I can try to work it out.

You have clothes and a duvet.

They got messed up. How?

Did the washing machine stain them? Or are the stains from having your duvet AND clothes messed up?

How long after the 'staining' did you throw them into the washing machine?

Sorry to be pedantic. But stains are specific and have to be treated carefully.

Eg, blood and red wine need salt. Other stains need vinegar....

The washing machine stained them, they were washed separately.

You can still post here. Central deals with all types of topics.

Soak (in separate buckets) both items in extremely salty water. Pour at least a cup of salt in each bucket.

It's best if the fabrics haven't dried yet.

Then after a couple of hours - hand wash each item - Sorry, yes hand wash, for the best result.

Is it a duvet or just the cover?

Handwashing a duvet cover in the bath is easiest. If it's the actual duvet - then you'll have to wash it in someone elses washing machine.

ACTUALLY STOP BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING ELSE!

What type of stain is it first?

If it is a stain from dye then DON'T put it in salt.

I think you should put it in sugar - personally..

jk

Do a sweet & sour thing - with lemon and sugar.. maybe they'll smell so nice, your parents won't notice the stains hehe

Jon - you're goning to give up on me because I'm going to ask more questions.

Did you put ALL new items into the washing machine together?

What colour were those items?

Was it the washing machine that stained it with rust(?)?

Or was it the fact that all NEW fabrics were placed into the washing machine together?

This is really highlighting why doing the laundry is a ripe pain in the proverbial.

Who said housework was easy?

Yeah - rereading the OP, I get the general picture.

Never, imo, NEVER put NEW things into SOMEONE elses washing machine.

Know the beast, that's what I say.

Laundry is a skill. An art passed down through many generations.

Get it wrong and there goes your social life, hence your mating partner, hence your future off-spring.

His parents really need to get a new washing machine or there may be no grandchildren. Unless there is a bogan element to their ideals and then it shouldn't be an issue.

If you give a list of each item's fabric content, I might be able to help.
Each of these take a totally different method to remove stains.
100% Cotton
Cotton Poly blends
100% Poly
Rayon
Rayon blends (cotton, nylon, Lycra)
100% Acrylic
Wool
wool blends
Linen
And so forth.
Also EXACTLY WHAT KIND OF STAINS? Simple color bleeds? What color?
Were any of the items dry clean only?

How long have the stains been dried in?
You did not by some chance have a pen or marker in a pocket?

Let me know.

Oh, also...wash ONE WHITE THING in the washer. If it comes out fine, then it is not the washer that messed things up.
Also dry the white item alone to see if there is something like a crayon or ball point pen, or marker gunk in dryer causing the problem.
As to rust, unless you left them after washing, in the washer for hours, generally even a rusty machine will not stain.
Salt...NO NO NO! Salt sets color when dying.
Same for vinegar.
As to your saying "bloody stains", I assume you do not mean actual blood?

They are mainly light shades of greens, blues, and yellows. Argh! And they got prints on em does that help, or make things worse?

Ouch
Colored cottons.
Not always easy to fix without fading or removing all or most of the colors..
Again, EXACTLY WHAT IS THE STAINING FROM?
Color bleed from the duvet?
What color?
Is it spotty or did it totally tint everything?
Or is it oil, grease or rust or what?
Is the washing machine the culprit?
Did you try to see if washing one white item is OK? If it comes out fine, then the washer should be fine.
I will check back in a few minutes and then in a few hours.
I hope you did not put them in the dryer.
Do not bleach unless all white.
Again, exact fabric content is important to know what will fix the problem.
And exact type of stains.
LOL! If you lived near me. I'd just try and fix it all for you in my washing machine using all my laundry tricks! Rare are stains I cannot find a way to remove.

So many questions!! Hence proving how complicated laundry is - it's a pure science.

Doesn't look good. I'm thinking you put everything together. If they're all new, all the colour would run into each item. You could try handwashing them all using laundry powder. But, more info required....

Try "Frend". It's a New Zealand product I swear by. Spray it on the stain (wet it first), then leave for 20 minutes.

Then handwash.

You could also use baby soap with a nail brush and gently try and to flick it off. Wash again.

I'm suspecting it may be a build-up caused by humidity. I know it can get quite humid in Auckland.

There is hope!!
