Sadly, others' integrity cannot be garunteed. It would be nice if everyone had respect for the posts personal in nature. And, if we're concerned about quoting from an argument standpoint, as Randall mentioned, I doubt that such a function will be implemented.

My logical self realizes this to be true. I am, in fact human, and all humans make mistakes, but still my Virgo placements would really, really rather people not see such blatant ones.

1. Reflection is not an instant process, and it is healthy to be able to consider what you have said and return to it. This is good communication and promotes learning. If we cannot edit what we have said, then it will mean pages and pages of additional posts that will possibly get lost in all the other posts made since then.

2. Personal readings. Many, including myself, who start free reading threads, keep a running tally of who has requested and who has been read for, to keep the thread on track. I have already seen a few threads that cannot function as well without the edit option.

3. Discussions about private information. Sometimes we wish to answer a question with private information so that it is received by those on the thread, but not left on the internet indefinitely. Without the edit function discussion is limited only to information you are happy to leave on the internet to the end of time. This limits discussion on many subjects in many forums.

Randall has said this is temporary, I certainly hope so for the reasons above.
