with an unwashed face!). I do have a huge issue with noise though. It has to be quiet or there has to be some white noise drowning out whatever is in the background. I can deal with a little light.

It takes me quite a lot of time to fall a sleep, normally it's always an hour before i can manage it, though if anything is on my mind or i have something important the next day it will take me hours. I need absolute darkness but white noise doesn't bother me. I also avoid going to bed a lot of times.

If I've gone to bed early ill usually wake up half an hour or more before the alarm clock, look at it, fall back asleep, repeat this a couple of times until like 20-30 minuts after the alarm clock rings, fantasize about not going anywhere that day and then finally get up. Once im up, im up.

i am a pisces ascendant, with a heavy 12th house aquarius.

I am a Virgo Asc and I wake up with the intent of analyzing the **** out of the day

I can't fall asleep if I am nervous or upset. If I am, I watch movies-usually until sunrise.

I need it DARK in room and I need A LOT of legroom. I have issues sleeping next to other people unless they are still and quiet.

My bedroom is my "safe house" and usually very tranquil. Lots of plants, candles and books. I need it clean and tidy and I always sleep with windows open no matter the temperature.

I panic if I wake up too late!!! The day will pretty much be ruined. 8AM is pushing it 90 minutes to far..

Thanks everyone. Charlie, no wonder I know so many movies - seems I watch, at least one, before I sleep. I think it's to give the skeptic that has been accepted into my life, a forceful break :-) .

LOL rushing when I get up is not my strong suit either. I can do without most things but not , my reflection and restructure time. MINE :-) Believe me, I have tried rushing and in most of those cases it became something out of a comedy. I make em laugh but I end up with a band-aid.

A few Scorpio ascendants on here, and I agree with all of them! (Scorpio ascendant with Scorpio on the 12th as well) I used to fiercely yell at my mother when she tried to wake me up in the morning as a child. Then I got an alarm clock and set it to the time *I* wanted to wake up, and I was always fine after that. Quiet and darkness are important. Definite night owl - hard to make myself go to sleep before midnight. It's usually 1am-3am these days. And it takes awhile for my brain to really wake up after I get up in the morning. I can easily keep sleeping into the afternoon if left to my own devices.

Funny, as opposed to the Taurus ascendant who posted, I always rush in the morning and *never* leave enough time to get food, do makeup or anything. I'm lucky if I have enough time to get dressed and out the door when I'm supposed to. Food and makeup are done on the train to wherever I'n going, lol.

I was thinking moon/mercury but it could just be me since mine are VERY active.
Gemini moon and Virgo mercury (mercury in 12th).

I like music when going to sleep but it doesn't need to be relaxing music or low volume. Any will do. I need my imagination to be free to basically dream while awake. Very vivid imagination!

When I wake up, I don't want ANYONE talking to me... at all.
I want zero stimulation until I've gathered myself. My mom drove me crazy when I was young because she just never stopped in the morning. Blah, blah, blah, blah...

"Mom! I need some downtime over here for a bit!!"

Gemini ASC and Mercury Taurus in the 12th house.
~MORNINGS~
I am not a morning person. When I have work or class in the morning I set my alarm for 6, but usually snooze til 6:45.

I avoid showering if I have to be somewhere in the morning. Cause if I do, I am showing up w/ wet hair and no make up on, on time. Or I am showing up late.

There have been times where I tell myself I am going to shower before work or class but then I run out of time.

I need about a half hour to sit and just drink my coffee. If I don't have time to do that. I better have a redbull. So that way I can get ready and get caffeinated at the same time. I try to keep a stash of redbulls on hand and save them for those mornings I oversleep.

I can get along with you just fine, as long as you don't intagate me before I've even had my coffee.
My mom drives me nuts in the morning. I'll be going for my first cup of coffee..."So what are you doing today? By the way you need to do this, Oh Stawr, your hair!! You need a shower"
Geez can I have my coffee fist, or course I'm going to take a shower captain obvious!
As Jenna Marbles says "I have so much to do in the shower, I need to have a cup of coffee first."

If I really need a shower and don't have time, I will be cranky.

Waking up with out having to be anywhere early I often wake up around 8:30ish.

~NIGHT~
I am more of a night person now that I work in the evenings and only have morning classes twice a week.

I think I went to bed around 11 last night.

I notice that when I let my blood sugar go up and down I can get so drained.
For example yesterday I had one packet of oatmeal for lunch before I go on an observation for class. It wore off a few hours later and I was starting to feel dizzy. After the observation I got Chinese food with my sister. I was in such a food coma from that meal. I got home at 8, laid on the couch for a couple hours and could barely keep my eyes open. Could of gone to bed then and there sometimes I'll fall asleep on the couch for about an hour.
Lately I don't fall asleep right away and will do unspeakable things to fall asleep.

I move around a lot in my sleep and my bed looks destroyed the next day. I'll wake up and one of my bed sheets will be on the floor.

I never thought of this idea, interesting.

I have Leo rising with the Sun in H1. I was born at 5:00 am and am a morning person. I'd like to get up early and don't like sleeping late. I do now though because I often stay up very late.

I like to ease into this dimension and the world after night and being out of body. I meditate every morning. I like quiet. No turning on the tv or hearing news, no phone calls. Don't like hearing the phone ring or knocks on my door early in the morning! I've gotten into the habit of repeating sacred names when I wake up and before going to sleep. I attribute these quirks to an active 12H.

Hey, I have this theory, too. I wrote this blog article about it, if you're interested. How I think the Rising sign and rising planets can define your morning routine:
http://astroarena12.blogspot.com/2014/12/start-your-day-with-your-rising.html

Anyways, I have Capricorn Rising and I tend to wake up at almost the exact same time every day and I never even set an alarm. I often can tell myself to wake up at a certain time and I end up doing just that! As soon as I'm up, I'm up and can't really go back to sleep. And then I start thinking about all of the things I need to do. There is always something really structured about my mornings. I feel the best when I get a lot of things done in the morning. I also don't feel as energized sleeping past the single digits. Waking up at 10 almost ruins my morning. I'm generally functional in the morning and easy to deal with, as long as my plans aren't being messed up.

Now, I never thought about the 12th House influencing our bedtime/late night ways. But, it makes total sense!

At night, just about anything goes for me. Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune are in my 12th. I think Saturn tries to lay down some structure. I'm always thinking about what I have to do the next day and planning it in my head (which is probably why I fall into such a disciplined rhythm in the morning). I often say to myself, "I should go to sleep at so-and-so time." But, Uranus rebels against any structure at night. I can never keep a nightly routine. I can go for a little while, quietly having tea and reading before getting to bed at 10:30. Then, I can get in the habit of staying up, dancing to music by myself in my room, at 1 in the morning! So, late night is always unpredictable for me. Neptune's influence, I think, is that I love listening to music before I go to bed. Movies and shows are somehow the best when watched at midnight. And I also think it's responsible for my super-deep sleep (also sextiles my Scorpio Moon). It's like a coma, most of the time, though not nearly as heavy as when I was a kid/teenager. But, still, the only things that wake me up, besides my own body, are alarm clocks and persistent shaking/yelling.

My dog motivates me to wake up - because he literally won't let me sleep in haha
And reading helps me relax and sleep at night (12th in Taurus/Gemini with Chiron in Gemini). But I've never found it easy to fall asleep because I'm too alert and mentally hyper (Aries Sun/Gem AC/Merc-Uranus square).
