Somewhat random question, but why isn't Pluto exalted in Capricorn? It makes no sense to me that Pluto is exalted in Aries when it's such a deep, powerful planet. I see so many similarities between Scorpios and Capricorns, including the love of sex! I just dont get it. When I look at a Capricorn I see raw power in their eyes. Aries, all childlike fire.

Pluto is exalted in Aries? I thought Sun was Aries exaltation.

I read Pluto exalted in Leo. I don't know about that but that's what I read in an old book "The Astrologer's Handbook" by Louis S Acker and Frances Sakoian. Published '89 by Harper and Row.

This book also claims Neptune's exaltation is in Cancer.

Western astrologers have not yet worked this out for the outer three planets to the point of text book certainty, no matter what some may say. And these things aren't determined by the appearances or personal characteristics of people with particular (sun) signs.

Pluto vibrates to saturated red according to the late astrologer and career engineer John Willner. So based on that its association with Aries is understandable given its association with Mars, which vibrates red. However, that does not mean Pluto should be considered exalted there. Don't conflate "rulership" (dignity position) with exaltation. Exaltation is a planet's point (sign) of greatest strength.

It is my own perception that within the tropical system, Virgo is a good candidate for Pluto's exaltation. I suggest that the degree area for its greatest strength or point of exaltation is in early Virgo, 3-4°. That is the area where Pluto was when the first birth control pill was made publicly available for sale (in the U.S.). This is an important marker, because Pluto's theme of regeneration and the reproductive system nestles in with Virgo's feminine themes of virgin and mother. Pluto's depth focus intellectually also fits with the conscious practical Mercurial scrutiny of Virgo.

In considering this I looked up a random astrologer's opinion who is also informed by traditional astrological reasoning. I found astrologer Dima Gur of Israel agrees that Pluto is exalted in Virgo, but expresses it in his own reasoning informed by traditional astrology.

I also agree with his choice for the exaltation of Neptune. Take some time to read his article. It's good.

Whoops. The stuff I was reading was about Aries. This was a while ago. Either way, I don't see it being exalted in Leo either or any fire sign for that matter. *shrugs* I don't get the study behind it. My choice would be Capricorn. Then possibly Cancer since its the sign of the mother = transformation, birth, etc.

Pluto rules sex, death and rebirth, I dont know, is odd for it to be exalted in virgo but scorpio and virgo use to be one sign perhaps there is something to it. I read scorpio and virgo play out that heaven and hell dichotomy. Scorpios is motivated by transformation and virgo is also as they are motivated by "self improvement." Their symbols are similar but different showing how virgo's process is more internal perhaps it is exalted in pluto LOL.

Great discussion. Thanks Kannon! I am digging your Pluto is exalted in Virgo theory!

Quoting the Link Kannon shared with us:

" Last but not least comes our venerable grim reaper Pluto. I'm pretty sure that Virgo of all signs is Pluto's sign of exaltation.
In November Mother Nature is dying in front of our eyes as Persephone is descending into Pluto's domain. Wait stop! Rewind…
A little bit earlier in September we experience that first feeling of blues as the days are getting shorter and summer is crumbling down slowly, layer by layer. Pluto, of course, is the lord of change.
Scorpios 'sting' others while Virgo criticize or 'sting' themselves (look at the glyph). They are both analytical and morbidly realistic. Both are unwillingly attracted to taboo subjects (sex, drugs) and more importantly both Virgo and Scorpio have strong compulsion-obsession issues. Scorpio likes to be in control, Virgo relishes losing control. In the world of BDSM Scorpios are masters while Virgos are slaves, metaphorically speaking.
In a strange kind of way Virgo tends to act like Pluto's yin version. Both Virgo and Scorpio are yin (negative signs) but nevertheless in mars ruled Scorpio Pluto's influence is more virile.
Last but not least both Virgo and Scorpio are symbols of medicine, whether surgery or the healing art Pluto needs to experience pain in order to heal.
Traditionally Virgo exalts Pluto because it finds more esoteric and efficient ways to knowledge instead of the date comparing, data collecting ways more familiar to Mercury. Practical knowledge, magic and knowledge through intense personal experience are all in the Pluto domain. The glyphs of Mercury and Pluto bear a resemblance as well."
