too bad we don't have DRUG TESTING IN CONGRESS. half of them are alcoholics and if they're not using prescription (or other)speed as well i'd be very surprised. what else do they take? oxycontin?

we are giving a lot more money to our representatives and they are abusing it a lot more.

Lower income areas are wrought with drug abuse.

This sort of talk makes me nervous. The middle and upper classes don't use drugs? C'mon.

meth is relatively rare in my neck of the woods.

And I doubt any true drug addiction can be satisfied once a month.

That was my point. There are recreational users and then there are strung out addicts. Exactly how often can I smoke, snort, swallow, or inject something the state doesn't approve of before it cuts off my food stamps? Once a month, once a week, once a day?

Another question: alcohol? Are we weeding out the alcoholics too?

I'd be satisfied with drug testing. Can we drug test congress? Please? Because I'm willing to bet we'll have more than a few positive results.

I think they are. We just moved to a new area for a job my new wife got. I just quit my job after working it part time for a few months during the transition. Now I'm a house-husband as I search for a job. Got an interview a little later today for a Fire Dispatcher position.

It's pretty cool being a house-husband. You get to do all those things you'd do if you only had the energy. I tend the garden, feed the birds, make awesome healthy dinners, clean the house in a relaxed fashion. There's plenty of time for everything.

Alcohol is legal. Yes, let's reward criminals by paying them not to work. Great idea. And let's fund their criminal enterprise with tax dollars. Another great idea.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, GUYS!

AG - Being a SAHM is similarly liberating - it's all work that has to be done, it just used to be done all at once in the evening and on the weekend (especially with two, now three, children).
Good luck on the job search!

Re: Testing: If it was going to be used for treatment, I'd be more for it. As it is, it isn't a cost-savings measure: http://www.politifact.com/florida/promises/scott-o-meter/pr omise/600/require-drug-screening-for-welfare-recipients/

As they've been presented/implemented, though, why not kick people out for smoking?
Poor people certainly spend more on cigarettes than on drugs. Or for being alcoholics (for the same reason)?
For finding a doctor feel-good who will prescribe stimulants or opiates?

The kids of these people with these problems have enough going against them - taking away their TANF, WIC, or whatever won't help anything.
The fact is that the parents will likely choose the substance over their kids. Might as well make sure the kids can get some protein.

It's not illegal to smoke or drink. If doing so causes neglect of the child(ren), then that would be a matter for child services. Does anyone here think that if they are using illegal drugs they should still be able to collect benefits?

I think that, yes, they should, as long as they enter treatment.
Astrological aside: Typical Cappie ;p
Worried about the legality rather than underlying problems of addiction.

Some questions:
What about in states in which pot is legal?
What about 20-year-old parents with a drinking problem?

An aside: Child welfare offices are already crap because no one wants to adequately fund and staff them - would you allow for an increase in taxes to cover both the cost of testing and a beefing up of child services?
How about an increase for the extra children placed in foster care?
For their placement, maintanace, and follow-up care?

Another aside: We finished the coop!

I like your posts, mockingbird.

Randall, everyone with a criminal record should be denied benefits? Violent crimes, federal crimes, misdemeanors? Are we drawing the line somewhere or are we good with the whole lot?

Happy birthdays all around!

In MI the 4 year limit on State aid has proved positive. The recipents moved onto jobs (help gained by State) and earn a living. Yes it is mainly minimum wage but that is about equal to State funds. They continue to get food and some medical benefits. Some child care is involved too.

I certainly don`t begrudge folks in need and am happy to help fund them but I do begrudge those who take advantage of the working man/womans dollar.

I haven`t seen the drug bill yet here so I don`t know the mechanics of it.

I`m sure there is a way to work it to the advantage of the honest and needy.

kat, yes. I was 26 years old when I joined & my sun is at 26 degrees Taurus.

I was born on the 17th. My life is riddled with numerology that reduces to the karmic number 8.

I thought this was about drug testing, not criminal testing or background checks They do not always go hand in hand you know.
