Love them but the traditional library will partially sadly/partially gladly become obsolete. IP: Logged |

I dont think they're obsolete, at all. I dunno what the average librarian is up to, but I know that you work at the consortium, which, if I understood you correctly, is not so much a library, as it is the hub of a number of libraries, branching off like spokes... er, "spoking off"?.. like spokes. locally, borders is my library-where-i-can't-checkout...one thing i have noticed is that even though i donated some to my locl library, they have none of david icke's stuff...wonder if that's because they think it's trash, or did someone put him on a no-no list like he implies?juni, are you a daytripper at the library too? Katatonic, the librarian must be part of the international conspiracy of librarians organised by blue moon aka the queen of england. That's why there is no david icke in your bookshop. Blame blue moon. IP: Logged |

oh the bookshop carries him, but not the library. sadly have to say that i used to expect more broadness than my locals show, which is why i spend as much time at the store - they let you sit and read all day if you want, and sometimes my work involves a lot of waiting time! but i don't give up on libraries. i would love to see the inside of the library of congress; though i am terrible at returning on time one of my fondest memories from school days was hours of browsing ending in a return home with an armful of books...IP: Logged |

As a general rule (exceptions surely exist), libraries do not have a "do not add" list (though I'm sure X-rated stuff wouldn't be, though I've heard of a library that carried Playboy...). I've donated books of all kinds, some fringe material, and they generally take them all, and I find other fringe books. (One of the funniest was a Loompanics book on how to hack computers in a library that was always having their computer systems hacked, mainly to surf the net for free from laptops outside )However, theft of books are a BIG problem, and fringe books are almost as preferred as books on how to do magic or vampire fiction for being stolen. Also, many who get the fringe books but return them tend to vandalize them, such as highlighting large parts of it and writing in notes and comments (some of them profane rants). This will cause such a book to be discarded. (Naturally, the book needs to be in good condition when it's donated to begin with.) Personally, I'd like to see a couple of big guys dressed in all black and driving a black car go rough up and/or interrogate these miscreants who vandalize or steal fringe books myself. IP: Logged |

It depends on the libary...When ever i'm in Toronto, my second home. I love the Libraries, there's free wireless internet, so I can just stop by plug in my laptop and go online without anyone bugging me. They also have eBooks thats only accesable while your there, it also has features of a traditional libary. Were as in Ottawa the libaries aren't as well funded, I can never find anything here. I like how in Toronto the Libary is a blend of a Traditional Libary and a modern one. So I know the Toronto Public Libary will never go obsolete. IP: Logged |

I love libraries and bookstores equally...but for different reasons.Libraries b/c I can borrow and bring them back without having to spend money (provided they're not overdue lol)...their resources I like...tax forms...free computer use, copy machine if I need one...can borrow videos and music Book stores...fun to roam around and see what's new. Portland has Powell's...awesome store(s)...each one is unique...especially City of Books on Burnside...their flagship store...it's huuuuuge multilevel and you can spend days there...they sell new and used books. Books are my first love....learned to read when I was four and read constantly. IP: Logged |

i used to love the libraries but i was an abusive user... no i have total respect for books though, but i was never good at returning books on time. ans of course, it was my favorite place to hide and skip classes... and i also want to OWN books, and only in case the book i wantd wasn't checked out for a reeeeeeally long time (really, like 10 years), i stole them... in the region i grew up in, not many people read books. and the books i could not find at libraries i ordered at bookshops but a lot of the times they were out of print!IP: Logged |
