Any of you volunteering your time and expertise for a worthy cause?I used to volunteer at the library. Now I want to volunteer in a soup kitchen but it would be nice to do it at a place with no religious affiliation. Anybody on LL volunteering in their free time? IP: Logged |

i often volunteered for art, film and music festivals that were underground or not-for-profit. i still contribute my writings to a magazine without pay. but it's always been more cultural stuff than charity.IP: Logged |

man i never managed to do anything in Japan, i really didn't figure out how to get me involved into things there, it was like a social maze...just in the US and Europe. and it was really fun to meet lots from people from all over the world coming to these events to participate and view! i hope to find some new stuff and maybe do similar things again... Wow, little Yin, I was so gonna start that thread myself, after the rich people one!I do! I love it! I don't pat myself on the back and say, "oh, good little Gypsee" because if the truth be known I get something out of it. I get a good feeling. Anyway, I cut hair at the nursing home, and sometimes just hang out and chat. The elderly are a hoot, I love them. I have been volunteering at the battered womens shelter for years. I wanted to be an art therapist and work with battered women, but I haven't finished my degree...maybe someday, or maybe not. Either way, there is a payoff, it makes me happy. Never tried a soup kitchen, my mom does this every Thanksgiving though. IP: Logged |

wow, CPN! I admire all that you do, that is alot!Yin, what I do at the womens shelter: okay, they have a room it is like the size of my house and a half. Anyway, instead of taking things to Goodwill (which sells them in their stores, nothing against Goodwill, they do alot) I always encourage people to drop their unwanted usuable stuff to the womens shelter. When I go, I help organize the donations. We separate into sizes of clothes, boy/girl clothes, housewares, etc. When a woman has to start all over she needs stuff. She can come there and "shop" so to speak. They are way understaffed, and undervolunteered, so it is a job and a half. IP: Logged |

I go out with a ministry that feeds the homeless. My role is playing music all night, though, so no huge sacrifice, and honestly I ditched them the whole month of July due to improv and a party.IP: Logged |

Yeah, I devote most my time to helping people with what some may call a talent. Mainly on here Though, most on here have access to a computer, I dont really help the less fortunate much. They would not have much or any access to a computer. Unfortunately, with some of my tips, I might have helped people who have more money than sense, and probably people who need to clean money. Works in a good way and bad. IP: Logged |

I volunteer when I am in Jhb at a friend's charity Iyokholwa House, a children's home. They have abandoned kids, HIV positive kids and kids who are homeless, those looking for adoption. We play with them, give them toys and just hang out. I am playing them guitar next. IP: Logged |

I'm more of a "random acts of kindness" type of person. Let's see, quickly coming to mind are...Cleaning up the glass and other trash around this neighborhood. And like when I some some cretin pulled a nail at a gazebo in a nearby park (that would rip clothes, and possibly skin), I went home, got a hammer, went back and nailed it back down and checked on it for a long time. Animals seem to instinctively come to me for some reason. One tom who was very independent and wouldn't let anyone touch him came to me when he had antifreeze poisoning (normally cats like that hide when they get sick, as if evading a predator)--speaking of which, I then printed up flyers about better types of antifreeze to use and spread them around the neighborhood after that, too. The weirdest one was when I had a precognitive dream. I dreamt I was walking home from the library on Christmas (as if it would be open), a Catholic Church was all lit up, and a cat I never saw before called out to me and I got him some food. Some time later, it actually happened, save it was Easter instead of Christmas, and I walked BY the library instead of from it, but even the cat--who I never saw before--was identical to in my dream. One person around here who has cats lost her job and couldn't find another one and an evil bureaucrat sabotaged her unemployment apparently just for fun. She managed to get on welfare, but that didn't cover paper and pet products, so I picked up those things and snuck them onto her back patio late at night (I didn't want her to know it was me because she could wonder what my angle was and I didn't want her to feel nervous, or embarrassed). She knew it was me, though, because apparently like my jokes, "no one else would think to do it." Still, I got good karma from that because she later got hired as an assistant manager at a health food store I go to and got me my favorite spritzers on her discount which was a very nice break for me. I've recently took care of someone very sick and hosted 2 b-day parties for free. In the past I used to go to vegetarian potlucks, noticed the vegans didn't like all the cheese (seems cheese is the typical vegetarian's answer to making about anything taste good and be filling...), so I found some vegan recipes and often made more than one dish so that the vegan minority there had an actual meal worth having. Speaking of which, I've donated to Food Not Bombs, but I didn't get along with a couple of members so I didn't feel inclined to help them otherwise. I organized a Thanksgiving and Christmas potluck for people who can't be with their families (because of distance, issues like being gay or abused, etc), though I organized it because I missed it myself. I don't consider street artists & entertainers to be beggars and I'm frequently generous to them. Especially when I lived in Venice, CA. I used to volunteer at a library, but their board & director royally offended me and I left. I still seem to act as an unofficial volunteer anyway, though I'm now in a different area. Anyway, other things are coming to mind, but that's the gist of how I volunteer. IP: Logged |

To my shame, no I don't volunteer for a "worthy cause", although I do volunteer. I would like to and I think I should, given my ranting lately about what "rich people" should and shouldn't do.Gypsee, I would also like to volunteer in an old folk's home. I don't know what I would do there given that my skills don't lie in hairdressing. Reading to them perhaps? Art? I'm always a bit wary that they will think I'm after their inheritances etc. I agree, I find old people a hoot too. IP: Logged |

Right, ok, tired of yapping and doing nothing. So just filled out an enquiry form for the WRVS. They have a scheme called "Good Neighbours" which means you go and pick up a prescription or do shopping for an old person in your area. Let you know how it goes. IP: Logged |
