Now, I am afraid to go pick collards

It was small and dull grey. I think that is a rat snake and not poisonous.

I saw it out of the side of my eyes. It was hiding in one of my aloe plants. It looked like it had a small head. That is key to non poisonous.

Just shake them with a stick first and make big stomps on the ground. They want to avoid humans. Besides, your garden is giving a home and shade to several creatures, including a few snakes. It's not a bad thing. Snakes have their role, too.

Thanks about the stick and I always try to make noise, Randall. I was thinking of the great shade my garden has--Eeek. I have huge collard greens that would perfect for a resting place lol

Snakes get rid of pests.

The small head probably points to harmless.

can you keep guinea fowl where you are?

Snake containment. Some people who live in areas where snakes are common recount how their guineas will spot and find snakes so they can kill them before they cause any harm. Guineas themselves will often kill snakes.

For Reals, Ami.

I had a little racer I named Parnelli.

It was fine.

Don't know what Guineas do, but chickens peck your garden to bits.

Messy porch, too.

I never heard of guineas. Are they guinea pigs? I did not look at the link, yet.

Get this. I let my dog out in the middle of the night and there was a baby raccoon in my fenced in pen.

Well, I let my dog out on a lease because this happened before and so I could pull her back.

The baby was so sweet. It's little face was hiding in the bushes, scared.

It looked like my dog's face--A Yorkie. My dog kind of looks like a rat

I was looking out my patio door one night; at my kitty cat's food, and lo and behold I came face to face with one of the little masked bandits!

It squealed.

They can be really mean.

Guinea Hens are fowl.

guinea hens are in the fowl family like chickens. They also eat bugs and tic's

Thankful we don't have poisonous snakes up here. Just the regular, harmless little garden snakes. I wish they ate hobo spiders, though.

Garden snakes love my squash plants. They freak me out when I see them out there. I've never seen a bigger snake in the garden, but Dad has seen them in the woods - one crawled across the trail when he was walking his dog, years ago. *shiver*

Raccoons kill small cats and kittens by the way.
Sadly I learned this fact by experience.
They also are a too common carrier of rabies.

Ami
Small head on a snake does not always mean safe.(ie; Coral snakes; small head)
The "pits" or lack of them is a better indicator of the difference betwixt vipers and common garter type or rat snakes.
This link might help you out. http://ufwildlife.ifas.ufl.edu/venomous_snake_identification.shtml

We sure have 3 nasty ones here. http://allaboutreptiles.tripod.com/reptiles/id4.html

Ugh
Spiders.

I think I hate the new invasive species of giant aphid from China worse.
Disgusting LARGE biting stinkbugs invade homes by the thousands around here.
Ugh.
They get into everything! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_marmorated_stink_bug

Very nasty smelling biting pest.
And unlike spiders;
these monsters also fly.

I just bought more snake repellent.

Randall, it is a very spiritual experience to have a garden. One feels close to the earth, God and nature. There is nothing quite as wonderful as a garden imo

Sorry, Randall.

The spiders get to me. Every year, I wonder why I'm out there dealing with them again.

Ha ha. I could deal with the spiders if they were just normal effing spiders. But NOOooo. Here in the Pacific Northwest (and in the South as well, apparently) we have spiders whose venom can give the results of something that looks like a horror movie. Yay.

Close relatives to the brown recluse. I hate those little b#stards. Sorry, Mother Nature. I just can't hang with the hobo spiders.

But yeah, I'm thankful that we don't have seriously poisonous snakes up here. On the other side of the mountains they have rattlesnakes, but at least you can usually hear them, or they can hear you...so avoidance is possible at least.

I kind of feel badly for the hobo spiders, because they're not aggressive at all. But I can't risk my little guy picking up a rock and being bit by one. :/

I did see a coyote in our back yard a few months ago, though. That was a bit odd, but not unheard of.
