One of mine is definately the wolf. I'm 100% certain and not confusing the issue because I like the animal.

Your Spirit animal for sure!
If you have always loved them and would not be you without that connection.
That would be your Spirit animal,
your soul's counterpart/mirror
in animal form.
Unlike a totem which comes when you need it and leaves when your lessons are learned.
Our Spirit animal is with us each through life and even many lifetimes. It may or may not be the same animal soul but will be one of that species/breed.
And like a totem animal,
A Spirit animal can be an extinct species.
The wolf does fit you, especially the Arctic wolf http://howlingforjustice.wordpress.com/2011/01/13/atka-the-arctic-wolf/

I think my totem animal (or rather: my messenger animal) is the crow.

I never had a special liking for them, though I did not dislike them either, but it occurred to me that, whenever I am either going wrong or getting stuck on my lifepath or when there are very significant things happening, crossroads whatever, the crow appears out of nowwhere, sometimes even waking me up from sleep.
The "creepiest" thing was, that when I had been resting on a hotelbed in Paris, and had come up slowly looking into the mirror opposite the window, I suddenly saw a crow in the mirror. I walked over to the window but of course did not see anything. But I HAVE seen a crow in the mirror, I am sure of it, no matter how unlikely that was.

So I definitely pay attention to the "crow`s call" now.

Another animal that is often around me, are cats. We seem to often "meet" outside at night. And often when a cat looks at me, I can see her eyes glow, I mean really glow like a spotlight fell onto them (well just the one cat, who is kind of "watching over me", patroling around my house everytime I am alone. lol).

Interestingly she listens to the name "Bast". Of course her real name is a different one, and she is shy, keeping her distance, but I´ve sometimes just whispered the name "Bast", even when seeing her through a window, and she turned her head abruptly round to me EVERYTIME.

Not sure if she is my animal totem though; as I said she keeps her distance, but at the same time "watches" me, just like I watch her I guess.

Most of my animal totems tend to be viscus-plasmates from interdimensional space... bah, go figure

I had 3/4 Wolf some years back as a real pet.
I can calm wolves too.
A wolf escaped in my area one time and no one could catch it.
It came to my back yard and I calmed it as my son called the dog catcher.
We sat there together just doing nothing, and he paced a bit but then sat again.
Yes I was scared but one should never run from a 100% wolf.
The dog catcher arrived and was like freaking out and wanting to tranquilize the wolf.
I told him no!
So he opened the door to the van,
and I had a "talk" with the full blooded wolf,
and he let me lead him to the van.
He was then taken back to the wolf rescue place some 40 miles away from where he had escaped a week before.

I worked with a Siberian Huskie and his owner when the animal was terminal ill.
It was an amazing experience.
Sad but beautiful.
The transition involved Spirit animals/creatures,
such as a Sasquatch and a Raven.
One of the neighbors called all excited,
saying,
"there was a Sasquatch in your back yard talking to "name of pet".
We said, yes there was.
Then later when she went to have him euthanized,
the vet said,
this is strange, but Sasquatch just popped into my mind".
My friend said,
of course,
he is helping "pet name" to cross over.

LOL!
My Spirit animal is extinct.
So were/are some of my totems.
In fact have had more extinct species represented than non extinct ones.

That's a super interesting story.

I have a similar one but with a dog.

I was around 12 years old and I went to walk my dog. At that time, there was a missing dog in the neighborhood, it was a quite big dog with long'ish hair (almost like a cross between a Labrador and a Golden Retriever).
While I was walking my dog I spot this other dog down in the street, but I ignored it... When I look again he is racing towards us.. Next thing I know, I am half standing half laying on the floor in front of my dog and with the other big one on top of me all angry and going crazy...

I was not scared, just worried in protecting my dog and it was my first instinct to throw myself between them.

Somehow I felt this dog would not harm me... And he didn't. He was just all the time growling and snarling, but I managed to calm him and push him away and keep him away from my dog.

I looked literally like a cross lol... both arms open apart, one hand holding my dog's leash and the other pushing and holding the other dog on his chest.

I must add I am a small girl, even more at 12 years old, so the dog was bigger than me.

This never made me be afraid of dogs in anyway, I am always the first to go and pat/play a/with a stranger dog.

I always felt I have some kind of connection with animals, specially my dog, but now I share this special connection with one of my cats too and not to mention my dreams with lions...

Thanks for clarifying the difference between totems and spirit animals, Lexx.

It makes more sense now.

I found this website a month or so ago when I had a vivid dream of an animal. The meaning fit in perfectly with my life at the time. It kind of blew me away.

The interpretations are great and there is a lot of awesome artwork there too.

Enjoy

I have always felt a strong connection to wolves. Not through any divination or anything, purely through the existence of them and I.
When I see a photograph of one it's as if we see into each other souls - god knows what would happen if I actually met one.

My name means "Wolf Shield." I do seem to emanate a wolf energy about me. Also the turtle. And I'm a duck whisperer of sorts. Not sure which are my totems.

Whoops, I guess I didn't know the difference either.

Weasel and Snow Leopard are my spirit animals, not totem. Sorry about that :P.

People use different words, but are often talking about the same thing.

For instance, one might say: " People with ________ as a totem, or ________ medicine,...(meaning here)."

I understand what Lex means by spirit animal too and the difference than what is known as the more common and basic meaning of the word totem.

I've heard the term "animal helper" and "animal guide" used too.

when i first moved to new mexico i had a totem or spirit animal reading (i dont recall what the cards were named) come to think of it i think they were called power animal cards .i would say it was about a thirty card deck and i pulled the hummingbird.i always wondered about that .im not small or fast or bird like at all id like to get my hands on a deck of those cards again. Question ? Does any one know what the creatures who tend to follow you are called ? I believe they may be deceased loved ones

A band of merry ducks go to my door step every day each spring and summer for delicious bread, but I haven't seen them yet this year.

If I see them across the parking lot, I call at them, "Here ducky ducky ducky," and they waddle super fast quacking their way to my door, but usually they are there waiting on me each morning and/or evening.

lol Randall your ducks sound more like pets to me , how sweet. ( crickets like my company ive had two pet crickets they feed them s-elfs but enjoy company. Cricky #1 was missing a hind leg,and slowly learned how to chirp for us ) Back to the ducks.....One of my earliest memories is feeding ducks cheerios on lake erie at a family cottage . I can still feel the tempature of the air mixing with the water and the feel of the color orange surrounding us at dusk.laughter rang in the air... back to the topic of totem animals ...this thread inspired my next painting in my Power Animals series .(this thread and that pic of the pandas with rainbows shooting out of their mouths, in H&H ) I was up till 4am drawing celtic knot animal heads surrounding a skeletal fish head . It felt great to be awake at those hours being creative again.

I Thank You All for Your Inspiration! xoxoxo

There's a baby dragonfly in my room right now. I tried to catch it to let it out but right now it's chilling way up high near the ceiling.

Totem anyone?

I must find out what Dragonfly means now. Maybe I'll capture a pic on my phone before I let it outside...which i am determined to do before I fall asleep. It also caught my dog's eye. She's staring at it right now. I'd never seen a baby one before.

DRAGONFLY

Illusion, the Power of Light

Dragonfly is the power of light.
The dragonfly inhabits two realms: air and water
and the influence of both these elements will be felt by Dragonfly people.
They will be emotional and passionate
during their early years (the influence of water)
and more balanced with greater mental clarity
and control in as they mature (the influence of air).

Dragonfly is the essence of the winds of change,
the messages of wisdom and enlightenment; and the communication from the elemental world.
Dragonfly medicine beckons you to seek out the parts of your habits which need changing.
Call on Dragonfly to guide you through the mists of illusion to the pathway of transformation.
The number 2 is important to Dragonfly,
so think in terms of two year periods when you begin a change.
Dragonfly brings the light and color of transformation into your life.

The power of Dragonfly lies in its ability to see around things by looking from different angles. Using its ability to transform colors and lights by reflecting and refracting them, Dragonfly shows us that life, like light, can bend, shift, and adapt in various ways, making life's appearance never be what it appears to be. Dragonfly's magic shows us to see through life's illusions and find our true vision. It calls us to transform within our lives and reminds us to feel deeply so we will have the compassion necessary to help ourselves and others.

I have a dragonfly tattoo. The same day I got the tattoo one flew in a tiny hole through my fly wire window and landed on my keyboard. I still can't believe that happened. The reason I got the tattoo was because of my childhood (long story.)
