Have an employer that treated them badly or indifferently because they took sick leave?

Sadly it does even though it shouldn't be like that especially when you put in sick leave a month in advance because you know you had an appointment scheduled and the sick form was authorized!!!!!

Sorry for the rant.I just don't understand that type of logic.Yes, there are people that abuse sick leave eg.wake feeling tired and think "oh, I'll call in sick today as I have sick days available.."

Yet not everyone abuses it.

Then there's cases where even though you are genuinely ill and go to work the following day you're treated asif it was fake.Bleh.

It's THEIR problem. And I'll take a "sick" day if I need a refuge day for my soul. I don't give a crap what any nutcase thinks about it. ♥ Well, you know I worry about the feelings of bosses/employees I care for and would never want to make thinks hugely difficult for them... but in the situation you described the people would have to be nuts to have a problem with it. They had advance notice to make arrangements if needed and they should care about your/the person's health and well-being just as much as their own or screw 'em and don't worry about their selfish butts at all.

Badly and very indifferently yeah. I am on sick leave now and for the last 3-4 year. So is the rest of the unemployed. I hear McDonalds are employing.

Yep.

I've been fired from more than one job for having surgery that I didn't expect.

sadly, in the business I'm in it's all about 'being there' and if you aren't there, somebody else will be.

One of my last jobs, my employer said, "just suck it up, I need surgery too, but you don't see me GETTING it!!"

Whatever.

The job I'm at now, one of the ladies that has been there 7 years needs double knee surgery. Replacement surgery because she can hardly walk.
The employers cannot wait until she goes in for surgery, they plan on giving her hours away, and not giving them back when she's recovered (two months).

People are so cruel sometimes.

I'm not really sure, Charm. I've thought about this soooo much though.

Having Lupus is a daily struggle which I don't expect everyone to understand.
However, SURGERY, you would think, would be something anyone with FEELINGS can understand.

I was told that I didn't have a good work ethic. That gave me pause for cause, and really made me think.
Perhaps I don't??
I mean, I don't call in sick if I'm not, I go in early on literally a moments notice, I fill in for other people when they need to do 'important' things, like; the other day when someone wanted to get their pet groomed. (rolls eyes) so, I expect at least a dash of respect and the same treatment back, but that isn't the way things seem to be.

Some people have this innate sense of work, like that is EVERYTHING, and yes, it's important, but so is your health, and your family.
After all, if you don't have your health, or at least try and take care of it, you can't work, so it would seem that employers would want you to take care of yourself, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

I've been really trying to 'suck it up', these days, I know that work is an area I need to improve.

But, I still don't understand the lack of compassion, and why people cannot understand that not everyone has optimum health. Those that do are extremely lucky, and should not put down those that don't.
I would think this would be really bad for your karma, if you believe in that, which I do.

There’s much contradiction when it comes to health and work i.e.
Employers say e.g. if you’re ill stay at home don’t come to work when you know you have the flu and infect everyone else because a worker cant be productive if they’re ill…

Yet just do that then it’s a problem. “It’s not personal, just business.”??? How can it not feel like it’s personal when as you mentioned everything extra you have done isn’t even taken into account.

Bad karma indeed, why make someone feel guilty for something which is out of their control?

What type of Lupus do you have Gypsy?

Oh, they always seem to be doing that.

For example, they'll figure in "goof off time" talking at the water cooler (whether or not you do it) when determining salary or pay, despite that this is usually needed for good team work & brain storming, but won't figure in the cost you'll pay in psyche meds, therapy, and/or booze and coffee just so you can stand the crap job that expects total loyalty from you while giving you none in return.

As far as they're concerned, you're an easily replaceable cog, as opposed to a person to be treated as having rights or with dignity. I can't imagine being a wage slave. Most companies just aren't worth my loyalty.

I'm so glad I can work for myself, though I do wish I could figure a more sure way to support myself in a rural location rather than depending on a heavily populated urban area to make enough. Well, I COULD go live with Granny, but that's a last resort...

When I went on maternity leave I was the only Credit Analyst at the company I worked for. I pretty much created the position. I even wrote the training handbook for the Credit Analyst.

So I trained this woman to replace me while I was on maternity leave. After my leave was up I came back to find that she had taken over. They gave my position to her and moved me to another department where I was laid off 4 months later...after 4 years of working there....ouch.

I am sorry you are experiencing this.
I have much to say on this topic being an ex Human Resources Manager but this was for a small business of around 125 employees.

My greatest lesson going through my personal health crisis was that it gave me the gift of compassion.

Compassion is a virtue and most people who have compassion have "passed through" an experience themselves courageously and can guide and support others.

Not everyone is aware of their ability to be compassionate as they are still "self serving."

I hope things get easier for you!

I have SLE, Charm. (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus)

My employer asked me for the name and location of my doctor! I have never taken off work to go to my appointments, so I have no idea why he needs this information. I gave it to him though, because, having worked in the medical field, I know that he will get NO info from the docs office, lest they violate HIPPA laws, which everyone in the medical world is terrified of doing.
I think he just wanted to intimatidate me!! Seriously! Like a suble, I want to know who your doc is and where he is located, just in case I need to speak with him about your condition... kinda thing.

I like your post Dervish! Don't compromise yourself unless you have no other options.

I agree with you totally Mermaid. People without compassion are like walking targets for some kind of personal crisis. I'm not trying to judge them, I just see it over and over.
Seems like God or whatever you believe in, will make you aware of others suffering one way or another.

WinkAway, that's terrible! It hurts my heart to know that your job did that to you! Ouch is right! So sorry...

Charmainec... No heads up was given. As far as I knew this woman I trained was a temporary replacement until I returned from maternity leave. So when I got back, I was pulled into the director's office where she told me in so many words that they liked her better.
Then they moved me to the lockbox department where my newly hired co-workers were making around $5/hour less than I was. I knew something had to give. They weren't going to keep paying me a Credit Analyst salary when they didn't have to.

Gypsee... that BITES!
I worked at a place once where I took a couple days off for a grand parent passing away. My boss wanted either a copy of the flyer you get from the funeral or the obituary from the newspaper. And the look she kept giving me upon asking for this would melt ice. I seriously think control freaks love the manager positions to satisfy this need to.....control others....ugg.

What a wonderful Post. Gosh do i have a few story's to tell.

I will start with Lets see. Hmmmmmm.

Ok My boss went out of town for his church function. So He left me the keys to the store to close up when i left in the middle of the day. I normally work grave yard so it tossed me off a bit to work back to back just to have 4 hours off just to come back for grave. Well I show up back at the store for my shift 10pm. . . He was not there yet. So i wait with a friend. That was nice enough to chill with me during this time. Oh just to top it off cold and windy outside. But i did not want to open the door to the store because i did not want customers showing up seeing how i don't have access to change out the drawers. That and my boss told me to wait for him to show up. This carrys on for a hour. Get tired of waiting. Annoyed and ****** and Hungry! Cant forget that. Go to the restaurant across the street to eat while getting warm. I ordered a simple item some thing that is kinda fast chicken strips and right as soon as the plate shows up. My boss storms in.

"What are you doing here? Told you to be at the store!!"
" Your so useless"

I mean This guy went off at me because i had the keys and he could not open. He was already a hour and 30 mins late and he expected me to be out in front of the store in the cold? So i am sitting at the booth with my friend Red face that i just got yelled at in front of a room full of people that i stand up toss money on the table and walk out after him.

Oh it dose not stop. He still Ranting on once i get to the store. Tells me i can go back and finish eating. . . I felt that was a slap in my face. I had a very ugly look on my face i was glaring at him i could not help it i really wanted to punch him. For making me feel like dirt when he was the one late.

The kicker was to all that. I ended up working the shift. Mad as hell. But he try to lie to me telling me he was there waiting for me for 45 mins. Its a gas station. No cars in lot all lights off in side. I knew how long i was there for my food because i kept checking the clock over and over. No more then 15 or so min. I was truly speechless. So i grit my teeth bit my toung worked that night and Stormed out the min he walked in for his shift. . .

But that is only one of the Meany story's i have from working for this man.

Before my shift. True it was very bad timing. it was like 45 min. I woke up my friend was in my room on my comp playing i sit up feel sick. Not just any sick oh no Like i had to puke. Its gross but ya i just made it to the end of the bed and could not stop. It was so nasty. Eh Makes me gag thinking about. Well i had to call in that night. I worked for this guy 2 years and this was my first call in right before my shift. I only had 3 mybe 4 days off before that thruout the whole 2 years.

So i carryed on i cleaned up what i just did scrubbing the carpit and washing the sheets and what not. Called him to tell him he made it seem like i should have called him before hand that i was not coming in. . .
"You know you are suppost to tell me beofore you call in sick"

"So i can get some rest or have some one els cover for you"

"Why do you do this to me?"

It was a huge guilt trip. Mind you i did not feel sick at all before going to sleep. Just woke up pow! On top of feeling ill and gross i felt like **** because i had this feeling in me that i had let him down. Like i was in the wrong. For what? Waking up and vomiting?

The next day same lines he fed me over the phone. But in a more friendly tone like he was joking or some thing. Still could see he was sierous. So for 2 days i felt like crap and still went to work.

In truth thinking back to working for this Horrible man. He had me do some off the wall stuff. I wish i had just quit. He made me feel as if i should be privliged working for him. He told me over and over oh people asking him for a job bleh bleh. I would like to see half the people put up with him. He was rude to me. All the time. Told me to do some of the most off the wall task. Like Go clean the gass pumps and wash the windows outside with it being like 20 degrees the damn water was freezing to the windows and on the pumps...

Ya i know Some may look over this and say suck it up. Or maybe think ahh not so bad. It was a day to day Guilt trip on top of Dealing with drunks and druggies that walked in to the store. Or worring about if i mess this up it comes out of my check or if this brakes it comes out of my check.

The cherry on the top. The man did not ever EVER!!!! wear any kinda of deodorant. . It was 24 hour Bo smell. Oh god I think that was just the worst.

So that is some storys about my boss old boss.
