CDC estimates that the burden of illness during the 2018–2019 season included an estimated 35.5 million people getting sick with influenza, 16.5 million people going to a health care provider for their illness, 490,600 hospitalizations, and 34,200 deaths from influenza

Asian people are apparently being attacked, and some people are also avoiding Asian restaurants, because of this. That's just stupid. I hope our local restaurant isn't suffering, because of it all.

Contrary to somes thinking, i am not oblivious to the danger of the current virus.
My virgo moon already demands proper behaviors to avoid germs.
It is sad so many ill/dying and the panic its causing the general populations is even sadder.
A rehash of ebola, swine, bird and all the other panic causing flu'

I feel the same way.

I’ve been teased about how long it takes me to wash my hands, but I rarely catch colds or the flu. I need to disinfect my phone more often - dad has Lysol wipes in the van.

The "it's just the flu" take is unbearably stupid. There are some topics I know nothing about nor care to know. The stock market, for example. So you know what I do? I stay out of those conversations.

* yearly seasonal flu hospitalizations and deaths remain stable. The numbers do not increase exponentially, as is Corona. Rates reliably increase in winter and decrease in summer. Corona isnt doing that.
* Seasonal flu transmisibility remains stable and doesnt even approach Corona. Eg seasonal flu remains on surfaces for a few hrs max. Corona up to 9 days. Seasonal flu has shown no signs of being airborne. Corona has.
* The seasonal flu is a known entity. Our medical communities understand how it works, what to expect, and are generally well prepared to assist patients. Meanwhile, our hospitals are running out of ppe due to Corona. Multiple countries have banned the export of various ppe because they're running out. eg Germany just banned the export of masks and gloves.
* we have vaccines and anti virals for the seasonal flu. These do not work on Corona.
*The seasonal flu is easily and accurately identifiable. Corona tests are in their infancy, with accuracy and availability issues.
*the seasonal flu doesnt spread via asymptomatic carriers up to 14 day ( possibly more)
* we have all been exposed to the seasonal flu, it is not a new virus eg smallpox for the native americans.

These are some reasons why the seasonal flu doesnt compel the world's second largest economy to shut down, or major first world nations like Italy and Japan to close *all* their schools, or India to restrict the export of 26 active pharmaceutical ingredients (antibiotics and otc painkillers incl.), or European urban hospitals to run out of ICU beds with plans to set up army triage tent centers to handle the overflow.

Just for your information, 34,200 US deaths from influenza averages 94 US deaths per day.

There have been a total of 11 US deaths in the US from Corona Virus.

Yes, Corona Virus is highly contagious but with 34,000 US influenza deaths in 2018-2019, influenza is several orders of magnitude more contagious.

Democrats and their political propaganda arm, the MSM have politicized Corona Virus. But where were they when Obama waited until Millions were infected and 1000 were dead of H1N1 (swine flu) before declaring an emergency? Not a peep from democrats...nor from you!

Fact-Check: Obama Waited Until 'Millions' Infected and 1000 Dead in U.S. Before Declaring H1N1 Emergency
Victoria Taft
2020-02-28

CNN reported in October 2009:

Since the H1N1 flu pandemic began in April, millions of people in the United States have been infected, at least 20,000 have been hospitalized and more than 1,000 have died, said Dr. Thomas Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention......
http://pjmedia.com/trending/fact-check-obama-waited-until-millions-infected-and-1000-dead-in-u-s-before-declaring-h1n1-emergency/

So, what's so special about dying from Corona Virus that makes it so much worse than dying from influenza?

Oh wait, I know.

Trump is President now and the Marxist Messiah, Obama was President in 2009.
World of difference.

????
Corona has estimated R0 of between 3 and 5. Maybe 6. Seasonal flu is less than 2. Is asymptomatic carrier a difficult concept?

Why are you talking about swine flu?

Btw, about 17,000 Americans died of H1N1 (Swine Flu) in the 2008-2009 flu season, hitting children hard.

As for your other point.

I don't know how many actually contract Corona Virus but for many, it's mild and goes unreported. If all cases were reported, the death rate would fall.

That does not compute.

Cause of death is listed on Death Certificates. Further, those so sick that they die of Corona Virus almost certainly visit their doctor and are hospitalized.

On the other hand, those who contract a mild case of Corona Virus probably don't know it's Corona Virus...as opposed to ordinary flu and probably don't even visit their doctor. So, it goes unreported as Corona Virus. Those unreported, non fatal, cases would drive down the fatality rates for Corona Virus...if they had been reported.

Jwhop people - even very ill and hospitalized people - arent being tested. That's part of the problem.

I don't believe that people in the hospital, ill with influenza type symptoms aren't being tested for Corona Virus.

Dozens of people are experiencing just that and telling their stories but you dont believe them despite official admission that we're barely testing people. Ok.
