"Facebook: "This is their information. They own it"

BBC: "And you won’t sell it?"

FB: "No! Of course not."

Right! Check!

Facebook is not a social media site. It's the world's largest data miner. It grew from something called "network effect," where droves left MySpace en mass. This might be what causes the reverse.

You mean..."easy money"...like signing people up to a so called social site where the members...and their data ARE the product to be monetized and sold for targeted advertising. Now, that's "easy money"!

Yeah Randall, and most Face Book members don't even know it...or didn't know it until the news got splashed all over the news.

Face Book users treated like research rats.

Social media users treated as 'experimental rats,' EU data watchdog says as he urges more changes from Facebook
Arjun Kharpal

...."There are days when you have the impression people are treated as battery animals or experimental rats. We are treated as a farm for data. We are in within a walled garden and every single action is monitored," Buttarelli said......

^ ^ Only if we smear our personal lives all over social media.

Simple fix, quit "sharing" and quit being a lab rat.

And then, there's this bombshell report.

Facebook Was Trying to Buy Medical Data From Hospitals
Doomberg
Apr 6, 2018

I have to admit that even knowing what the “big data” companies like Google and Facebook were doing to peoples’ privacy, this admission comes as a surprise to me:

Facebook has asked several major U.S. hospitals to share anonymized data about their patients, such as illnesses and prescription info, for a proposed research project. Facebook was intending to match it up with user data it had collected, and help the hospitals figure out which patients might need special care or treatment.

The proposal never went past the planning phases and has been put on pause after the Cambridge Analytica data leak scandal raised public concerns over how Facebook and others collect and use detailed information about Facebook users.

“This work has not progressed past the planning phase, and we have not received, shared, or analyzed anyone’s data,” a Facebook spokesperson told CNBC.

But as recently as last month, the company was talking to several health organizations, including Stanford Medical School and American College of Cardiology, about signing the data-sharing agreement.

While the data shared would obscure personally identifiable information, such as the patient’s name, Facebook proposed using a common computer science technique called “hashing” to match individuals who existed in both sets. Facebook says the data would have been used only for research conducted by the medical community.

The project could have raised new concerns about the massive amount of data Facebook collects about its users, and how this data can be used in ways users never expected.

Facebook accused of conducting mass surveillance through its apps
Company gathered data from texts and photos of users and their friends, court case claims
Carole Cadwalladr and Emma Graham-Harrison
24 May 2018

Facebook used its apps to gather information about users and their friends, including some who had not signed up to the social network, reading their text messages, tracking their locations and accessing photos on their phones, a court case in California alleges.

The claims of what would amount to mass surveillance are part of a lawsuit brought against the company by the former startup Six4Three, listed in legal documents filed at the superior court in San Mateo as part of a court case that has been ongoing for more than two years....
