Just an unnecessary computer clarification note:

When you are downloading a program, the first program you download is one that guides the installation. Clicking 'Open' will allow you to start the installation immediately once it's downloaded, so it's not necessary to save it (by clicking the Save button).

cpn, yeah, free...! glaucus mentioned this page brothersoft.com once. there are other free similar programs there but this one is the best.

I hope starkiss sorted it out, AG, we make it sound easy don't we? but yeah, I didn't know what you said here. starkiss, any progress?

AD, if your kids are interested in astronomy, they will soon show you all you can do with it. better than a videogame

Starkiss, what kind of a hissy fit does your computer throw? Does it lock up?

Musette,
It goes into weird images and freezes . Then I have to switch it off and when I switch it on again it tells me "the system recovered from a serious error".

Hmmmm.... It could be a graphics card issue. Do you have the latest drivers installed for your graphics card?

Just to be clear, were you able to install it at all - or is it freezing when you open the installation file?

Okay, so you do have it installed? If so, you can try this to get it to work:

Download a patch from here: www.ziddu.com/download/9672634/stel_patched.rar.html

Inside the Stallarium folder on your computer there is a config.ini file. Find it and open it with any text program (Word or Notepad, etc.). Underneath [main] type this: use_qpaintenginegl2 = false (to replace use_qpaintenginegl2 = true). Save the edited config.ini file.

Try starting the program again. If it works, great!

If not, you can try to download and install one of the earlier versions of Stellarium, like 0.10.2 which is available at http://sourceforge.net/projects/stellarium/files

Good luck!
