Usually I regard anything "released" by Fox News not worth reading the same for the Post. I grew up during the boom of technology, I recall using those colorful MAC desktops in elementary school, the development of myspace and opening my first fb account when I was just hitting 18, so I kind of feel that this article is a bit overly dramatic and very one sided. Do I think media outlets such as Fb, twitter and youtube fuels the ego of some individuals? yes. Sure there are young adults that advertise more of the shallow portion of their lives to feel superior to there peers but there is also a portion of adults from the age range of 30+ that do the exact same thing. I can't imagine any young teens have anything to advertise aside from a new purchase they or their parents made or a party they attended that they feel need to voice.

The influence of video games or media such as music or film on young children and adolescents is a matter of parents not properly restricting these things from their children. Even if children somehow do get their hands on such material from their peers, parents at home should be able to teach their children its not age appropriate for them. Yet there are parents that buy said "destructive" products as a means to regulate their child's behavior yet complain when they want more.

In regards to television shows on MTV displaying other young people with similar lives fueling this narcissism well "The Real World" was created back in 1992, this reality show existed well before a number of the "narcissistic" generation even entered kindergarten or were born. While I am not necessarily a fan of these types of shows because of the negative stereotypes they seem to encourage this seed was planted along time ago.

In response to the access of psychological drugs of the 21st century, this generation didn't create the drugs or alcohol of the 21st century the same goes for the technology and the lack of regulation of these stimulants. There has been a decrease in the number of teenage pregnancies, actually at a all time low. I remember reading " there were less teenage mothers in 2010 than any year since 1946"

This article doesn't cover the number of young adults that actually have a marketable talent or skill that have used fb or youtube to start their careers or make money. Example. youtube beauty gurus that have started their careers as a result of public exposure on a large scale one makeup guru comes to mind "Michelle Phan" built a career using her fb and youtube connections. Or the number of educational benefits of technology. Yes the test scores may have dropped but the way students are tested both the material and the number of standardized tests has changed. While the structure of the educational system hasn't changed much and doesn't accommodate for other students that may have a learning disability without their parents pushing out some extra money to handle whatever learning disability their children may have.

During my parents generation the main concerns for college acceptance was the SAT's, a overall good Hs. transcript, a college essay and a few well written recommendations. Now well from my personal experience in HS not only did we have to cover the basics listed above but also SAT II's, ACT, a supplementary essays, work experience/volunteer experience, a number of extracurricular activities, and a beyond average hs course load which for myself and peers included taking college course while in high school. There is a different kind of pressure that is applied to young adults and children today so yes maybe this is not fueled by the need to be famous or narcissism but to escape. Sort of a technological rabbit hole.

college is a bunch of crap these days imo.. they have made it to where its not worth going in the first place ... why should i jump through so many hoops just to get in,only to wind up 100,00 + in debt and with the economy the way it is theres a good possibility that i wouldnt be able to find a job anyway. alot of people my age are getting out of college with tons of debt and are unable to find jobs.

That's a stereotype. I know a lot of people believe it but I also believe there's a lot of people who don't. People don't care if you've been to college as long as you're making your way in the world with a skill you've taken the time to craft. I respect the time and hard work that goes into that. There are a lot of idiots who went to college and a lot of genius people who didn't, such as Steve Jobs (and by "went to college" I mean graduated, etc.)

I never said they were nobodies :O What I mean by be a nothing I mean you would have wasted your time. (Eh, Didn't seem like it but that's what I meant) My grandpa was a construction worker for years before his health got bad. He's not a nobody. Even people who go to college can be nobodies. .-.

i think that attitude is more common than not.. like me, people look down on me all the time because i got my ged instead of a hs diploma...never mind the fact that i had to do it because there was alot of crazy stuff going on in my life at the time, i'm still a lazy idiotic dropout to them. even though i made an almost perfect score on the test without studying, people still think they are superior to me, which is funny because most of them are idiots.

Dad will buy children a puppy if they can get 1 million likes on facebook.

That is so 3D I think i'll puke now. What kind of culture is this?

news.com.au

After much persistence, their father Ryan Cordell agreed that if they could get 1 million likes on Facebook, they would be allowed to get a pet.

Of course Mr Cordell probably thought this was a stellar plan because 1 million Facebook likes was totally out of reach. Right?

But the Boston girls, inspired by other kids’ social media campaigns, set to work, setting up the Facebook page "Twogirlsandapuppy" on Wednesday (16/01/13) with the callout: "Hi, We're two sisters and we desperately want a puppy. We have three little brothers, too. Yes, we have five kids in our family.
"We lost our dog several months ago to cancer. We really want another one but our parents are reluctant.
"Then the other day we saw a brother and sister on facebook post a picture saying that their dad would let them get a dog if they get a ton of likes. We got our dad to agree to it!

"He said if we get 1 million likes we get a new puppy. He doesn't think we can do it."

Well, they did do it - in just one day.

"Our profile picture just hit 1,000,000. Mom and Dad are officially stunned. Will have five ecstatic kids in the morning" the girls' mother Evie posted late on Wednesday night.

And dad is staying true to his word. The girls will be with puppy soon, and it will be "a rescue either from a local shelter or a local rescue organisation."

Most people would think 'aww' and how 'sweet'.. but I just don't and I can't.

....what in the world?

I mean....at least a family-less dog from a shelter gets saved, but to go to that kind of extent?

Bonkers!

He shouldve saved one because it's the right thing to do, not made some sort of contest out of it.

This couldve been an opportunity to learn somethings valuable, but he took it to a weird, wasted level.

Now THIS...I can't find a single good thing to say about:
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/world/1m-facebook-users-norwegian-man-laid-article -1.1243578

quote:
A Norwegian man may be about to get lucky – all thanks to Facebook.

Petter Kverneng persuaded his high school crush, Cathrine Johansen, to have sex with him if he got 1 million likes on Facebook, and social media users immediately rushed to his aid.

The 20-year-old’s salacious stunt, which reportedly started as a prank, hit the million mark just hours after he posted a photo begging for likes, Gawker reported.

Though it began as a joke, Kverneng told Norway’s Nettavisen that he and his gal pal are going to “keep what (they) promised.”

He only hopes Cathrine’s parents aren’t Facebook users too
