In an odd way, this has turned into an opportunity for them.They're not liable at all as it's been shown to have been an electrical fire from the shoddy wiring in the off-code downstairs rental, the donations (especially physical) have been almost overwhelming, and they now have almost enough money for first/last month's rent and deposit from the fund that I set up ($3000 may seem like more than enough, but you'd be lucky to get even a one bedroom apartment in a run-to-your-car-so -you-don't-get-mugged area in the DC/Metro for $1000/mo...and, if you could find it, chances are it would be because it's subsidized). They seem quite hopeful  ------------------
