This is the adult room, so I figured I would post some taboo subjects to better understand things. Can a mentally retarded person consent to sexual acts or should they not have relationships at all?

It depends on the person/degree of mental acuity....and whether is it consensual and entered into willingly.

Some people with mental disabilities aren't 'wired' for sexual behaviour. They are childlike- and as such, may have a rational interest in child play, but not in an adult sense.

so even in adulthood they don't seem to gravitate towards sex?

Mentally challenged people still have urges even though they may not understand them.

I think what you do is develop relationships with other people who have similar disabilities.

I hope this is a real question AM
and I truly hope this thread was not meant to laugh at or make fun of the mentally challenged.

Like my (superstitious) Grandmother used to say
"if you make fun of them, you'll have one"
and then it won't be so funny.

Here's giving you the benefit of doubt.

I think it depends on the level of mental disability. I have a couple of guy friends both are on SSI for mental disabilities. Both are able to maintain relationships and sexual one's at that. They are both just a little slow in their thinking. But it really depends on the person.

If you are truly being serious and not a complete a--hole, then it would depend on the degree of mental disability because their ability to consent to sexual relationship depends on that.

hmm well i do have a retarded uncle. crazy runs in the fam unfortunately lulz. he masturbates a lot or used to. talks to his imaginary girlfriend on the telephone, but he holds the pusher so he doesn't hear the dial tone. he lived with my other uncle once who kind of reminds me of charlie sheen and was close to getting laid by a hooker but nothing ever came of it. he'd just masturbate infront of her. i think he's in his forties now but he still does 2nd grade workbooks. i posted his chart once on another forum and i think it showed signs from comments of other posters but i don't have his deets anymore.

the other sister huh. i should catch that. looks like it has a good cast. i thought flowers for algernon was cool but he's not dumb the whole movie.

sand - What is the medical term for what your uncle has? Do you know?
I'm also curious about his chart.

My friend's sister is schizofrenic. She also had an imaginary boyfriend and talked to him on the phone. It was a strange experience to speak to her because she was so sure this person was real and that he was her soulmate. Sometimes it makes me wonder as to what is going on - on a spiritual level.. and whether certain people are actually tapping on to something that 'exists' .. rather than making it up.

My adult sister is autistic. No, she absolutely can't consent to sexual acts of any kind with someone else. She does NOT have the mental capacity to understand the act or the potential consequences.

Performing a sexual act on my sister would be akin to performing a sexual act with someone that was nearly passed out after having too many beers, being slipped roofies or someone in a partial coma.

NOT ethical and legally considered rape.

edit to add: I agree that someone with only a *mild* mental disability is a different story but it would entirely depend on the situation. And the documentary I watched of the two Down Syndrome couple that recently married shows a scenario where it makes sense.

I believe it matters how severe there disibility is and there social skills are if they could be easily taken advantage of and say a "normal" person forced them that would be teribly wrong and even if they are severely handicapped who says they can't have a loving relationship ....Possibly with someone who suffers from the same disibility or someone that has a real bond with them .. My mother knew a girl who was severely retarded in a wheel chair the girl became pregnant !!!! My mom said she would repeat i'm a dog i'm a dog because that's what her own mother or person who was abusing her would say ! That almost made me cry I think social services stepped in i'm not sure ...

When you say she is autistic, what do you mean? People with autism have feelings and desires and can make choices. I don't understand.

When I write this, I am doing so in the eyes of some men, having studied them, I know. When you think about it, guys sometimes prey on an unintelligent or unaware girl, in hopes of getting some sexual benefit from her. right? Yet, sometimes women play submissive roles so that they can attract that type of man so the woman receives pleasure as well. So apply that to a person with mental deficiency. They too have sexual desires, so what are they supposed to do?

I mean she can't speak and only knows minimal and extremely basic sign language, she taps her fingers on anything and everything....all day.... all day.... all day... all day, she will never support herself financially or any other way, she didn't notice when her father died a couple years ago, she isn't social AT ALL, doesn't enjoy being around other people, can't go to restaurants or other public venues without being completely overwhelmed and having a meltdown, has to be put in a straightjacket to go to the dentist or have a haircut, and prefers to lock herself in her room most of the day unless my mother makes her a grilled cheese sandwich - which is ALL she will eat except for M&M's and Dr. Pepper.

So, I suppose she can make choices about M&M's but in no way, shape or form is she capable of making choices about sexual partners.
