I am musing on this.I have done more than 60 psychic readings--maybe 100.
I lose count cuz I love it so much

The thing I am pondering is that when you see a "weird" person ,can they help it?

There are all forms of being weird and we all ARE,I am quite sure lol

I do find that there is a scale for mental illness.
This is my own sense of it.Also, I have read similar things.
Good mental health would be a realistic viewing of yourself and life.
Poor mental health would be a distorted view.

The spectrum of mental health is proportional to how realistically you view yourself.

In my readings,I have crossed a wide span from mildly neurotic to" out there"
I am beginning to think people CANNOT help mental illness.
It is a distorted lens from which one sees the world.
I do not fight so if anyone fights ,I will not answer that person.
Other than that,I would like to hear comments
and experience.

I am pondering "Can a mentally ill person help it if they are a jerk?"
I would say "Yes and No"
They cannot help distorted thinking but they will not ACT like a jerk if a big cop with a gun is breathing down their back.
So,what gives with this? lol

I guess what I am getting at,too, is the issue of power.
If someone is mentally ill and they THINK they can hurt you cuz you are weak, they prolly will.
What if you are strong? Then what?
Will they hurt you,then?
I am not talking about physical hurt, here, but emotional such as bullying and demeaning.

Mental illness is a vast topic, IMO. EXTREMELY short & sweet, some aren't ill they're just different (and I'd say Einstein is an example); others are ill yet still better prepared to deal with life than those who are more grounded; some overcome their illness and hangups admirably while others just seem to mire in them and use their illness as an excuse to put out less effort than other people; and some are ill because of chemical imbalances while others have become ill through traumatic experiences and the like. Some can overcome their illness while others find it a lifelong battle.

As for the repeated question about the mentally ill and being a jerk, as a GENERAL rule those jerks & bullies claiming to be mentally ill (and I'm not arguing them, though maybe I should) generally behave better to those they know can and will kick their butts. A friend of mine even shared about how an "out of control" mentally ill guy suddenly found self-control when my friend met him with a shotgun as the mentally ill guy tried kicking his door in. Ever since then he continued to menace others but ignored the guy who pulled a shotgun on him. But as many say "crazy doesn't mean stupid."

And I'd like to add that I visited a psychiatric hospital a few months ago visiting someone who had attempted suicide. What I found amazing was how NORMAL most of those locked up were, not really any different or more dysfunctional than plenty of other people I know. Granted, they were generally kept doped up but then many "normal" people drink & drug a lot, too.

And every time I visited I had to give up my purse and asked if I had any weapons on me before I could enter the unit. One time the guy doing this apologized and I truthfully told him that I'm used to such treatment since high school...and there are plenty of people around me I don't even trust with fingernail files.

Finally, I'd like to add that shortly after reading a book that stated mental illness was a myth a friend said something I've come to consider very true and profound: "Mental illness isn't a myth...mental wellness is."

This is related but a little of an aside from the original question.
Why DON"T people bully?
Some people I could never see bullying someone?
Others are just waiting for the right person to come along TO bully?
What makes the difference in the two people, here?

I think they can help it, but under normal circumstances they only have so much control. Sure stress and anxiety can tell a person something is important, that guy had a shot gun and is threatening me, but if everyone was weilding shotguns like that, that guy would still be crazy and the craziness would come out some other way. I'd imagine the trauma of encountering so many shotguns wouldn't help.

Of course, allowing it to take place only reinforces those circuits. This is why some people want to use electroconvulsive therapy as a first line treatment for bipolar, and it is so highly recommended in some areas. The kindling effect with bipolar disorder is a lot more to fight off as bipolar almost always gets worse with age unless it's extremely well managed. Then there are genetic twins and one goes bipolar and the other is fine.

I talk about this too much, but sometimes the distortion is a part of the healing process. Like in kundalini when it's poorly handled or you're cleaning out your 3rd chakra and one day you're egotistical and the next day super insecure.

Certainly some people don't heal shamanic initiations and some heal enough that they are functional but they're still a little off. Many successful shaman still act rather mentally ill at times.

There are people who suppress their wounds and function fine and people who can't. I think if we were in a more emotionally functioning society, there would be less mental illness, and people with distortions (we all have some) would function better.

I was reading one book saying that bipolar disorder was really an umbrella term, and they found that with many people whom lithium was an effective treatment, it was really more of a heavy metal poisoning than anything else, which wouldn't get better without chelation treatment. Some people just react poorly to the toxins in our environment too, or have celiac disease (another thing commonly misdiagnosed as bipolar). I have hypothyroidism too, and without treatment using conventional medicine, you can't expect the brain fog and depression to go away.

I know some of that was stating the obvious.

I know I also don't have a handle well enough on kundalini to be normal, but I'm trying. I've researched a lot of psychology, neuroscience, and now spirituality hoping I can cure my ills. It takes a lot of acceptance, mindfulness, compassion, and time to change your brain.

Honestly, I often times think that "mental illness" is just a simple diagnosis for what could be a more complex situation. For example, I had doctors try to put me on all sorts of psychological medication when I was experiences anxiety and depression, I knew I wasn't a nut job from well, encountering REAL crazy people. A year later they reduced it down to my thyroid levels being abnormal and after being on the proper medication I could tell a HUGE difference in how I felt mentally. The same goes for a close friend of mine, she has been diagnosed with clinical depression and even receives social security for her condition, but to be honest I think most of it is due to the fact she has polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, and I have noticed that the women I know who have to suffer with it always seem really down. We also live in such a toxic food environment with all sorts of additives I'm sure our bodies have to use alot of its resources just to purge all the junk out. Geeze, its getting to the point I'm almost afraid to eat. Tonight I opened up a fresh package of butter to find a long strand of hair looking at me from the processing plant, I opened up a new cartoon of eggs that wreaked of rot. I do think that there is true mental illness out there, and that many of those people probably dont even realize something is wrong with them. I think those that feel like something is most likely off are probably suffering from a medical condition that keeps getting misdiagnosed.

Regarding warped perspective: Mentally ill people can't help themselves, without having a better "lens" to see themselves through.

Otherwise, what seems to be the norm: ill people isolate themselves and surround themselves with individuals who will reinforce bad behaviors or allow the ill individual to continue to "hide" from a real perspective of themselves.

ALOT depends on the intention of the mentally ill person, as well. They have to want to consider how their actions effect others, and have true intent to change/improve/recover.

People CAN get needed help from medication, experienced therapists (who are educated, and have good, professional intentions), and from a supportive/progressive community of people.

PS you're forgetting that celiac disease and a lot of severe food allergies look like severe mental illness.

The reason celiac disease is commonly misdiagnosed as bipolar disorder, with the individual subsequently loaded up on antipsychotics, is the rage and lethargic brain fog that goes with it. Celiac disease is actually decently common among northern european populations. Making matters worse, to diagnose it conclusively some people need an intestinal biopsy because it does not always show up on bloodwork.

There was a woman who was diagnosed with severe schizoaffective disorder and spent the entirety of her life in hospital and trying to beat anyone who was over her. They finally took her to a holistic treatment center where they discovered she was severely allergic to nearly everything. Through many years of accupuncture treatments to reverse her allergies, she gradually got better and after spending her whole life in institutions was holding down a full time job with her own apartment etc, a perfectly normal and productive member of society.

We cannot look at mental illness one dimensionally via symptoms alone, and to condemn them to a lifetime of ill health when we hardly understand mental illness seems a bit premature..

I want to say this up front. This is NOT a diss on anyone who had taken medication for their problems.
I have not walked a mile in your shoes and as such, cannot judge your choices.
In MY particular theory ,one would not take medication unless it were necessary in life or death cases.
I am formulating MY theory. This thread is to discuss it and share.
I know there are other theories, obviously.
Theories are like noses. We,all, have one and they usually have a few holes in them.

My theory is based on my work as the Assistant of a world famous homeopath.
I do not say this to brag but just to share where part of my thoughts come from.
I believe that ANY condition, mental or physical can be healed .
I think God made us to be self healing creatures.
The hard part is finding the way.

If you see a little kid, they have needs, for example.
They want to shout, talk, take the last cookie, play, giggle.
They want to be seen ,heard, the first, the most.
Well, often a parent will tell the child that these needs are bad.
The parent could do it in a light way or a strong way.
If the parent does it in a strong way,the child could feel HE is bad.

I am strongly against medications to treat mental illness, this is due to my experiences with psychotrophic (sp?) drugs. I didn't experience healing until I resolved to heal myself through deliberate intention and understanding the whys of what led me to my dismal state. In other words, I soul searched.

*I* ,personally agree with you,EES, 10000%.
However,I get humbled as I do readings. If a person chooses medication,I cannot judge that.even though *I* do not think it is the best way.
That is just from where *I* sit.I don't know what they suffered so cannot tell them they are wrong, for them.
