I find the Ascendant so confusing. Is it really a part of your personality or just a mask you put on when you are not close to someone?

Ime i have seen people`s ascendants fade away when they get more comfortable and closer to a person. Their moon especially starts showing more and eventually takes over their personality.

Ive realised that when it comes to other people's asc, I often can't guess them but once I learn of them, it is so correct and obvious that I wonder if I've discarded it as a possibility because it is so in sight. I now think of it as a uniform which is both at once very noticeable but equally invisible, taken for granted. I think the mask is so melded with the identity that it often can't be prised from that. It does its job pretty well.

Ref my own asc it doesn't feel so much a part of me from inside but others reactions affirm to me it does what i intend it to, more than I'd think generally.

Once the context shifts, once someone is known as more than a uniform I think it does become increasingly apparent to be an outer mask than core identity.

One other thing .. I read that people often retreat into their ascendant when scared and I think this is true.

It is not merely a 'mask.' It is the primary modus operandi for how you face the world and relate to it day-to-day.

Saying it is a 'mask' puts the in-the-know person in the position of disregarding it or possibly using it for the presumption of the person's deception about their real identity. It is part of their human identity.

Sun = cosmic male principle.
Moon = ... female ...
Asc = how those two are sewn together into bodily form.

I not witnessed this. In my grandfather's case I witnessed the opposite. He was very Moon-in-Libra with those outside the family and more Scorpio rising and Cancer Sun at home with family. He'd communicate and back-slap with them, but not with blood relations.

In my father's case as well. He's more Sun in Libra at work and with public, but definitely more Saturn/Cancer Asc and Moon in Virgo at home.

My mother as well. Definitely more Moon in Libra with those outside family and Aries rising at home.

It is all in the balance of the energies of the person's chart. For some the rising sign is the primary sign (the correct one, not necessarily the one that shows on the chart you have for the). For others like me who have 4+ planets in their Sun Sign, that will tend to be more dominant (unless maybe there's a conjunction or 1st house planet or cluster there that reinforces the Asc sign).

And it is all a matter of what you're attuned to and perceive.

To put it simply think of the Ascendant as your behavior, not your personality.

Let's be sure we are clear on the words we are using.

Rising sign refers to the sign over the Ascendant point, regardless of degree, and is a 30-degree wide general field of expression.

Ascendant (mundane) is the meeting place of the eastern horizon and ecliptic. In the birth chart it is also the 'zero point' where the final house of endings (12th) has ended and the first house of life begins.

The Ascendant is the cusp of the 1st house, which relates to head/body and identity in the subjective sense.

So Ascendant cannot be reduced to single keywords, but holds a specific horoscopic definition that may not align with sign-based expectations. If it is aligned closely with a planet or planets, those can strongly color the Asc, regardless of the sign there.

You can correctly say Sun is Ascendant in a chart that has Cancer over the Ascendant conjuct or parallel the Sun. Same is true with any other planet.

Think of Sun sign as 'we who exude this range of values/aspirations' ...

Moon sign as 'we who hold this range of feelings' ...

Rising sign as 'we who do it this way'...

Ascendant as 'my way.'

Exactly speaking, the Ascendant is the flesh & blood person.

To simplify things Ascendant and Rising Sign are used interchangeably.

No, that is corrupted usage, even if it is common. As Nine mentioned, it is for simplification, but it clouds things. Reductionism often does that.

Look at any birth chart and you will see that the Ascendant (AC or Asc) is a specific point, which can have aspects to specific planets. It is the point on the ecliptic (Sun's path) that joins the eastern horizon.

Rising means aligned with the undersky (IC/4th cusp) or past it, moving upwards towards the MC (from a geocentric perspective). Once a sign passes over the Midheaven it is descending.

All signs on the Eastern side of a chart are rising (from IC/4th cusp, over Asc, up to MC/10th). So to be correct as to what is actually happening in the sky we all have 6 signs rising, 6 descending.

Only in sign-based astrological survey is "Ascendant" assumed to refer to the sign over it rather than the point itself. So we say 'the' rising sign to specify it.

So in my breakdown above, Ascendant as 'my way' refers to the birth chart's particular Asc degree with the aspects it makes to planets.

The Ascendant, Is, the sign rising above the horizon where the eclpitic is. The eclpitic is the plane of planets and sun moon.

You asked for the meaning though, not what creates it.

The meaning of the Asc is, for the most part, it's just the energy combining with Aries. So it is your face/mask. However of course it's the most important piece of information because it reveals all houses.

It took me a long while to understand it tbh. Especially when people ask things like "But why dont i feel like my Asc?" As if one is supposed to "feel" it.

I would think the "feeling" of it would be if its the same sign as the energies one already has in the chart.

But if the energy of the sign is not familiar, one cant expect to "feel" it.

I for one have always assumed Sag was my Asc because of 4 planets in that sign being so strong.

But if one takes it as a sensitive angle/point that can be coloured by planets reacting to it, then it starts to make sense imo.

So from this understanding one can infer that Mercury on there(even when Scorpio is Ascending) will make someone more communicative or intellectually inclined.

That a Cancer Asc with Mars reacting with it, will make the Asc Cancer person more independent.

And even a Aries Asc with Moon reacting to it, will make the Aries more emotional, defensive and cautious.

But does it have to be exclusively a conjunction? I think not. Squares,oppositions,parallels/contra -parallels would be influential to the Asc too.

i said I don't feel like my asc but it's because I can't really articulate the nature of how I do identify with it.

I will try again ..

I'm Scorpio asc and how I do identify with it is that I'm quite reserved, prefer to be in the background, am attracted to dark themes and I revel in secrets.

However, I don't identify with it that I don't think I've got those core traits, they are not of substance to me. In fact I find them even more enjoyable because they are partly alien to me, not integrated.

I can't imagine others perceiving me as the brooding, powerful, sexual Scorpio asc (and they likely don't as I've Uranus conjunct the asc and opposite sun)

However, because it does feel separate to me, it's a place I can consciously enter and enjoy. Not something I feel as a burdensome thing I was born with. It's a bit what I would wish to be like, and i discover that I do happen to have some of these traits even though I will never fully own them. Then, as I've got older, the dressing up clothes are a little faded, not as glamorous as they once were. Much more a garment than a fundamental imagination vehicle. But still, I'm fond of.

Ok, none of that is probably useful and I still can't articulate it. I really want to nail down that sensation of the asc being unintegrated and yet very much felt deep. Like the wind sort of. Or feeling at home in a country I wasn't born in.

@Florence.

I think the point I am making here is that when a planet conjuncts the Asc, that planet colours the expression of the Asc so that planet(depending on the closeness of the orb) becomes the sensitive point.

So you will not take on all the traits of the typical Scorpio Asc. Uranus will add quirks that would otherwise not be there i.e an intellectually detached approach and an attraction towards the unusual.

Both Scorpio and Uranus do have a meeting point of-course. And that is both dislike (passionately) anything too mainstream and/or cliche. They can both be avant garde

@SleepyDiary: I don't think your ascendant is just your mask. It's more than that.

***FYI the info below is an excerpt from an upcoming blog post. ********

I view the ascendant as a game show host with life being the game. Bright sparkly (or not lolz) game show host personality that steps out onto the world with a unique set of goals and experiences.

The ascendant as a game show host uses it's personality to make connections/socialize, ask guests questions, get information and knowledge, and complete the game's (aka life) goal.

The ascendant sign perhaps is the type of game, a particular person is interested in or wants to play in. Planets on the ascendant modifies the game (life).

The ascendant as a game show host can also be seen as a tour guide. A spiritual tour guide, your soul/spirit road map, etc. Yes the ascendant plays a role and sometimes wears a "mask." But the ascendant game show host is there to guide you, keep you on track, and make sure you complete your purpose.

A perfect example is what happens when the ascendant game show host gets home after a long day's work. They settle in, remove their uniform, but they go to bed knowing that they learned something new that day, experienced something different, and that tomorrow they can do it again.

The ascendant game show host is like a job too. Some of us have to wear uniforms to work, some of us don't. Regardless of our uniforms (aka masks), we are not hiding (most of the time anyway). I would say that yes sometimes ascendant may appear and feel like a mask. But it depends on the juxtaposition and different nuances in your natal chart. My chart is nuanced to me for a lot of reasons, but the most basic and nuanced reason is I'm a Plutonian/Saturnian mix with Leo Rising and Jupiter on this rising. Leo is bright, fun, and optimistic, my Plutonian/Saturnian mix is dark, serious, and semi-realistic, so at times I feel like I am not being true to myself, and performing.

Regardless our ascendant is our responsibility to our natal charts and to our soul's purpose. My ascendant is like my spirit guide aka game show host. It moves me and allows me to experience the world, my world with lenses/shades that I don’t get to wear every day or all the time. It another way that makes me not only feel unique but also connected. Connected to myself, the world around me, and my chart.

I agree with this.
I have an aries rising. I've noticed that I can come across as forceful, overzealous, and honestly self-centered when I undertake something, say something (having a 1st house merc also has to do with that)...doesn't matter - and others have told me to 'calm down', at times. But I feel as though my water placements (venus and mars) have a bigger influence on my personality. The Aries rising fire is - more often than not - the best way for me to interact with the world. It's like, if it's not somewhat forceful, it's not genuine.

Some astrologers have described the rising sign as being like a lens through which you view the world, and I agree with this more than with 'mask' and what that implies.

A lens is clear/transparent, at least if you are born with that particular lens it will seem that way. You could imagine that each zodiacal sign is tinted a certain way to trigger its mode of expression in a given person's outlook. You'll still have this lens even if you've got Sun/planets in another sign (say 4+) and that other sign's expression or manner is more evident.

@Kannon
the work mask has never made any sense to me. however, I struggle with the ASC concept as a way to integrate the femenine and masculine energies of moon-sun. I read that first time in the book of Liz greene & Saportas "the luminaries" (probably I should read it again), but taking into practical terms is the part i have problem with (rising sign Taurus..lol and the need for practical use)

my rising sign is taurus and it is widely sextile cancer venus(4 degrees). i am very venusian as my venus conjunct my sun-mars. so far so good, but when the integration of my moon in gemini energy with the cancerian sun energy with the Taurus ascendant, i get very confused.

would you care to elaborate on this idea. I appreciate the contribution you have made to this thread.

thanks in advance!

The Ascendant is the person having the experience.

Sign on the Asc / Rising Sign is, as said above, your behavior. Aries, you're direct. Pisces, reclusive.

Aspects to Ascendant, people and circumstances you will attract and interact with most.

thank you aries23 i don't like cliché and am avant-garde in some ways - hopefully not for the sake of it, as i equally dislike that but definitely question the whys and wherefores of anything conventional or automatic.

i wasn't countering your point in any way, just in case it appeared to be the case, coming after yours - the discussion got interesting and i wanted to have another go at understanding it.

I'm glad to get an aries23 reading for free ive never figured out how to meld interpretations of scorp and Uranus so its remained a bit of a blind spot for me.

Maybe it also comes through in your style of dress? You wear clothes to allow maximum freedom of movement(Uranus)?Or you have a largely androgynous look?

Uranus does not like boxes. So i would imagine something on those lines in the way you present yourself?Something that incorporates a certain shock value also?
