Today was Memorial Day in America.

It's the day we recognize the sacrifices in life and hardship of our military personnel; both those of today and those who have fallen and passed into history.

I had thought, surely there will be Memorial Day thread to commemorate the Day.

How odd don't you think that not one American here thought it important enough to so much as call attention to the Day.

Yet, there are those here who think of themselves as intellectually, morally and spiritually superior to those who are the sharp point on the spear held by the long arms of Uncle Sam; those who willingly protect you at the risk of their own lives.

Don't delude yourselves guys, there's nothing for you to feel superior about. Even the women of the US military have higher levels of testosterone than you do.

"Today, we gather to honor those who gave everything to preserve our way of life. The men and women we honor here served for liberty. They sacrificed for liberty. And in countless acts of courage, they died for liberty. From faraway lands, they were returned to cemeteries like this one, where broken hearts received their broken bodies --they found peace beneath the white headstones in the land they fought to defend.

It is a solemn reminder of the cost of freedom that the number of headstones in a place such as this grows with every new Memorial Day. In a world where freedom is constantly under attack and in a world where our security is challenged, the joys of liberty are often purchased by the sacrifices of those who serve a cause greater than themselves. Today we mourn and remember all who have given their lives in the line of duty. Today we lift up our hearts especially to those who have fallen in the past year.

The soil of Arlington and other sites is filled with liberty's defenders. It is nourished by their heroism. It is watered by the silent tears of the mothers and fathers, and husbands and wives, and sons and daughters they left behind. Today we pray for God's blessing on all who grieve and ask the Almighty to strengthen and comfort them today and everyday.

I am humbled by those who have made the ultimate sacrifice that allow a free civilization to endure and flourish. It only remains for us, the heirs of their legacy, to have the courage and the character to follow their lead -- and to preserve America as the greatest nation on earth and the last best hope for mankind.

May God bless you and may God bless America.

I looked for one earlier, but my computer kept restarting on me (I'm still trying to sort it out), and then I had to run to be with my family - one of whom is a Veteran.

I have more than one member of the family, from both sides of the pond (UK and the US), who have served in the military, and fought for their countries (and each other, since they were technically on the same sides).

Diverting away slightly...

Yes MP George, the cost of freedom. Lots more jobs and levels to enter at, but saw many adverts for the British armed forces. Sure, you get nice bonuses, but McDonalds workers only get pounds less. I find it more shocking that troops, no matter how small the (real) risk may seem, get by (and with them perks, get by well) on just that bit more than a McD's worker and less than a standard office worker.

This says a lot about the country we have here. You can go over the details, but the attitude towards the value of troops in this country, to Me, seems to show by what action is taken.

Sure, we celebrate the anniversaries, welcome troops home, and also when they pass (seems to happen everyday.)

Not saying the Brits don't care, I'm saying the troops could be treated much better. Like they are of actual value to our country and not under office worker in the pay scale.

All very formal and made to remember in England, I thought that was the same in the US. You lot seem to take much more pride in your country than us over here, maybe its just the films I watch.

I guess some don't need a reminder of bad things. Only guessing, to bring up your point.

Thanks for posting this, Jwhop. I spent the day out so I am only now posting and reading LL. Our family members have served in US, UK and French militaries, and I am especially proud of my father who served the US.

Dee, you must be very proud of your father for his bravery and sacrifices.

Coffee, the low pay is shocking. I'm not sure about US wages but I hope we pay them decently. I do know that the US military will provide a college education at least, which is good as university fees in this country can be very expensive.

I have trouble with the pay, and also the length you sign up for. Not sure what it's like in America, but I always though we were free people, not tied like slaves to a job like that. An easy choice for many on low wages, virtually guaranteed a job on passing tests.

Price of freedom eh?

I've nothing against Memorial Day, soldiers, etc. But this:

quote:
Don't delude yourselves guys, there's nothing for you to feel superior about. Even the women of the US military have higher levels of testosterone than you do.

Maybe it's the lateness of the hour, but I couldn't help but love the concept of superiority through testosterone. So if I want to become a better person I should take T pills?

I know, they should call it "T day"!

Ok, seriously, I do enjoy some of Toby Keith's patriotic songs--such as "Courtesy of the Red, White, & Blue (The Angry American)"--those songs striking me as expressing testosterone (as opposed to the mother bear/lioness amazon archetype, pragmatic warriors, Machiavellian empire builders, militant idealists, global adventurers, etc), but that just made me laugh, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading that, but obviously I'm not the target audience. And it reminded me of a scene I loved in a movie I haven't even thought of in years:

"Blackroot? I'm the father of two children, and you never, ever give a baby blackroot."

"Well my mother raised us on it. It's good for you! It put's hair on your chest, right Sticks?"

"Her name is not Sticks! She's Elora Dannen, the future empress of Tir Asleen and the last thing she's gonna want is a hairy chest!"

--Willow (movie)

MVM

I have 2 grandparents...both passed.. who were in WWII. One was in Pearl Harbor. The other was a POW. And a nephew who is in the service now.

So for all service men and women in whatever country you reside, and to those who have family as such either dead or alive... much respect

yes, we should remember all that have served and lost thier lifes as a sacrifice for our freedom.

we also should respect them upon thier return home so they don't end up homeless on the streets like many our of our vietnam vets are now.

these kids serving now have seen horrific things that they may never be able to overcome thinking about and being affected by. most of which come home and have trouble even finding a minimum wage job, and of course end up on a watch list for extreme actions. very very sad, the way we treat our military.

it is also sad the way we treat mother earth, but there was no thread on earth day to honor her either.

no coffee, our troops are not treated very well either. those lucky enough to return home, have a hard time even getting hte counselling they need to make a transition. no jobs. many now homeless, alcoholics, beggars. you don't have to go far to see a sign that someone is holding that says, I am a veteran, please help. stuff like that.

its very very sad.

memorial day is lip service. if we cared about our vets, we would take care of them.

actions speak louder than words.

Indeed, CPN. It is all lip service. These people go off to war and come home and get some medals but their houses are taken away and they have to deal with no care from health insurance, and all these ridiculous expenses.
Who cares about the medals when the very basics aren't tended to?!

Just look at so many of the Vietnam Vets - so many of them homeless and beggars and with all kind of mental problems.

Oh, but they have Memorial Day, and Veteran's Day. Pffft. Big deal.

exactly MVM. I get a day off work with pay to honor them.... while they have to beg for money for food and live under bridges... how is that in any way right?

so very sad.
