Does anyone watch this show on A & E network?
I can't turn away when it's on.
I am so horrified, and yet feel so darn bad for these people that I can't stop watching it.

There have been some stories on there that are just heartbreaking, where folks have hoarded so much stuff, that they have cornered themselves into one small area of their homes, and they have to defecate and such in plastic bags. In one show, they removed thousands and thousands of pounds of human waste from a woman's home.
That one made me just sit and sob.

I notice the common theme is that this happens most of the time after a death.
Sometimes it happens after a divorce too.

Do you know any hoarders? Do you think Adult Protective Services should have the right to remove you from your home for your own good, or do you think that in your own home, you should be able to do whatever you wish?
And lastly, would you call APS on someone in your family if they had this disorder???

yess i watch it when it is on sometimes.

everytime i see a messy house i just have this urge to go their and clean it all. But it is one of the saddest things because people really get attached to things, it really means something to them whether its a fond memory of something in their past that they just dont want to let go of.

and i get so emotional when they start crying because it truly is like throwing a big part of yourself out in the trash even if it is materalistic things. we just get so attached. but i admire those who are willing to throw them out because it shows they want to change and make a better living situation for themselves.

its a really great show and it affects thousands of people around the world. i hope everyone can get helped wish them all the best.

I think we have a psychic connection b/c I had a strong feeling you would reply to this Deppy!

Being a Taurus do you hold on to stuff too?
My FIL is a Taurus and he rents extra garages to store stuff. My deceased Taurus grandpa was the same way.
Actually, most FIXED suns that I know go overboard with the keeping stuff that they "might need" later on.
Nothing wrong with a little of that, I always think it's cold hearted when people throw away their kids drawings or things like that, you know?

I guess the urge to hoard is just more or less a version of OCD, it's a repetitive action disorder. They find safety and security in their actions.

I wish they could all get help too!

I cannot, for the life of me, even change the channel to A&E when that show is on. It makes me sick to my stomach, so much that I feel sorry for those people. I'm not familiar with the psychology behind that disorder but it has to be super intense if it gets THAT bad. =(

I know whatcha mean Benedict, I feel the same way, but something compels me to watch it. I guess it's my interest in psychology.

I don't really totally understand the compulsion. I mean, I can understand the idea of somebody dying and you get their stuff and you have a hard time parting with it.. I get that, it happened to me. There is a sense of guilt in letting it go, and also there is a feeling of like.. Person X touched this, wore this, etc. etc.

BUT,, I don't understand the ones that have this disorder so badly that they cannot throw away their own trash. Like they literally keep every piece of trash from everything they cook or buy. That is beyond my comprehension. I guess it's a control/security thing.

Deppy, I'm pretty good about throwing stuff away. I did have four family members die in the early part of the 2000's and I was keeping it in storage for awhile, but I got tired of it.
I have Sag sun/venus and a 6th h stellium, so my saggie/virgo-ish-ness gets a little creeped out by clutter and by the feeling of having to 'take care of stuff'.

I saw on a website once where they suggested to someone with this problem (not as bad of a problem as the show) to photograph the actual items, and then donate the real items, and keep the photograph. I like simple, logical ideas like that.

have you ever seen grey gardens? the docu or the drew barrymore remake? they're not exactly hoarders coz they never went out much but i think it's a similar emotion they're feeling.

anyways i don't watch it often and have only caught glimpses but do they ever go back to a house? coz i'm pretty sure if it's cleaned and emptied there's still a very high chance it will revert back into what it was.

Yes, Sand, they do go back and do update shows, I just saw one a couple of weeks ago.
Unfortunately, a highter percentage of them revert back to the way it was before, and some of them get even worse, b/c it's like they are starting with a clean slate.

No, I've never seen this movie, I'm going to look it up on youtube right now.
That last name is familiar, wasn't that Jackie Kennedy's last name before she got married?

I`ve watched the program and it sickened me. I saw the one on hoarding animals, cats, rats and one on rabbits the other on chickens..
I was torn between watching and shutting it off.
The horrid abuse of the critters shouldn`t even be on t.v.. it was so heartbreaking for the hoarder too because they actually believe they are providing for their animals needs and the animals are fullfilling their needs..

I don`t understand compulsions so I can`t speak of them but it must be one awful depressing and painful disease. For all involved.

That's what I was thinking, that maybe they get this warped sense of security from keeping all that junk. Astrologically, I think that would go BEYOND any sign influence (even if technically there are some that save things for later...its never as bad as this). My Virgo Moon becomes depressed if there's clutter and during Nursing School that could accumulate fast so I had this psycho-need to throw things out almost every week (if I could. Damn instructors wanted us to save alot).

Well I have a Taurus Venus and I don't really like to throw away things that I am sentimental about.
But usually I take photos of -whatever it is- I have to throw away... and upload the pics - so I don't feel so bad lol
It's like as long as I have a digital copy of it.. it's all fine

Good thing about the times we live in - You can now *hoard* your online -space- wherever that is (be it a blog of photobucket)!!!
It's so much neater and the space feels endless.. so you can just keep on hoarding! lolll

i don't know the show, but this kind of fascinates me. have you heard of Collyer brothers? it's interesting but also poignant and tragic. they were technically killed by their own "garbage".

i remember when i was growing up, there was this house that was surrounded by piles and piles of dump. the guy picked out from garbage of others from the community and made a fortress out of them. i remember my mother being outraged because she threw away some private papers hidden inside the broken sewing machine, and it ended up in his yard. he was even on local TV as a peculiar "recycling" uncle. (if you call hoarding "recycle" )

well, however i noticed in the recent years, my mother may be suffering from a minor hoarding symptom. she doesn't keep nasties, but she is an impulsive shopper and buys things she does not need, and all these things are pouring out of all the storage places. when i told her she should throw them away or re-sell them, she would snap at me that she has use for them. she suffers from BPD and paranoia, so it's probably related.

I want to reply to each individually, but I'm supposed to be working.. shhhh..

I watched Grey Gardens. OH,, Oh, is what I gotta say about the Beales! I found Little Edie fascinating, so I had to look her up and she is a Scorpio sun, Leo Moon.
See, fixed. It's almost like a stubborn, I'm not gonna do it cause you say I should kinda thing.. but I do think there was some mental illness there too.

I'm scared to hoard online!! What if online goes away?? What if we have some kind of global failure and we have like a post apocolyptic world! Ahhh! I watch too many movies. I watched 'The Road' twice.
They had to eat bugs, nuff said about that.

My husbands's grandfather apparently had a form of hoarding too. But he was one that had to have things WITH him, as in right close to him! They say he carried a whole set of encyclopedias in his car, so that they would always be 'right there' if he should need to know something.
And, he always had a big duffle bad packed with stuff, they said he wouldn't even go to the bathroom without bringing it!
He ended up comitting suicide and the family said the clean up of his home took weeks, and they had to go through each and every PIECE of it, because he told them over and over that he would withdraw all his money into cash before he died and hide it throughout his stuff, because he knew that otherwise they would never take the time to go through any of it. And that is exactly what he did.

No I saw the original, it's on my TO BUY amazon list. Love it, they're so mad.

Hoarders are special cases, very lost in some way and they transfer feelings to objects. I don't understand it, I am the opposite too quick to throw something away cos it makes me crazy to see it sit there and not doing anything.
What I know of 2 hoarders, 1 of em approaching reality show craziness the other tame but still in the realm, one has moon taurus, sun conj jupiter, the other has sun conj venus and h9 stellium, both have pluto conj asc and tenanted h12.

"there's still a very high chance it will revert back into what it was."
---O yea, a lot of em can't stick to it. They hold onto things cos they think they don't have anyone/thing else. It's so limiting, but it's self imposed..

I can go along with this. They don't want to let go, the stuff fills in the empty spaces.
Not all people with fixed sign emphasis of course, or all people with pluto/sun/venus/uranus angular, etc. but I think it really ties into this in some way, I bet they'd all have a so called fixed planet conj an angle/in hard aspect to a luminary or a fixed sign in one of their big 3.
Maybe that is the continuum there..I have Pluto/IC, sun 8th, Sun hard aspect Uranus, Moon hard aspect Pluto and Leo asc, I will chuck it all away in a flash, so that is one extreme and then hoarding is on the other end.
I knew a Scorp Sun conj scorp asc lady with Moon in aqua and MANNNN her house was almost bare, not one object in that place was taking up unnecessary space and everything in there was placed with *complete* thoughtfulness and everything shopped for with complete thoughtfulness too, you could tell right away the huge amount of attn paid to the placement. Almost has a rigid zen like quality if that makes sense. Couldn't even see lil trash cans in there she always used plastic grocery bags when working on something and promptly threw them away in the big trash can in garage when finished.

Juni, I agree, the animal ones are a bit much.
I think though, sometimes the showing of it maybe pushes people into action?
Like if something is a thought in your mind.. "Aunt Sally is a hoarder, and she has too many cats," it's often easier to let that slip to the wayside instead of acting on it, but when it's brought to your attention, it's like BAM, right in your face.
I try to look at the positives in shows like this, and intervention, not so much
that people and their issues are being exploited,
but maybe (I hope, idealistic saggie thing) that someone may be helped by it.

I did see one about chickens that was terrible. And the woman was so mean, it was very difficult to feel compassionate towards her.

And then the other night the show was partially about a man hoarding rats, I
think they said they took over a thousand out of there. It was very sad.

Hi Lonake;
Good taste in amazon wish list, I was totally entraced with that documentary, they were fab, these ladies.

I just thought of five hoarders I know of:
#1- Aqua sun/ Leo Asc
#2- Aqua sun/ Scorp Asc
#3- Aqua sun/ Pisces Asc
#4- Aqua sun/ Cap asc
#5- Virgo sun/ Scorp Moon

Sorry I can't go in as deep into their astro as you, I lost all the data in my astro acct last year, so I'm building it back up again, and at this point going by memory only.
At any rate, I could see water playing a part in the sentimental type of hoarders.

I have a pic, this tub belongs to the Aqua sun/scorp asc hoarder:

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

My daughter was selling stuff at a flea market and she didn't have enough to fill the space, so this person offered this very large and deep tub full of unopened and unused electronics, because he had several more tubs with the same or similiar contents. Everything he buys, he buys two and three of. If there is a sale, he will buy even more.
It's to the point where when he wants something, he HAS to go and buy it because he can't find what he's looking for IN the hoard itself.
This is basically kept to his two garages and a full basement. But already two people have gotten hurt trying to get around piles and boxes. It's worrisome to me.

ETA: pay no mind to the date on the photo, my camera is stuck on that date, and I can't fix it. This photo was taken in June.

Leichen;
I'm sorry to hear about your Mom's condition.
May I ask a personal question? If you do not wish to answer, I won't take it personally.
Did your Mom grow up in poverty or in a large family in which nothing much was her very own, and also, do you know if her parents provided adequate affection to her?

I ask because the person I was speaking about with the pic above, grew up in a large family. They were pretty poor, and his mother was very un-affectionate.
I think his shopoholic-ness is directly linked to this things.

And thank you for the link on the Collyer brothers, I am going to watch that tonight.

they remind me very much of my aquarius 4th house/ neptune in 3rd family. they share the same inability to cope with the ups and downs. the beale's basically had an ice cream diet lol! so there's something there about needing comfort.

i think hoarders might have some water in them more than fixed. maybe even fixed water= scorpio but could be cancer/ pisces as well. attaching emotions to things.

i have an aspect myself that might make me hoard because of the fear of not being able to produce again (so iv read). just hafta fight that thought i guess but i acknowledge the fear is there.

weird my home computer is perpetually empty just like the way i want a house to be. no media. almost nothing but what it came with. i just have a habit of erasing stuff i guess. ack maybe i have an opposite compulsion! i use a planner instead of a BB and i tear out the pages when the day is past. maybe it's my scorp rising. i don't like leaving a trace. ugh totally useless in everyday life it's not like i work for the CIA or something.

Now you have me on a Beale's obsession Sand.

Why were they so broke, do you know?
And Edie never married, even after her Mother died? I wonder if she had any boyfriends.
I had to giggle when she was reading the horoscope book, and she said, "I keep falling for Sagittarius', and I'm not supposed to."

I FEEL YOUR PAIN EDIE, we fall for Scorpios, been there, done that.

the dad left i think, married another woman. that and a few ups and downs so when he died nothing much was left. big e never worked of course and lil e always dreamnt of being a star but never auditioned, or of marrying well. in the movie they had brothers wanting them to sell the house and live somewhere else. they were attached to the house itself.

i think she was very old when her mom died. maybe she wasn't as beautiful. i dunno. i think she suffered from hair loss that's why the cloth is wrapped around the head. i loled at the astro book too! plus she was harping on about libra men. also paranoid about the gardener.

fudge i have scorp asc-leo moon lol!
