Does anyone know how much money each citizen could have gotten if all the bailout money was divided up amongst us instead? I think i read about this figure somewhere but cant find it and I'm curious. Any idea?

I believe it's $750 billion now. Just found this from WikiAnswers though:

QUESTION:
If the proposed bailout cost of 7 hundred billion dollars were divided among the entire population of the US how much would that be for each person?
[In: 2008 Federal Bailout (link)]

ANSWER:
700B / 300M Population = $2300 a person. WRONG! you forgot a few zeros; it is actually $2.333 Million per person (every man, woman and child)!

____________

another answer:

If $700,000,000,000 were divided between every single man, woman, and child on the planet, that would be roughly $70,000 to everyone. If it were divided amongst US citizens alone, it would be something like $300,000 to every man, woman, and child, roughly. Instead they're going to do what they always do and give it to the richest %5 and the people who need it are going to get zilch.

no, its actually the first i believe. a billion is a thousand million. 300 into 700 is 2.5 and when you put the zeros in place it is 2.5 thousand. i was going to say 3000.

700,000,000,000/300,000,000 so if you drop 8 zeros off each one it boils down to 7000/3...equals 2500.

really wouldn't go very far would it? i mean it would pay off my car but that is nearly done already, and then i'd be back to square one with a new pair of shoes!!

if 700 billion were divided by 6 billion (app population of the world) it would be about $100 each and spare change

Thanks kat.

This is interesting...and even moreso, the replies: http://www.nodebtplan.net/2009/04/13/calculating-the-per-person-cost-of-the-bailout/

i remember getting one of those emails awhile back where it looked like about 300K, enough for most people to pay off their houses, and so on. of course it was wrong and of course a lot of people would probably end up worse off when the money was gone than when they started, as so often happens to lottery winners and other "victims" of huge windfalls!

These bail outs strike me as a very bad idea. But better to give it to people to waste than give it to proven failures for their golden parachutes as they declare bankruptcy and/or as they continue to export jobs and the like.

It's the same on a large scale as it is on a small scale. Ie, government bailouts and social welfare programs. They amount to the same in the long run. They put a bandaid on a hemorrhage. Doesn't really fix the problem and, without access to real help, keeps the 'victims' dependant on the government until they finally bleed out.

there are some cases where bailouts make sense. but the way you do it makes all the difference. last night i happened on an infomercial/charity appeal re kids in africa, i don't remember which part. as i watched it, and it was a drive for contributions, i was VERY moved. film of babies and toddlers literally expiring from starvation on the screen. it was heartbreaking.

as it turned out the "starving" pictures were from ten years ago! these missionaries have been feeding these people for the last 10 years, and it's true they no longer are starving to death!!

BUT, big BUT! they are also still standing in line to be fed. you have to wonder, why aren't these people importing water so the natives can grow some food of their own? once the crisis is over you would think it would make much more sense.

and secondly it is impossible to watch a drive like this, some obscure missionary on camera choking up about these kids, and wonder - is this guy genuine? if i sent some money would it actually get to the people i'm seeing on screen?

all of which is very much a parallel to our businesses and banks who now appear to be getting strung out on bailout money...even if none of them are actually starving; isn't it time we used the money to make it possible for them to stand on their own feet again? or for people themselves to stand on their own feet instead of standing in line waiting for credit to be doled out again?
