Tea partiers turn on GOP leadership

While the energy of the anti-tax and anti-Big Government tea party movement may yet haunt Democrats in 2010, the first order of business appears to be remaking the Republican Party.

Whether it’s the loose confederation of Washington-oriented groups that have played an organizational role or the state-level activists who are channeling grass-roots anger into action back home, tea party forces are confronting the Republican establishment by backing insurgent conservatives and generating their own candidates — even if it means taking on GOP incumbents.

“We will be a headache for anyone who believes the Constitution of the United States … isn’t to be protected,” said Dick Armey, chairman of the anti-tax and limited government advocacy group FreedomWorks, which helped plan and promote the tea parties, town hall protests and the September ‘Taxpayer March’ in Washington. “If you can’t take it seriously, we will look for places of other employment for you.”

“We’re not a partisan organization, and I think many Republicans are disappointed we are not,” added Armey, a former GOP congressman.

In Florida, where the national party has signaled its preference for centrist Gov. Charlie Crist in the GOP Senate primary, tea party activists are lining up behind former state House Speaker Marco Rubio in reaction to Crist’s public backing for President Barack Obama’s stimulus package.

“We were very disappointed with Gov. Charlie Crist when he supported the stimulus, the bailout, and he appeared publicly with President Obama,” said Everett Wilkinson, a South Florida-based organizer for Tea Party Patriots. “The opposition comes from Crist’s support for the largest spending plan ever and the environmental policies he’s pushing on the American people.”

Rubio has already made appearances at Florida tea parties, and protesters have been seen waving signs declaring, “Anybody but Charlie Crist.” He also has Armey’s endorsement, and Armey headlined a Dallas fundraiser for him several weeks ago.

Wilkinson said that the tax status of his Florida-based group limits what it can do to assist Rubio in the August 2010 primary. But he said the organization would launch an aggressive get-out-the-vote operation and issue a report card grading each candidate appearing on the ballot.

Tea party activists are also lining up behind challengers to GOP establishment-backed Senate candidates in Colorado and Connecticut. In California, former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina — like Crist, another National Republican Senatorial Committee-favored Senate contender — is the target of tea party animus in her primary against conservative state Assemblyman Chuck DeVore.

“My impression is that the support among tea partyers for DeVore is high,” said Mark Meckler, a California-based organizer for Tea Party Patriots. “I hear nothing but praise for the guy.”

Tea party organizers say their resistance to Republican Party-backed primary candidates has much to do with what they perceive as the GOP’s stubborn insistence on embracing candidates who don’t abide by a small government, anti-tax conservative philosophy.

“It’s an outgrowth of the frustration people have had with the Republican Party,” said Andrew Moylan, director of governmental affairs for the National Taxpayers Union, another group that has played a large role in organizing the tea party movement. “I think a lot of people have been angry at Republicans for betraying our trust.”

“I think the GOP establishment has ignored their constituents and the feelings of their constituents for years,” added Meckler.

It’s an unusual predicament for the Republican Party, since the conservative-oriented issues that animate Tea Party activists once seemed destined to make the movement a valuable auxiliary to the Republican Party.

While there’s little evidence of tea party activist support for Democratic candidates, the specific notion of electing a GOP majority hasn’t ranked high on their agenda either.

At the recent “Defending the American Dream Summit,” a conservative event held in Arlington, Va., a breakout session featuring tea party organizers saw panelists peppered with questions ranging from how to start up political action committees and 501(c)(3) organizations to whether it was necessary to hire lawyers.

“Nothing is going to change unless we can get politicians elected who can implement fiscally conservative policies,” Teri Adams of the Philadelphia-based Independence Hall Tea Party Association, which will be launching a political arm, told those in attendance.

In a handful of states, tea party activists have zeroed in on House Republican incumbents and have launched primary challenges in protest of their past support for the controversial Wall Street bank bailout.

One of those activists, Canyon Clowdus, an Army veteran who is taking on third-term conservative Rep. Mike Conaway (R-Texas), has blasted the incumbent for making “a horrible mistake” in voting for Troubled Asset Relief Program.

“He has put a financial burden on my four children that will amount to hundreds of thousands of dollars each,” Clowdus says of Conaway on his campaign website.

“I think it was a bad, bad political decision,” Armey said of the 34 Senate Republicans and 91 House Republicans who voted for the TARP bailout, “and if you talk to grass-roots activists, it has become a political test for them.”

Moylan agreed that TARP is “really kind of the flash point that started all of this.”

“People are paying attention and are willing to hold these people accountable,” he said.

For some, supporting insurgent campaigns or waging primary bids just isn’t a strong enough signal to send to a Republican Party that has abandoned core conservative policies.

Erick Erickson, founder and editor of the influential conservative blog RedState, has urged tea party activists to “put down the protest signs” and stage takeovers of local Republican parties.

“Grass-roots activists need to start infiltrating the party,” said Erickson. “The only way to start getting [the establishment] back is to start pounding them with every fist we have.”

maybe! but they have bought the lie that if you remove government everyone will sort themselves out. if we didn't need government of some kind why did we create one?

the reagan administration took the populist stance that government is the problem. to a certain extent i agree.

but government paves the roads, builds the bridges, maintains the loony bins (or used to), funds the schools and most hospitals...
when medicare came in it was to huge opposition. now they're afraid it will be taken away!!

in a small country with few people and plenty of land government is barely necessary. jefferson warned against over-population and congregation in cities as being major influences in the corruption of the body politick. he also warned against getting into debt!!

smart people, with a little capital, probably jwhop actually, are taking advantage of the "correction' in the real estate business (and others) and getting properties and businesses dirt cheap right now. later they will profit enormously from this. even in the present they are making money!

recession prevents OVERgrowth. some people think it should just keep growing for ever...even the universe reaches a maximum point and then retracts!

i suspect most teabaggers are NOT rich people, though they will have their rich supporters who will make money out of this whole thing too.

I disagree that TARP kicked off the unrest in the Republican Party...and general unrest and unease in America. That's the spin. The truth is there are many...millions, Democrats, Republicans and Independents who have been fed up with the Washington establishment elitists for years. This time, we intend to do something about these people who have come to believe they are our "rulers" when they are in actuality, our employees.

What do you do when your employees attempt to tell you what you must do and what you must not do? What do you do when your employees ignore policies and attempt to institute their own, against your wishes?

YOU FIRE THOSE EMPLOYEES

We seem to have a failure to communicate. I'm a man of my word. Here's your postage paid envelop with a copy of my previous comments. Perhaps you can find someone at the RNC who can actually read with comprehension.

Saturday, July 25, 2009

Yes, I want to help America. Yes, I want to help the Conservatives protect America and American taxpayers.

That's the reason I'm not sending a cent to the Republican Party.

I'm not going to contribute a cent to help elect the likes of Arlen Specter, Susan Collins, Olympia Snow, Mel Martinez, Charlie Crist, Mary Mack, Mike Castle, Mark Kirk, John McHugh, Frank LaBlondo, Leonard Lance, Dave Reichert, Chris Smith, Richard Lugar, John McCain, Lindsey Graham or any of the other so called Republicans who gleefully stab Conservatives...and America in the back at every opportunity.

I told the RNC years ago to find, fund and run bright, energetic, articulate real Conservative candidates against democrats and some of our so called Republicans.

That didn't happen and the same pattern continues.

I'm being nice this time. I'm sending your letter with my comments back in one of my own envelopes and my own stamp.

Next time you send me a request for money, I'm going to send you back an empty envelope; your own postage paid envelope.

katatonic, your comments show you have absolutely no understanding of the system of government mandated by the US Constitution.

It's not the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT which is responsible for building the bridges, paving the roads, funding the schools or most of the other imperatives you would list. No authority or jurisdiction is found in the US Constitution for Federal Government incursion into the rights and responsibilities of the States...and/or The People.

I've directed you to the US Constitution at least once so far. So far, you seem to have taken a pass on reading what it says.

You have the right to remain silent katatonic...and that's what you should do when you contemplate and decide to comment on what I am doing...about anything at all.

didn't they listen to big jwhop? doesn't everyone think exactly the same as you? boohoo. go have your tantrum in the corner like a real live boy.

government does a lot of things besides what i listed. do you really want to read the whole kit every time? actually i am surprised you read that one, it was longer than two sentences.

the constitution was written in the 18th century. it leaves plenty of room for interpretation, and a changing world. things, unlike you jwhop, have changed since then. and in case you haven't heard you are not the only voice of america.

when you have just a little tolerance for others' way of seeing things then i may consider you a true american. right now YOU are on the losing side and i know how that hurts the double leo ego but its a fact of life.

flipped any real estate lately? business is not so bad these days is it really? i know people who instead of sitting around moaning about it are out there getting theirs.

There is no interpretation to be put on these words katatonic.

Where the Constitution is clear, it is to be followed in whatever age one happens to live in America.

I know you still didn't read it katatonic. The language is clear and doesn't need any judicial interpretation.

Tenth Amendment - Reserved Powers

The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.

Now katatonic, how is it you don't understand exactly what the 10th Amendment means...since it means exactly what it says?

As to whether or not the RNC is listening to me katatonic....it's not just me katatonic who's fed up with the establishment elitists in Washington DC.

Unlike you katatonic, I refuse to support those posers who say one thing to get elected to office then do the opposite. People like O'Bomber and the rest of the Coven of Socialists in Congress who lied through their teeth to get elected or reelected. They talk like Conservatives on the campaign trail but then act like the loony leftists they really are once they're warming their chairs in the Senate and House.

It's you who are on the losing side katatonic. It's you who endorse out of control government. It's you who say you have a right to believe what lying politicians say to get themselves elected. It's you who doesn't understand the first thing about the rule of law governing the United States. It's you who doesn't understand the United States has a "center-right" population with 60% of Americans saying they are conservatives.

I don't "flip" real estate. Anyone attempting that in this real estate market of declining values is going to get killed. Do you even know what the term means?

It seems the difference between the fed and the states is often ignored. I don't want a big federal government ruling over everything. Why can't the states have power ... as was intended?

Why people are so obsessed with a Walmart approach to everything, including government, I'll never understand. Imo, some people are just lazy. They want "someone" to take care of things and then be able to complain when things don't suit them. If power were appropriately returned to the states, people would not just be able to but would have to get more involved; responsibility would be in plain sight. But heaven forbid reality tv lose ratings. /rant off

"Unlike you katatonic, I refuse to support those posers who say one thing to get elected to office then do the opposite"

i understand you voted in the last election, so spare me the righteous stance. do you honestly think mccain and palin were going to keep all of THEIR promises?

if i ran for president i would have a bunch of things i would want to do too, but the reality is that none of them know what they're going to be able to do when they actually get in. hence the vast majority of "broken promises". reality rears its ugly head...

you could say they shouldn't make promises then, and you would be right. but that doesn't seem to get anyone votes, and you can't do ANYTHING unless you get in, can you? seen "primary colours"?

the constitution was written to uphold the rights of the people, and describe the powers of the government to protect and support those rights. the "people" have changed beyond recognition - in those days we had slaves for a start - but the rights of a lot of them have never been addressed.

so i take it you think the feds should have let segregation be in the states - and the obviously fair solution would be for all the "coloureds" to move north where it was not legal - or get their heads kicked in for fun on saturday night? desegegation was infringeing on states' rights, or so many thought. and a right hash was made of it in a lot of ways too. but something had to be done. i don't think louisiana was going to change by itself, do you?

to be honest, jwhop, if you have a realistic plan to cut back on both state and fed govts i would love to hear it. but it has to include the protection of EVERYone's rights, not just the upper half of the country, not just one colour or religion, not just people who agree with you, but EVERYBODY.

how ARE you going to do that?

i agree in spirit with a LOT of the republican stance, believe it or not. it's just so obvious that they don't stand by it. i would love to see less government and more people involved, but as i've said before, the state governments are worse than the feds in MANY areas.

sometimes i wish i HAD a tv so i could tune all this garbage out.

Just for the record, "we" did not create a government. Rather, special interests created one and imposed it on everyone else. The metaphor I think of for "government" is people who break your legs and then convince you that you need them to give you crutches.

katatonic, there is no reason whatsoever for O'Bomber to not be able to "accomplish" whatever he wants.

Let's recap shall we?

demoscats have a majority in the House of Representatives and only a simple majority is required to pass ANY piece of legislation they want passed.

There are 435 House members of which 256 members are demoscats. Far more than the simple majority required to pass any piece of legislation they desire.

In the Senate, demoscats also have a majority and have the 60 demoscat members necessary to overcome any filibuster to stop any legislation they desire.

The point of this katatonic is to show your argument is specious. O'Bomber is in a position to get what he wants. All he needs is the support of demoscat members of Congress. He doesn't need a single Republican vote to pass any legislation.

The reason for all the wrangling on the catastrophe called O'BomberCare is that demoscats are scared to death of voters and want cover from some Republicans so they can SAY the legislation was passed on a bi-partisan basis.

So far, they're already saying the Senate Finance Committee bill for O'BomberCare IS bi-partisan. They got ONE (1) Republican vote...and from one of the usual suspects...Olympia Snowe. That's what constitutes bi-partisanship when demoscats are running scared of voters in the coming elections.

But, O'Bomber could get what he wants without a single Republican vote. It's questionable whether demoscat congressional members are going to march off the reelection cliff for the catastrophe called O'BomberCare.

you have just made the point that democrats do not think as a single entity. so what?

the healthcare thing progresses, slowly as it should, so people can work out the snarls. nothing is being "rammed" down the people's throats, nothing is finalized yet but it moves forward.

Yeah, that's why Pee-Lousy, Dingy Harry..Reid, Rahm, the brother of the immoral, unethical adviser to O'Bomber, Dufus, the drafter of the Senate Finance version and several other administration officials are meeting behind closed doors to now craft O'BomberCare they believe they can RAM down the throats of American citizens...before anyone, including House and Senate members can even read the Bill.

You know, meeting behind closed doors...right out there in the open. Isn't O'Bomber's promise of "transparency" in his administration simply wonderful?

i'm sorry how are they going to ram it down anyone's throats without congress reading it? unless congress chooses not to read it, which would not be a first i'm sure...

are you suggesting a coup is about to take place, or are they just going to send all the congressmen and senators home till they've done passing this bill by themselves?

Well katatonic, you don't seem to object to the IRS provisions in O'BomberCare. Provisions which demand you state on your tax return that you have a "qualifying" health insurance plan...under "Penalty of Perjury". That's right katatonic, the IRS is empowered by O'BomberCare.

You don't seem to object to the IRS provisions which say the IRS can fine you for not having a suitable/"qualifying" plan...and/or prosecute you if you fail to pay the fine.

You don't seem to object to the provision which gives the IRS the automatic authority to monitor your private bank account.

You don't seem to object to the provision which says the IRS has the pre-approved authority to go into your private bank account and withdraw money from your account....just like a pre-approved withdrawal to pay for your cable TV service or any of the other monthly pre-approved withdrawals merchants commonly ask for.

You don't seem to object to the provisions which removes half a trillion dollars from the Medicare budget.

You don't seem to object to the provisions which say you can keep your own insurance policy and your own doctor...PROVIDING...that private policy is approved by the feds AND...that NO CHANGES whatsoever are made to that insurance policy as to coverage; even adding a dependent voids that private policy as to it's being a "qualifying" insurance plan.

You don't seem to object to the provision in HR 3200 which sets up a special panel of so called experts...bureaucrats really...who will decide what treatments your own doctor can provide for you.

This disastrous bill is loaded with totally unacceptable provisions all designed to disqualify private insurance policies and punish you with fines and even jail time if you don't comply. What kind of American are you?

You prattle on about liberty, freedom and the usual leftist chatter but it's clear you either don't believe a word of what you say on those subjects or you simply don't know a thing about O'BomberCare...or both of the forgoing.

and it's clear you prefer boxing with shadows to doing anything positive about the situation.

there IS no bill yet. and there is no IRS demand for proof of my insurance coverage.

and there is no way short of a coup that nancy pelosi and friends can pass a bill without putting it through congress for votes first.

you are raving dear watson.

the cyanide was mixed in kool-aid. several layers of meaning here .... such as 1) the drinker in question is a victim of cult-like brainwashing or manipulation i.e. isn't thinking clearly 2) the drinker in question is ingesting (believing) something harmful(cyanide), the taste (truth) of which is masked by something sweet (kool-aid) yada yada you get the picture
