at least i've never come across that idea in any of the vedic stuff i've read or heard, and i've never met a vedic astrologer who ranks the sun as the most important part of a chart and you'd think a person's soul would be

What is the difference between soul and self? I feel like who you are (self) is shaped a lot by your soul so it’s essentially the same thing right?

The ego is part of the mind which is part of self.

Self is mind, will, & emotions.

The human spirit is bound to the soul at conception and represents life in the flesh.

The human spirit contains a conscience, communion channel, & an external wisdom channel.

The whole chart being the soul makes more sense to me. But I always hear people say it’s the moon sign.

I'd agree with that, since emotions are the gateway to the soul. The Moon is also how we express ourselves around people we are most comfortable with and when we let the 'real' us out..

But I don’t think everyone completely relates to their moon. Me for instance I don’t feel like an average Aquarius moon I read in descriptions. People close to me wouldn’t describe me as Aquarian like either.

My mom is another example. She’s a Virgo moon amd I barely see her as a Virgo moon. She seems so much more like a Scorpio moon or something. Her emotional nature is almost nothing like a Virgo.
