Copyrights expire and the many musicians whose music has been pilfered and uploaded onti YouTube can tell you how much good a common law copyright has done them when trying to collect royalties. But that was why I stopped in the professional sense, many years ago now. I haven't got a computer nor much time lately for making the effort. But having played something ever since the age of three, its not important so much to be heard a to just enjoy. I have music on YouTube (put up by others) for which i expect no royalties but its fun to check on the comments from time to time. I am happy to have been in place@the right time to make a difference and a living but have no "ambition" ...for now.I do enjoy playing around with music withthe kids...my older grandson is composing songs on his tablet and plays a wicked set of steel drums too! If you can prove the date you wrote it (mail it to yourself, for instance, and don't open it), you will have no trouble finding a lawyer to sue. Or pay the small fee and submit it to the Copyright office yourself. IP: Logged |

It was copyrighted...as I said, copyrights need renewing or they run out. Ask the Rolling Stones and their team of lawyers...but it doesn't matter enough to go thru the rigmarole and expense. I'm okay with it being out there. There are others involved who can't be bothered either... Anything I may do in future, I will go thru the process again. Thanks for the suggestions tho.IP: Logged |

How long does a copyright last? The term of copyright for a particular work depends on several factors, including whether it has been published, and, if so, the date of first publication. As a general rule, for works created after January 1, 1978, copyright protection lasts for the life of the author plus an additional 70 years. For an anonymous work, a pseudonymous work, or a work made for hire, the copyright endures for a term of 95 years from the year of its first publication or a term of 120 years from the year of its creation, whichever expires first. For works first published prior to 1978, the term will vary depending on several factors. To determine the length of copyright protection for a particular work, consult chapter 3 of the Copyright Act (title 17 of the United States Code). More information on the term of copyright can be found in Circular 15a, Duration of Copyright, and Circular 1, Copyright Basics. Do I have to renew my copyright? No. Works created on or after January 1, 1978, are not subject to renewal registration. As to works published or registered prior to January 1, 1978, renewal registration is optional after 28 years but does provide certain legal advantages. For information on how to file a renewal application as well as the legal benefit for doing so, see Circular 15, Renewal of Copyright, and Circular 15a, Duration of Copyright. http://www.copyright.gov/help/faq/faq-duration.html IP: Logged |

Well thanks for that, Randall, and for being a goat about it too! I checked - my copyright is British not American - even so, you are right and my silly former partner wrong. Much obliged, though now I have to do a lot more homework and as far as Iknow it won't affect the YouTube situation... its still okay that its out there but there are other aspects this changes, quite a lot. Many thx! Weren't there some kind of changes going on lately with IP law?Intellectual Property, that is. Like within the last year or two? Maybe that's what was referred to. IP: Logged |
