for me, the bottom line is this: love me or hate me, it doesn't change my feelings for you. just my feelings about myself, but i'm working on it. IP: Logged |

Ok great! So Koi has indeed had occasion to note someone's lack of virtue, which undoubtedly spawned a number of conversations. A Godzalan is indeed ok with talking about virtue (and like most of these conversations it happened away from LL). There we go. Anyone else wish to comment regarding the subject of this thread?V, my response to your last post is in your email. I have a feeling you'll think it's personal or something, so I'm not posting it here. IP: Logged |

Indeed. quote: I stay away from comenting on valus thread, not because i disagree or don't have anything to share, cause I believe I do, but i dislike some of his argument. i appreciate him very much, very much, but i find it sad that I should have to justify my appreciation of him to get understood.
There are a number of smart people that feel the same way. They don't comment for fear of offending. IP: Logged |

I agree it is okay to talk about virtue, but perhaps not ones own virtuousness. If you have to point it out, that takes away the core of the virtue itself, wouldn't you think? I'm quite sure when we find one to be virtuous, although we may say so to them or to others, they won't need to hear it. My two cents. IP: Logged |

ghani, for the most part, i agree with you. but if someone is trying to articulate something virtuous, and they "lapse" into personal experience, in order to illustrate their point, can we still hear the good in what they are saying? Or are we always going to focus on the personal to the detriment of the lesson? Are we always going to be concerned with determining the speaker's motives, and not with the greater or lesser value of what they are contributing? Is it our place, anyway, to worry and bicker, and try to justify our suspiciousness? Or can we just see, with fresh eyes, whatever is placed before us? See it, without projecting a thousand anxious and defensive interpretations onto it. Just hear what it is saying. Is it, ultimately, making a positive or negative statement? Does it stand for something good, or bad? Talking about virtue is a good thing. Compared to actually enacting virtuous deeds, it may be lacking, but in relation to just about anything else you can think of, talking about virtue is a damn good thing. Essentially, that's all this thread is saying. IP: Logged | |
