The national shortage of N95 respirator masks can be traced back to 2009 after the H1N1 swine flu pandemic, when the Obama administration was advised to replenish a national stockpile but did not, according to reports from Bloomberg News and the Los Angeles Times.

The Trump administration is scrambling to replenish a stockpile of protective medical gear for healthcare workers and patients as the coronavirus sweeps across the nation. N95 respirator masks are one of the most needed medical supplies amid the outbreak.

The George W. Bush administration published the National Strategy for Pandemic Influenza plan in 2005, which called on the federal government to distribute medical supplies from the Strategic National Stockpile governed by the Health and Human Services Department in the event of an outbreak.

In 2009, the H1N1 outbreak hit the United States, leading to 274,304 hospitalizations, 12,469 deaths, and a depletion of N95 respirator masks.

A federally backed task force and a safety equipment organization both recommended to the Obama administration that the stockpile be replenished with the 100 million masks used after the H1N1 outbreak.

Charles Johnson, president of the International Safety Equipment Association, said that advice was never heeded.

“Our association is unaware of any major effort to restore the stockpile to cover that drawdown,” he said.

HHS Secretary Alex Azar reported last month that only 12 million N95 masks were available in the stockpile, “a tiny fraction of the 3.5 billion masks one of Azar’s deputies later testified the nation’s healthcare system would need,” the Los Angeles Times noted.

Bloomberg News reported similar findings last week, noting, "After the H1N1 influenza outbreak in 2009, which triggered a nationwide shortage of masks and caused a 2- to 3-year backlog [of] orders for the N95 variety, the stockpile distributed about three-quarters of its inventory and didn’t build back the supply.”...........

A report from the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) and the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security (JHCHS) in a late 2019 ranked the United States at the best-prepared country to handle a pandemic.

This news surfaces as Democrats and never Trumpers, (the usual suspects) are criticizing the Trump administration for its handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

The report, the Global Health Security Index, was “developed with guidance from an international panel of experts from 13 countries, with research by the Economist Intelligence Unit” from 2018 to 2019, the Washington Post reported.

“More than 100 researchers spent a year collecting and validating publicly available data,” the Post reported.

The report also noted the flaws in U.S. preparedness, including factors like social unrest, terrorism, and low public trust in the federal government.

Fox News reported how this analysis clashes with Trump’s critics view of the government’s response to the coronavirus:

President Trump’s campaign has argued in recent days that misinformation may be one of the leading causes of that lack of confidence. For example, Trump’s team has pointed to claims by presidential contender Joe Biden that “no one on the National Security Council staff was put in charge” of pandemic preparedness, based on a report that in May 2018, then-National Security Adviser John Bolton eliminated the NSC’s Office of Global Health Security and Biodefense in a reorganization effort.

Rear Adm. R. Timothy Ziemer reportedly was ousted as senior director, and no replacement was named. But, FactCheck.org has determined that the matter amounted to a reorganization, and that “some team members [of the NSC pandemic office] were shifted to other groups, and others took over some of [the top official’s] duties.”

The White House says the NSC remains involved in responding to the coronavirus pandemic. A senior administration official said earlier this month that the NSC’s global health security directorate was absorbed into another division where similar responsibilities still exist, but under different titles. The work of coordinating policy and making sure that decisions made by Trump’s coronavirus task force are implemented is still the job of the NSC.

Some of that misinformation comes from former Vice President Joe Biden’s campaign, including Biden’s claim that Trump once called the virus a “hoax,” which was debunked by numerous fact-checkers, Fox News reported, “which found that Trump was clearly referring to Democrats’ efforts to blame him for the pandemic, not the virus itself.”

Democrats and Biden have also claimed that the Trump administration cut funding to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), but the Associated Press “has noted that those claims ‘distort’ the facts.”

“The CDC’s response has been excellent, as it has been in the past,” John Auerbach, president of the nonpartisan Trust for America’s Health, which works with the federal government to improve response to public health threats, said in the Fox News report.

“Democrats have charged that Trump decimated the nation’s public health leadership, but Auerbach said CDC’s top scientific ranks have remained stable during the past three years,” Fox News reported.

Is not Obama's Fault or Trump's Fault, Is China's Fault, they covered up what was happening after this thing started to spread in their country, then lied about their numbers and said they recovered and while they were supposedly "recovered" were ordering a bunch of medical supplies world wide and then realized a number of the medical supplies were faulty then sold the faulty supplies to Italy, Spain and the czech republic.

Obama failed in many ways yes but I don't think this particular thing is his fault.

You're conflating issues.

No one is blaming Obama or Trump for the coronavirus outbreak. China has a level 4 lab at the epicenter of the outbreak. China lied to the world about the human to human transmissibility of coronavirus. China permitted the Lunar New Year celebration to go forward...at the epicenter of their coronavirus outbreak. Then, permitted those people to fly off to all points on the globe...without any screening and without any warning to other nations, including the US, all of Europe and especially Italy.

Obama is being blamed...rightfully so...for not replacing critical medical supplies after the H1N1 Swine Flu epidemic.

They spent the last week trying to make Trump look insane for a promising treatment, so now that it's approved we are seeing dozens of headlines like : "FDA authorizes widespread use of unproven drugs to treat coronavirus, saying possible benefit outweighs risk" , "There’s scant evidence so far for chloroquine as a COVID-19 drug", "Without data, but with Trump praise, FDA issues emergency nod for chloroquine in COVID-19."

It's the same old "without evidence" scam, but with 30+ million doses rolling out, they are going to be married to the drug needing to be bad no matter what, because Trump can never be right about anything.
