Last one I saw - i think was the latest episode, new season - the Russian mom....

oh boy *steam coming out of ears*

anyone else who saw it want to kill or at least strangle that b!atch?

The poor husband was trying to hold it all together for them

I wanted to scoop that smart little girl up and take her away from her psycho IMMATURE mom.

So terrribly sad, i could almost cry.

lol yeah "Extreme Couponing" on TLC

they end up with like roomfulls, stockpiles of laundry detergent, deoderant, ranch dressing and toilet paper - enough to last a lifetime or two -- all for free!!! woopdee-effing-doo!

Some of them choose to give a lot away to charities which i think is awesome. Then it's worth it. It's like a full time job....or obsession. They spend hours clipping and even more hours figuring out how to get double coupon deals etc.... effing weird. The other ones who don't do it for others who need it more than they do.......i find to be scary people. But that's just me. As poor as i've been i could never see myself doing that. And most of these extreme couponing people arent even poor. *shudders*

seems like a few of the girl tots like what they are doing - or what their moms are forcing them to do

but 95% of the kids don't want anything to do with it.

none of the families ive seen on this shows seemed extremely destitute it's all a game and competition to them. It's a frickin' fad right now. And for some reason i can't stand to see well off people stockpiling sh!t, in nice rooms in their big houses, when others out there are starving.

I don't think I will watch it. I hate that they won't let their little girls be little girls. It's bad enough when guys are coming onto the teenagers (I remember being disgusted and sometimes scared, when I was just fourteen), but those little ones being dressed up like that? I don't get it.

I got annoyed when I was reading an interview with Jennifer Garner, just before Christmas. I usually like her, but one part in which she talked about tougher times in relationships, and her husband being gone for work, or other things going on there.. but knowing just when to swoop in with a diamond bracelet? I think that's the way she put it. I wanted to gag. I was already in a bad mood, and maybe it was unfair of me to judge her - they seem to be really good people - but we were wondering if we would have enough for the food we were buying, and are usually just getting by. It just reminded me that some people, no matter how humble their beginnings, seem to have no concept of how things are for a lot of people out there.

Why watch a show that will upset you?

I've had shows upset me before and I stopped watching them, even when I recognized some good (or at least intriguing) writing, and in one case I actually wanted to know what happened but simply couldn't stand the horrendous scenes of torture, violence, and abuse (luckily, wikipedia summed it up for my satisfaction).

I guess some children on T&T must look adorable, so I can imagine why some watch it (assuming it only rarely bothers them).

But Extreme Couponing? I'm loading a vid from the show right now out of morbid curiosity and amazement that someone made a show about this. I surprised myself by watching almost 3 minutes before boredom set in (I thought they'd at least have tips...). I wonder how long until they have a show on drying paint.

Ok, I'm loading a vid from T&T now...2 minutes this time, I think I saw the Russian mom T mentions ("they cut her down!" "they hate her!" "they did it on purpose!" "I want to go home!"). That was very disturbing and sad. If that's typical there's no way I'd watch it.

I don't know why i tune in sometime either.

I guess I don't think it should be ignored....but not sure what to do yet...

Yeah, that was the same Russian mom. And yes, seeing the entire episode was even more disturbing. She flipped out worse than a two year old and she was supposed to be the mother????

The little girl at one point hid under the desk in the room when mom was having a meltdown & said "my mom's acting weird." &

"they love me when I win" or something like that. It was clearly all about the mother and her issues. I felt sorry when the little girl didnt win the crown for her age group (which meant she actually won a higher title) and her brother had to console her because the mother wasnt even woman enough to be in the room and support her because she screamed: "they hate her!!!" over and over again (in front of the poor girl). But when she finally did win, who's the first person she ran to show it to? Too bad she had to go find her mom outside crying somehwere because the mom thought the pagent was rigged against her. Nutcase.

Her dad, and brothers were telling her she did great, but she broke into tears partlly because mom wasnt there was acting like an infant outside somewhere crying like a toddler when she shouldve been inside cheeriing for her daugher. Yet the only person she wanted to impress was mom.

It seems alot of these girls come from southern states and the big thing theyve been brainwashed into believing is that money and looks are everything.

A four year old doesnt know the difference between ten dollars and ten thousand dollars, but they hear their moms drilling it into their heads that they need to win MONEY!
WIN the BIG PRIZE, it's all about the MONEY BABIES.... or else they amount to nothing.

The poor kids don't even know what they are talking about but repeat the mantras -- the bat sh!t crazy moms drill into their heads. WORK IT GURRRLLL!!! SEX IT UP EVEN THOUGH YOU ARE ONLY TWO YEARS OLD!

& i don't watch it religiously, but when I do......yeah, it ****** me off.

makes me sad becuase people don't realize how fragile kids are and how much they need to be loved early on........ how their parents, being so immature and unloving, wanting them to make money and be stars, can set them up for a whole world of trouble later.

I'm afraid many of these girls will end up hookers or strippers or porn stars or addicted to drugs and seeking love they never found from the start. Thinking the only way to get by in the world is to look pretty and be people pleasers.

And you can hear the writing on the wall already, by what the girls say in these shows.

They are too young to be so corrupted and confused.

Also don't like the "pageant crack" (pixie sticks powdered candy) and "go-go juice" [ their names for them, not mine ] ( go-go juice = different mixes with different moms) many of them give the girls to get them hyped up on sugar and caffeine thinking that will make them win even when they are dead tired.

Ive seen two episodes so far when a kid was sick and kept saying they wanted to rest, that they just wanted to go to sleep, but the mom made them drink caffinated drinks etc to make them continue on with the show. Another one had a former pageant queen (now her make up/hair artist) who's mom gave her pills when she was younger to help her relax and the little girl knew about it and joked with them about it.

I feel like many of them are on a really terrible path...

I love this picture:

lu at big summer potluck by shauna | glutenfreegirl, on Flickr

It's from Gluten-free girl's flickr account. I've been lost in her book, re-reading it, and having it make me as hungry as it did last March (when I couldn't finish it, for the same reason). I just saw this picture, and it made me think of this thread. That's a little girl being a little girl, and pretty without all of the muss and fuss.

I refuse to watch that show, though I've seen clips.

As a Mom to two little girls...no, just...no.

My ex's Mom even tried to encourage me to put the oldest in pageants when she was younger...again, just no.

On a side note, have you looked at the clothes in major stores for little girls? Once they're past 3, you're in Prosti-Tot land.

I haven't watched the show, but they keep featuring some of the girls and their mothers in news shows for the outrage they evoke.

A couple nights ago, they were showing this one little girl whose mother dressed her up like Madonna; she was performing the Material Girl song and had a couple of boys carry her onstage by holding her up by the arms like in the music video. I think this was the same one whose mother faced widespread criticism for dressing her up like Dolly Parton (complete with padded bottom & top). It gets worse - she recently dressed her up like Julia Roberts' character from Pretty Woman in the little white top, blue skirt & thigh-high boots. Like mockingbird remarked, 'Prosti-tot' indeed.

I have no words to express how shocked and appalled I am that this sort of thing is not only allowed but encouraged!

[As a side note, after all the uproar, that mother seems to have learned - the child's last appearance was in an age-appropriate dress singing an age-appropriate nursery rhyme. But we can't count on people learning from negative publicity - some folks are after any kind of attention. Unless such behavior is made illegal, subject to huge fines, jail time and custody loss, it may not be possible to prevent such cases of child abuse from happening in the first place.]

I work with little girls a lot and even in Southern California I haven't found that to be the case. I've seen little girls mess up or outgrow casual shirts in the summer so that their belly button shows (more thoughtless than intentional, that is they're wearing it until they get some new clothes) and in the summer I've sometimes seen a lot of leg shown (not that I'd call it provocative, but I could see some people raising their brows over it), but even this isn't all too common. I also watch all the people girls look up to (like Selena Gomez) and how they dress (and so imitate when possible) and don't see them normally dressing provocative (not like Britney Spears back when I was a girl, and then girls DID dress like prostitots, even me at times just following the crowd, and schools responded in mass with stricter dress codes across the nation).

I've also seen the news lie a lot, like a few years ago one of the thrift shops I do biz with had trouble because of one asked her if it was ok to sell "this" showing appropriate clothes for a little girl and then an inappropriate one (that is, with part of the clothes removed) and she said "no." They edited it so that she said "yes" to the inappropriate. Thing is, she didn't even sell the inappropriate, it just became that without the full ensemble (which were all on the same hanger & sold together). That lie cost her biz and she was even confronted by angry people, some whom had been customers and swore to not shop there again, over that crap, and she said a couple were downright threatening to her, insinuating she wouldn't have a store much longer. So it makes me think that a store wouldn't do well financially if they sold slutty clothes (unless they're focusing on a niche market, and online for their own physical protection).

Another was an expose on slutty Halloween costumes for kids but little girls didn't wear anything like what was being reported on (though some teens did), and a quick look at the Halloween section at the store also showed the media to be lying (though I'm sure the costumes they describe can be bought online or specialty shops, it's not like there's some epidemic of girls going out that way, at least not until they're teens).

I CAN find the clothing I'd agree is slutty, and I see the rare girl wearing it, sometimes even with makeup (much less rare as teens), but in my experience you have to go out of your way to find it, and when I stumble across such clothes (as very rarely happens) I feel surprised (and I recall seeing a Sex and the City game being sold in the children's game aisle once which surprised me, but next time I went it had been moved to a top shelf so little kids couldn't see it, let alone reach it).

So I'm curious if you define prostitot's clothing differently from I do or if you're simply seeing and remembering the exception and ignoring all the rest. So here are some clothes I found for sale by googling clothes for preschool girls:
http://www.target.com/c/baby-girls-clothing/-/N-5xtig

I got tired of sifting through all the other things the sites wanted to sell me, demanding I sign up just to look at the merchandise, redirect me (back to winter's clothes in one case!), etc, so I narrowed my search to JC Penny's girls:
http://www.jcpenney.com/jcp/xgn.aspx?deptid=77892&catid=77910

Walmart is pretty infamous for how people dress so I looked up Walmart girls and got this:
http://www.walmart.com/cp/girls-clothing/133202

But I've noticed they're all putting forth their nicer clothes rather than casual wear, and I've observed most girls aren't going to wear nice clothes like that while playing because they'd mess them up and even rip them too easy and clothes are too expensive for that. So I tried googling casual clothes for girls that show more of what I see them wear when out playing (especially in Summer where a lot of skin is shown), though this was the best I got (and doesn't match with what I see most wearing):
http://www.kohls.com/kohlsStore/girls_716/dresses_rompers/casual.j sp?pfx=pfx_google_roi&cid=aaggirlsclothing

I guess no site wants to put up the cheap, expendable clothes (which sell for a lot less). Oh well, I guess I'll have to describe them then: they tend to be shirts with pix of unicorns, cats (and Hello Kitty), puppies, or saying things like Princess on them and stock shorts and jeans and skirts that are functional and not intended to draw attention.

All in all, those don't look like prostitot clothes to me. Do they look that way to you?

If the clothes you see for sale in your area are radically different from the links I easily found, then I'm curious if you only know a small handful of girls (who are the exception to the rule but the ones you're around the most) or if you live in some New York City neighborhood, a place like Venice, California (where I saw the most clothes and girls dressed this way, though even then it was the exception rather than the rule, at least 10 years ago), or maybe some place like Miami.

I live in the DC area, and, yeah, I wouldn't put my kids in some of those clothes.

There's no reason for them to be in tight, revealing clothing.

Edited to add: 3 was probably an exaggeration, though. I've found that it starts getting dicey (for me) once you get out of the "Ks".
