How would you compare the characteristics between the signs in western/chinese?? Aries vs Dragon Rat vs Sag Pig vs Scorpio etc etc I am: Hour-Dragon (Aries) Day-Rat (Sag) Month-Goat/Sheep (Cancer) Year-Dragon (Aries) I easily "out-Aries" my SO who is an Aries Sun, Mercury 1H!! In Chinese he is: Hour-Aquarius Day-Aquarius Month-Aries Year-Scorpio He is much more Uranian than I am and I have a stellium in 11H natal trine Uranus so the Chinese version must play a bigger role than everybody thinks? I find it sort of weird to "match" chinese astrology to western one. Or to understand chinese astrology on western astro basis. The 1st issue is that the element of wood is often ignored. Personally I do not see much similarity between dragon and aries. From what I know, Dragon is ruled by earth. Its time is mid-spring, when plants cover the earth and resources are plentiful. It means something vast. It expanses. Represents ancient wisdom. In this way it's somewhat similar to jupiter energy. Rat is ruled by water. Its time is mid winter. Cunning, strategic, observational, resilient. I don't find much similarity between Rat and Sag either. Although I suppose there's a sort of flexibility which the two both share. And Rat (along with Horse) is said to have that "jack of all trade" thing going on - another similarity. Pig is ruled by water (Yin). Its time is after the harvest - beginning of winter. Resourceful, steady and generous. IP: Logged |

Chinese lunar sign sequence does NOT coincide with when the Sun changes from one western zign to another. Dragon is only half of a western sign. Why not go read about Chinese astrology so you can start with some facts? After all it has been in use for a VERY long time. The 5 or 6 MARCH would end Tiger and beging Rabbit. The Chinese(lunar) animal sign changes roughly at about 15 degrees of western sign. Other then that you are comparing kiwi to rutebagas. There 12 year sequence is not based on the sun moving through 12 constellations. It is based on the cycle of Jupiter. Must be a dozen threads on this site where posters are doing what you are doing, but it does not work that way. Chinese fable and corresponding philosophy refer to 28 constellations. ------------------ -- IP: Logged |

I agree with 12Muddy and Seimei! The Western-Chinese equivalents are not very well thought out, and they don't completely match. RAS had some threads on this topic. Here is one - http://www.linda-goodman.com/ubb/Forum24/HTML/208868.html I'm pretty sure there was another one where she listed the signs with what she thought would be the best equivalents... but I can't seem to find it atm. For instance, the Chinese Tiger is kind of like a combination of Aquarius, Aries, Leo... It's not -straight out- Aquarius energy. The Tiger sign has a lot of fiery passion and also aggression that is not characteristic of Aquarius... but it's true that Tigers are often interested in humanitarian and environmental causes, and they do have a very "intellectual" side to their personality. Intellectual connections are more important to them than emotional or sexual ones (this is unlike Leo and Aries). However, the legendary Tiger anger and desire for revenge when wronged - is pretty Martian, maybe even Plutonian. IP: Logged |

^^ I see that for the Dragon... I'd add Scorpio to the mix...To me the Dragon is the way you would imagine a Sagittarius with Scorpio Moon and Libra ASC... and... hmmm... probably Leo Mars.... with some Pluto aspects going on: Moon/Pluto or Mars/Pluto. :edit: The Tiger could be Aquarius Sun and Mercury, Aries or Gemini Moon (not very heavy emotionally), Leo ASC - with Mars in Aries or Scorpio.
