I'm sure there is some way to migrate your data base to a new software platform

No, a different board software is incompatible with UBB. Like I said, I can upgrade to the new UBB and keep the same style settings and all of the posts. The smilies would be broken images in all of the posts, though. It's something I have to weigh (this vs that).

No facelift in my opinion,either.
LL feels like home.
Home does not have to have the newest technologies.
It feels comfy how it is

Absolutely! The energies that helped create Lindaland is alive and moves through the forums as a creative entity that is her soul and back bone. To lose it is unthinkable

I don't mind changing things up some (like the Quote Button I added), but I'm not going to throw out the baby with the bath water.

You are so wise, Juni. I believe that, too. Lindaland is a thoughtform...created and fed by the thoughts, emotions, and energy of every single contributor. She is alive.

I think (if it's possible) the 'Show Signature' automatically checked would be cool.

I disagree with all of you, and with good reason. Point by point I have rebuttals for everything you said Randall. I will concede that you can purchase an upgrade of your forum software. I suggested switching to a free software that is constantly being improved, and which will stay free. (You can trasfer UBB to SMF, too)

The history is just hoarding. It's letters from a past love that you keep in a shoebox. Those people have passed, and their personalities went with them. If you cared about the history, you wouldn't be cavalier about seeing people to the door. The real personality of LL is whatever today's members bring to the table, same as always.

Curious AG when you listen to a favorite tune from your past, are you hoarding memories or the energy from that particular time & tune ?
(edited to add) Memories ARE energy!

I don't know that this is an apples to apples comparison. If I heard some song on the radio that I don't own, how would I be hoarding it?

With regard to the forum, the history can be saved one way or another. I just question the use of it. I, myself, can take pleasurable strolls down memory lane here whenever I like, and I don't find myself doing it all that often. I don't think I'm unusual in this regard.

There's loads of free bulletin boards out there, and I do like some of them. It does say to "proceed with caution" with converting at the link you gave. Anyway, I value Lindaland's history. I think throwing it away is disrespectful. And I love our current platform. I like the idea of making some minor improvements, but I am not going to discard all that we have created over the years. Sorry to disappoint you, AG.

You "own" the memory or energy of the tune, yes?

Back to the program, Avatars would be nice but the search function , I believe, would be a most valuable addition.

At least now you've given me what I wanted, which was consideration.

I did notice that it said proceed with caution. The point needed to be made that, in fact, many of the forum platforms out there will do conversions (you could try one with a back up copy if you wished to test it). If I were building a forum I'd probably only consider vBulletin (which costs money) or SMF. I don't know if any others have come up in the time since I last researched this, but I think these are pretty solid.

Juni, I still think it's irrelevant. I love all kinds of old songs. I love songs way more than even my old forum posts, so comparing them doesn't really work for me. It's like my old keyboard. It was one that I could actually program music on, and by program I mean something closer to what you'd call record. It stored my songs on an old 3.5" floppy disk. Several years ago now, someone tipped my keyboard over breaking the disk drive. I've not heard any of those songs since. I could've had the drive repaired, but I didn't. I'd still like to listen to what I made, but I can't, and that's the end of it. It's nothing that's going to adversely affect my life from this point forward. It's like a house you used to live in, or a car you used to drive. You remember them, but you don't need them.

I disagree. Nothing beats the newest UBB. If anything, I would go with that upgrade.

I don't know about the Ubb vs the s-thingy but I second the Search functions and avatars.

And I think Avatars are better than search because I feel "Seeing" a person will hopefully make people reconsider before posting hurtful comments than just a string of alphabets...it's not a sure-shot, but I can dream

Oh, and a lot of people use an image file instead of an actual pic of themselves with avatars.

Well, with the search function restored, the past Forum posts hold even more significance.

Go with the Upgrade Randall.... I love the history here... I didn't realise you would lose it if you were to switch... I'd probably CRY!!!

So, how much does the upgrade cost??? I am willing to HELP if needed!!!

“It’s an interesting thing. Seeing Kuan Yin relating to a flower so intently. She's not just looking at it; she's interacting with it…I’m seeing how the act of relating to a flower appears to be so simple. Yet, it takes a tremendous amount of courage to make such a “simple” act important. Now, the lotus is floating away.”

I appreciate that, SC, but I can't accept.

I haven't decided to upgrade yet. It would be a trade-off with us losing the smilies in all posts prior to the upgrade (lots of broken images). I am weighing the pros and cons. I restored the search function, though.
