Well, that's what the birdbrains, including O'Bomber, Pee-lousy, Reid and the rest of the intellectual underachievers say.

But, the truth is the earth has been cooling since 1999 and it's still cooling.

There are some interesting graphs on the AccuWeather site that are useful for deciding who is telling the truth...and who is not.

First, some stats. 1,044 daily record low temperatures have been broken this month nationwide according to NCDC -- count record "low highs" and the number increases to 2,925, surely to pass 3,000 before the end of the month. Some thoughts on the 'low highs" below.*

The period of July 17-20 was the worst, with over 1,600 stations breaking records. It's worth noting that these stats include all records across the nation. Of the record lows, through July 20th (thanks to William Schmitz @ SERCC, check out their Twitter Feed), this was the regional breakdown:

Next, a map of the Departure from Average temperatures so far in July (yes, we have one week left). Yes, that's a "-10.0" in Pennsylvania - double digit deficits over a month are rare indeed. Note that there are no positive numbers.

The lowest temperatures of the month are also impressive, with 50s in every state and 40s in most, some 30s. Normally temperatures are peaking in July.

And finally I'll repeat this map which shows the lack of 85-degree days in the Northeast through July 20th. Note that the Northern Plains are not immune from the chilly weather either; Mark Vogan says that Minneapolis hasn't failed to hit 90 in the last 15 years.

And how hot has it been on the west coast and in the midwestern plains this year??? Seattle has been seeing over 90 degree days a LOT this summer.

Maybe the weather pattern is changing? Hmm...

Yeah ghani, according to O'Bomber, Pee-Lousi, Reid and Algore the Earth is going to turn into a burned out cinder...and we, principally in the US, are to blame.

But, there's no use denying the earth has been in a cooling trend since 1999 and it still is in a cooling trend.

The real climate scientists..as opposed to the junk science crackpot scientists grow more concerned every day that the sun hasn't resumed it's sunspot activity.

The trend in sunspot activity looks, to real climate scientists, like a repeat of the sunspot pattern of the "Little Ice Age".

Well jwhop I`m one that hits the nightly 36 degree temp. We`re in the 40`s at night now and the days have struggled to see 65 during the July heat time. We`ve broke record low nights/low days so many times I quit counting ...

Global warming??

I`m grabbing my flannels & hibernating so wake me up when it`s over

Some places are warming up, others are cooling down. I believe Mt. Shasta is of interest here, so I'll add that the glacier there is GROWING. Even like a hundred miles away, some are finding they now need to wear jackets as the temperature has dropped, even by the ocean.

I think global warming is bullshiese also. Read the book "State Of Fear" by Michael Chricton.

Gemini Mercury 25˚
Cancer Venus 29˚ (Mutual reception with Moon)
And yes, i'm a guy!

dervish are you near mt shasta? i had not heard that but most interesting! i'd better get up there before it's too cold. she is one of my favourite earthly heavens...

found this piece
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2008/07/08/state/n130432D99.DTL

though i am not in the camp that says this is a humanly-caused situation, and i am not sure we are still warming or not, i would like to point out that OVERALL warming can create COOLER SUMMERS due to the extra precipitation caused by the evaporation of warming seas. on mt shasta this is causing snow which adds to the glaciers...in a lot of other places it just causes cooler "hot-times" because the SUN IS HIDDEN by rain clouds.

during the eclipse the other day, for instance, the temperature in one part of china (or was it india?) DROPPED BY 8 degrees or so because the sun was obscured.

i think it is possible that the earth is well enough designed that the horror stories won't happen. when it gets warm enough a chain reaction is set up that creates drastic cooling and ice ages that can occur so fast that whole communities in greenland were buried the last time this happened (14th c).

but a cool summer does not mean that the warming phase is over...yet!

Well, you know what the crackpot scientists say...

If it's too hot, it's global warming

If it's too cold, it's global warming

If it's too dry, it's global warming

If it's too wet, it's global warming

If it's just right...it's still global warming.

They're desperate to sell this crackpot idea to the world.

Brrrr Juni

lol jwhop, can't disagree with that!

i remember every may in england there would be a hot spell and the majority of punters would be moaning about the climate change...this would go on for about 2 weeks at the end of which the wind would change and everything back to normal...i experienced this pretty much every year for 21 years. no one remembered the year before when the same thing happened!

i also remember reading a story about a murder (fiction) which took place in 19th century england and a great deal of it focussed on how hot it was that day(made the protagonist crazy). of course HOT is a relative term. in england it can be hot at 80*, and in boston too for that matter.

chicken little is EVERYwhere!

I dont mind it either. I dont have an air conditioner so it's nice that it's been cool. Saves on electricity too.

I mind it , my tomatoes have cold feet and the flowers are 2-3 weeks behind in blooming... Plus, after the brutal winters heat is my bonus for surviving them

Yeah T, we're heading for an ice age..in spite of what the Chicken Littles say about global warming due to rising CO2 levels.

Finally katatonic..something we can agree on.

I've heard of late plantings juni but spring plantings in June and July is pushing the envelope.

Jul 28, 2009 5:55 am US/Central Chicago Sees Coldest July In 66 Years
Average Temperature Only 68.9 Degrees

Have you left your air conditioner in the closet this summer, and worn long pants more often than shorts? If so, you may not be surprised to find out that Chicago is seeing its coldest July in more than 65 years.

The National Weather Service says 2009 has seen the coldest July since the official recording station was moved away from the lakefront in 1942. The average temperature this month in Chicago has been a mere 68.9 degrees.

Even in the years before 1942, when the National Weather Service recorded temperatures at the cooler lakefront, there are only three years that had colder Julys through the 26th.

There have also been far fewer days than usual with high temperatures less than 80 degrees this year. In 2009, there were 13 days where the temperature did not exceed 80 degrees. Only three Julys in the past 67 years have had more days in Chicago with highs less than 80 – there were 18 such days in 1992, and 14 in 1996 and 2000.

We have also failed to reach 90 degrees at any time this month.

But the good news is that homeowners this summer have been seeing a big break on their electric bills. Air conditioning usage, according to ComEd earlier this month, is way down from last year and has saved residents an average of $50 since June, compared with last year.

In addition to the mild weather, Com Ed's cost of power was also down 9 percent as of July 17, a savings passed on to you. Your natural gas price has been down even more, 27 percent. Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas estimate a typical home customer will pay $500 less this year than last year.
