The witch hunt is over for Lance and I for one, am sad he chose to quit . It leaves him stripped of 7 of his Tour De France titles After the nightmare of cancer and accusations over the past dozen years, it is understandable.

quote:
In the end, Lance Armstrong quit. And no matter how fiercely he writes his statements or fires rockets on Twitter or demands we continue to buy into the fantasy that in a world of doping cyclists he alone was clean and rode faster and stronger, he still quit on Thursday night.

Do you believe he is innocent or guilty of doping?

Thanks for replying AD

He had been tested over 500 times for drugs and always came back clean. How would that be possable if he was guilty?

I still don't understand why he has chosen to back down after so many years of fighting. Since he has passed every drug test that has ever been administered to him, wouldn't the onus be on the accusing party?

And the USADA doesn't have the legal authority to strip TdF titles. The UCI hasn't opined yet. If TdF titles are being stripped, then how about the Sydney Olympics Bronze time trial medal? And the World Championship he won in Oslo? And the US National Championships? How about all the European classics that he has won? Why only the TdF?

So many questions need to be answered.

If he did dope, it would have been for his 7th title only. This is not the way to treat a hero.

In the 1970s and 1980s, nearly every athlete doped. We do not see their records being stripped.

Lance does not deserve this.

I agree. So many (Like YTA noted) and I add Roger Clemens go free.

They have hounded him since 1999

AD, sounds like a plan!

I also wondered if his cancer returned and he wanted to be free of the charges to face the future.

I was pleased to read this article:

Sponsors stand by Armstrong, despite doping accusations:

Lance Armstrong could lose millions in winnings and endorsements fees if he is stripped of his racing titles, but so far his major sponsors say they have no intention of dropping Armstrong, largely because of his work with the Livestrong Foundation.

The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency today banned Armstrong from the sport for his alleged use of illegal performance enhancing drugs and said it expects cycling's governing body, the International Cycling Union, to strip Armstrong of his titles. USADA said they could require Armstrong to return millions of dollars in cash prizes that he has won since 1998.

The officials who are hounding him would not complete even twenty miles of the Tour De France without collapsing from cardiac failure.
Even if they doped to the max

LANCE anagram is CLEAN

I see the possibility of a bigger game here.

Lance is a genuine American Hero. The first step in breaking a Nation is to destroy the role models. I wonder if the shadow establishment will attack Carl Lewis next?

Seems (to me) the media jumped the gun a bit with the news headlines saying USDA will strip Lance when they are not the governing body of cycling.

quote:
The sport’s governing body said it expects USADA to submit documents “to the parties concerned,” as the case threatens to wipe a cycling icon almost out of the record books.

“The UCI recognizes that USADA is reported as saying that it will strip Mr. Armstrong of all results from 1998 onwards in addition to imposing a lifetime ban from participating in any sport which recognizes the World Anti-Doping Code,” the Switzerland-based organization said in a statement.

“As USADA has claimed jurisdiction in the case the UCI expects that it will issue a reasoned decision” explaining the action taken, the UCI said, adding that legal procedures obliged USADA to fulfill this demand in cases “where no hearing occurs.”

Armstrong has chosen not to pursue an arbitration hearing where he could have fought charges brought by U.S. anti-doping officials that his teams doped when he won the Tour from 1999-2005.

Totally agree with IQ.

My partner posted this in response to another astrology-related discussion:

Regarding Lance Armstrong ... Speaking as a Virgo, about another, the problem for us Earth signs, particularly Virgos and Capricorns (in my experience), is that we have to do ten times as much as everyone else in order to be considered half as worthy. Fortunately our innate work ethic means this isn't actually that hard but, less fortunately, because we tend to go through life with quiet, dogged determination, heads down, simply 'getting on with it', no one actually notices just how hard we work and treats us with suspicion when our well deserved success finally materialises because there was no tangible evidence of what we were doing while we were doing it. Other signs I could name, but won't, can do very little of any real substance but make an incredible amount of noise, propelling themselves through life on a jet-blast of their own hot air and shameless self promotion and because their pompous displays of ass-kissing and posturing are so palpable it appears obvious that 'something' is happening, therefore, it is accepted it when these people achieve success, even though they actually did very little to genuinely earn it. What I'm trying to say about Lance Armstrong is that he did it the Virgo way, the quiet way, which is why there has been such relentless suspicion. Now, like any logically-minded Virgo, he has decided that enough is enough. He's wasted enough of his life fighting this nonsense (and if anyone truly understands how precious and 'not-to-be-wasted' life is, Lance Armstrong does), so he's walked away. If the powers-that-be want to take that as admission of guilt then more fool them. Lance Armstrong is enlightened enough not to waste his life away arguing over the presence, or otherwise, of some marks in a history book. He knows what he achieved and everyone who's capable of seeing past the bullsh*t does too. That's all that matters in the end.

i suspect that he just decided that fighting was costing him too much. stress has a way of encouraging cancer...

stripped or not, he will be remembered as having won those 7 TdFs and who knows? maybe he has decided to leave it in god's hands and forgive his persecutors. it has been known to stimulate miracles in many, many litigations that seemed lost to the defender.

of course malicious folk will see it as an admission of guilt but lance knows whether he is guilty or innocent. and he knows what he achieved, too.

Armstrong report expected this week.

In August, USADA ordered the results from 14 years of Armstrong's career erased, including his seven Tour de France titles, and banned him from cycling for life because of the doping case against him.

It is planning within days to send a report detailing its "reasoned decision" to the International Cycling Union, the sport's governing body.

The document is widely anticipated because USADA is expected to include detailed evidence — including witness names and specific allegations — that USADA said it had when it charged Armstrong with performance-enhancing drug use while winning the Tour every year from 1999-2005.

Cycling authorities who backed Armstrong's legal fight to block the case have said they want to see the material before deciding whether to appeal the American agency's sanctions to the world Court of Arbitration for Sport.

In question-and-answer form, here's a look at where things stand:

___

Q: WHAT EVIDENCE WILL BE IN THE REPORT?

A: Armstrong strongly denies doping, but USADA officials have said their report will back up the move to sanction one of the most popular athletes in America.

USADA has said it had 10 former teammates ready to testify against Armstrong before he chose not to take his case to an arbitration hearing. The list likely includes previous Armstrong accusers Floyd Landis and Tyler Hamilton. The sport will be watching closely to learn who else was willing to testify.

Exactly how detailed the evidence will be is unknown. One complicating factor: Former U.S. Postal Service team director Johan Bruyneel also has been charged with participating in the alleged doping conspiracy and has elected to take his case to arbitration. A USADA spokeswoman has declined to say if the Bruyneel case includes the same witnesses and if the pending hearing limits what can be included in the Armstrong report.

While Hincapie admits he did, he isn`t pointing a finger specifically at Armstrong

Armstrong lieutenant Hincapie admits to doping
PARIS (Reuters) - George Hincapie, one of Lance Armstrong's former team mates and closest allies, has admitted to using performance-enhancing drugs.

The 39-year-old American, who rode alongside Armstrong in each of his seven Tour de France wins, released a statement on Wednesday confessing that he cheated.

"Because of my love for the sport, the contributions I feel I have made to it, and the amount the sport of cycling has given to me over the years, it is extremely difficult today to acknowledge that during a part of my career I used banned substances," he said.

"Early in my professional career, it became clear to me that, given the widespread use of performance enhancing drugs by cyclists at the top of the profession, it was not possible to compete at the highest level without them."
