Randall, et al - I don't know how kosher this is, so I won't be offended if you delete this, but my sister and her family just lost everything in a fire this morning.

They literally only have the clothes on their backs (PJs, as this happened at around 7am).

It looks like it was an electrical fire.
Their downstairs neighbors had unsecured ammo that started going off, so the firefighters could only do so much.
There's nothing left.

I've set up a GoFundMe site.
It allows for anonymous donations.
http://www.gofundme.com/1vtnm4

I know things are tight all around, but anything that anyone can spare would be used and appreciated, so matter how small. It all adds up.

Even good thoughts and prayers

I`m so sorry to hear this. Thank God they are safe and unharmed. Did the snake die?
I will do the little I can !

I am glad they are at least physically OK.
May they get all the help they need to recover from this awful ordeal.{{{ }}}

Thank you juni, Randall, char, and Lexx

Juni - They all made it out OK (the snake's actually their friend's - this was just the most recent picture of all of them that I could quickly grab off of Facebook). They ran out as soon as they realized there was a fire - the baby was only in a diaper (he had been cosleeping).

Their dogs are /probably/ OK.
They tried to go back in to get them, but the fire got very intense very quickly.
At least one got out, though, and the firefighters have said that they haven't yet found any animal remains on the top floor.
Their roommates' dog appears to have died in the fire.

Here`s to praying the dogs got out or at least safe

I don`t like snakes but that would have been awful anyhow.

Update: My dad and Uncle are going to give them most of the furniture they'll need from my paternal Grandmother's estate

(You may remember that I posted a few weeks ago that she passed.)

The GoFundMe site's already raised $1,270 (though I included my "offline" donation in the total).

We're headed down to my Mom's in a bit to give them some cash for work clothes.
Donations have been pouring in, but they also need some work outfits.

Thank you everyone for your kind words and thoughts.

I just got off the phone with my Mom, and she told me that it got so hot that their wood stove melted.
That's nuts.
I didn't even know that that could happen.

We're going to go down tomorrow with the donations we've collected so far (they had a ton of visitors today).

Sorry to hear of this and hope they bounce back as quickly as possible.

Just out of curiosity, did they have insurance? If so, how long until they're likely to get a settlement out of it? (It just suddenly makes me wonder how long until our insurance kicked in...and didn't try to find a loophole to get out of paying.)

They didn't

They were kind of really just getting on their feet after a bit of a wild child past, so they're completely uninsured.

We just found out that one of their dogs that we thought had escaped did not

It's funny - she's a Virgo Sun, Scorp Moon, Aqua Asc and I'm a Pisces Sun, Aqua Moon, Scorp Asc.

We're polar opposites in so many ways (as you might imagine from our "big three" placements) but also oddly alike (our own Mom can't always tell us apart on the phone).

teasel - Thank you

Randall - Thank you for bumping this

mirage - Friends, family, and quite a few anonymous donors have already given nearly $3000 to this fundraising effort. The Red Cross also gave each family cards to use for immediate needs. On top of that, my Mom's downstairs is filled to the brim with donations. They'll be able to use about half of it, but they're sorting through everything and will re-donate anything that doesn't fit.
Friends of both affected families are also organizing a fundraiser/donation drop off event

They're not quite sure where they're going to move yet - they're debating whether they'll stay close to both of their Mothers; move up to where I am (more and better paying jobs); or pull up stakes and head to another, lower cost city (they have friends trying to convince them to head for coastal Delaware and Pittsburg).

Thank you to everyone for all your thoughts and prayers.

And one last thing: Their downstairs neighbor/roommates German Shepherd (who unfortunately died - his people were travelling and the only egress was blocked by fire) is being remembered as a hero. His barking is what first woke up my sister so she could see the fire - and the back of the couch that she and her boys had fallen asleep on was already in flames.

This story got a few of the details wrong, but that happens:
http://news.fredericksburg.com/newsdesk/2013/01/20/fire-engulfs-stafford-county-home/

For instance, it was much more of an ordeal to get the fire department to come out.
They had to call back multiple times and were apparently even asked, "Are you sure this isn't a fire you can't put out yourself?" O_o

sheesh!! OMG! Can-you-believe-THAT??

Yeah... so, if it's 'not happening' THERE, then how can it be possibly really 'happening'...?

Were they perhaps in the middle of their cozy-time? 'Sunday Brunching'?? Was their bacon not quite 'crisp' enough for them yet??

O,'whatabotheration'!! How uber-inconvenient these 'people' and their 'needs' are! Wha??? Huh? They gotta go do their JOBS????

un-real!!-- Hey, cheers for that Hero Dog!! YAY!
