Wasn't sure where to post this but how does one know which is your animal totem?

You have a few...or even several of them and they can change, just like you do, over time.

One tends to have some main ones that stick with them throughout their life and also ....secondary ones, i guess you could say, come in at different points in your life to nudge you, or wake you up to certain lessons you need to learn at that time.

So in a sense, totems are fluid.

I'll try to write more later (just stopping in for a few). I'm by no means an expert, but have picked things up along the way.

Read up on the totem meaning of the animal that has caught your eye and see if you can figure out it's message.

Thanks, T.

The one I love the most is the wolf. I couldn't have a true wolfy so I opted for Siberian Huskies instead due to the resemblance.

I like cats too but wolves are my first choice.

I've never been able to choose just one. I was dreaming about squirrels, four years ago, and we had chipmunks getting into the house - we saved some, and lost others to injuries from the dogs grabbing them.

I think that Bears might be one of my main totems. I felt like Skunk was another, relating to being more on the outside of things, than inside them. Either side can feel uncomfortable.

Horses captured my attention from late 2008, through May 2011.

I like wolves, too. I have a large dreamcatcher featuring one, and a blanket. They're very community-oriented, from what I can remember.

For a long while, I think another totem of mine was a deer.

I used to have dreams of Bears, including one in which they were breaking glass to get into my house.

My strongest totem, weasel:

My second strongest, snow leopard:

Combined those two explain everything for me up to near 95%. The remaining 5% is filled by other minor totems. Having snow leopard as a strong totem is kind of painful for me as well. Hence it's my second.

I have found out my animal totems from self-reflection, research on meaning, speaking with "spiritual masters" and overall seeing where I identify. I very much embody the energy of these two.

People too often from what I have observed;
confuse the animals they like with what is actually their animal totem.
Or they confuse their "spirit" animal with what they think is a totem animal.
They are not the same thing.
Your totem comes to teach you something not for you to like it.
Then once your lesson is learned,
it will leave and a new "teacher/totem" will come into your life.
Wolves, hummingbirds,
all the stereotypical totem animals that are ones that a majority of folks choose,
that folks like or love,
rarely are these their actual totems.
Admired. loved, even their "spirit" animal, or familiars, soul bonds, but not their totems.
A totem animal can be any animal, mammal, bird, insect, reptile, fish, amphibian, arachnid,
you name it.....
not just the popular ones like wolves, eagles, and so forth.
And you do not have to like it/them.
In fact it is more likely that your lessons to be learned
come from creatures you are not drawn too, and may even dislike.
You learn the most from those.
And again,
they will change as you evolve and learn.
Familiars and animal soul bonds are not your totems.
Pure and simple, a totem comes into your life to teach you something,
not for you to automatically like it or become buddies with it.
A totem animal/creature,
is not the same thing as your
"spirit" animal, familiar, daemon,
and so forth.

I don't think people confuse the animals they like with the ones that are their totems, or the ones that have meaning or lessons to give them. Like anything, there are positivies and negatives to everything. There is something to learn and some uncomfortable lessons, even from the ones they like and gravitate towards.

I happen to think there is a reason why certain animals are more popular with a large majority or groups of people, than other animals, but I'll talk about that some other time maybe.

"Familiars"and bonds that you find you have with certain animals can definitely be because they are a totem of yours.

Sorry, Lexx. We can agree to disagree.....yet, it seems we agree on certain points here either way.

Most people's inner wisdom is enough to guide them to where they need to be and to what animal needs to teach them something

Even the warm fuzzy or pretty ones have deep lessons to teach. So not to worry.

Perhaps I did not make myself clear.
I added to my previous post bits about our spirit animals.
A spirit animal, one(s) we are drawn to,
are in my observations,
rarely are our totem/teacher animals.
Oh yes,
our "Spirit" animal is very important!
But from what I have experienced and observed,
totem and spirit animals are two different things.
Sorry if my point of view based on decades of research, interviews, and observations,
offends.
Just sharing what I have witnessed.

PS.
One sure aspect (in my experiences/observations of course)
of an actual totem animal,
is that an actual totem chooses you.
And does so when you least expect it to happen.
You do not choose it.
It can be the odd out of place appearance of an actual living animal,
like looking out your front door whilst living in a city,
to find a wild turkey on your doorstep looking up at you....
or a tree frog sitting on the passenger seat in your car when the car has not been near any trees.....
or a wild dove mysteriously lands on your shoulder....
yes such and more I have experienced...odd visits by skunks, snakes, skinks, bats, the list goes on.........
or they can come in dreams and visions.
You do not choose them or the time they come into your lives.
They choose.

& yes, to what you edited and added on:

earlier i was going to write that in reality, the animal finds (or chooses us) not the other way around....

or maybe it's better said that we meet up at the perfect time. Neither choosing one or the other. It just is, and an opportunity to learn from.

Yes indeed!
Much is in the "timing".
My PS.
from above,(sorry I may have added it whilst you were posting)

They choose.
But yes,
we have to recognize them and they us.....
so yes, it is a rather mutual connection,
and timing does matter.

Oh about the dead sparrow,
yes,
even dying or dead animals can signify a totem has come into your life!
A person very close to me needed answers to some things and summoned a sign.
He found a frozen but still beautiful red Cardinal.
It looked peacefully asleep not dead.
Then in dreams it came and was alive in the dreams and spoke to him.

PS.
We kept the Cardinal's body in the freezer until Spring came, then put it outside.
Just seemed the right thing to do somehow.

I can see Wolf as being your "Spirit" animal.
I like wolves too but I know they are not my totems, nor my spirit animal.
I had 3/4 Wolf some years back as a real pet.
I can calm wolves too.
A wolf escaped in my area one time and no one could catch it.
It came to my back yard and I calmed it as my son called the dog catcher.
We sat there together just doing nothing, and he paced a bit but then sat again.
Yes I was scared but one should never run from a 100% wolf.
The dog catcher arrived and was like freaking out and wanting to tranquilize the wolf.
I told him no!
So he opened the door to the van,
and I had a "talk" with the full blooded wolf,
and he let me lead him to the van.
He was then taken back to the wolf rescue place some 40 miles away from where he had escaped a week before.

I worked with a Siberian Huskie and his owner when the animal was terminal ill.
It was an amazing experience.
Sad but beautiful.
The transition involved Spirit animals/creatures,
such as a Sasquatch and a Raven.
One of the neighbors called all excited,
saying,
"there was a Sasquatch in your back yard talking to "name of pet".
We said, yes there was.
Then later when she went to have him euthanized,
the vet said,
this is strange, but Sasquatch just popped into my mind".
My friend said,
of course,
he is helping "pet name" to cross over.

LOL!
My Spirit animal is extinct.
So were/are some of my totems.
In fact have had more extinct species represented than non extinct ones.

One of mine is definately the wolf as a spirit animal then. I'm 100% certain and not confusing the issue because I like the animal.
