I don't view houses with any of the negative connotations that have been brought up here, and given the nature of my specialty I've had to become far more adept with them than the average professional astrologer. angel4845, No is the answer to your question up top. Houses are slices representing areas of our lives, which may have more or less emphasis according to our gifts and purposes associated with our chosen spiritual development -- not particular character flaws or bad behaviors. These things are no more associated with the 8th than the 12th or any other house.
There are no 'good' houses and no 'bad' houses. None of them represent predominantly negative qualities associated with the natural ruler(s), as in Pluto/8th.
Houses can also be seen as process of development.
What are the positive qualities you can name associated with Pluto/8th?
Others have also offered up inaccurate portrayals of the 8th house along the same lines from places of personal bias (douchebag, crazy, etc).
To go through the houses ...
1st = "I" - Self/body/personality in the subjective sense. Self identity. Your orientation to life on earth. First house of life.
2nd = "Mine" - the first house of materiality, resources I have access to, possessions, income, what I own. This is where the self gets grounded into relation to the material, particularly what it can grasp (infantile urge)
3rd = "Us" - the first house of relations, siblings, cousins, speech, communication, mobility, exchange of thoughts and ideas. Begins at toddler stage when we are no longer putting things in our mouths, but gaining mobility.
4th = "Home" - biological inheritance or early life setup, where you land with your karma. First house of endings where relation to parents/roots takes hold. Family, loss of parents. Geographic orientation.
5th = "Play" - creativity, love given, romance, children, the fun stuff that is a natural expression of a vital person. Kicks in especially during teen years. Second house of life where passions set in.
6th = 2nd house of materiality, a conscious relation to the body, pets, vocation, habits, natural health, etc.
7th = "Them" - the other we choose or partner with. Others generally, who are not our relations. Second house of relations.
8th = Others' resources. Merging. The place where we share space/energy/currency. Second house of endings where inheritances related to partners show up.
9th = The world 'out there'. The larger world and its ideas, religion, higher education, philosophies, travel, etc. Final house of life where ideals get enacted broadly.
10th = Final house of materiality. Life aims, highest you can achieve, the potential that roots in your body, but is heavily influenced by your early life setup (4th). The rewards you reap.
11th = Final house of relations and largest platform of relations, groups, friends of common cause. Group interests which are the audience that captures whatever performance/creation you have to give.
12th = Final house of endings and the subconscious relation to one's own psyche and the consequences of what it has produced. Mental health or creativity (vs 6th's physical/vocation).
Because of the implications of 'merging' associated with the 8th house, there are spiritual dimensions of that, often associated with things considered 'occult' in which persons may choose to reach over to the larger body of resources from the 'other side' rather than material ones (capital). While there is plenty of room for misunderstandings surrounding such pursuits in both these dimensions, that does not make the 8th house the place where all "manipulation, hiding, & lying" can be found. That too easily becomes a formula for gross misjudgments of someone.
