Excellent, Ceri!

*Hugs, Doux* You're such a great person, I hope you see that!!

I have a great diet but still self-sabotage with food. Last night I binged on macrobiotic soup right before bed. I wonder if I am more addicted to guilt than anything...still finding the way to feeling an ongoing sense of entitlement to health. Travelling the same road as many who struggle this way.

Hey doux, why dont you try fasting? You don't have to fast as long as muslims do but I think it'll really help you lose weight and eat in moderation. See when muslims fast and then it's time to eat, they usually start with soup because it's not hard on the stomach and it fills them up, and they drink water. By the time they start with solid food, they'll eat very little because they'll be full. Try it, it'll really help you eat in moderation.

yup and it cleanses the body!

I think fasting is a good idea if you want to change your eating habits.

Once you're done with fasting you'll probably feel more liberated and less likely to pick up that bag of chips.

Thank you all, again.

I tried fasting, it didn't work very well - the cravings came back x100 stronger, and I started bingeing big time.

I'm just trying to eat less, right now.

Still not very healthy food but not in huge amounts.

This will take time and probably external help but I'll try to take better care of myself.

Doux, when you eat after fasting, start with a bowl of soup, it's kinda like water, it fills you up so by the time you start with the solid food you'll be almost full(if not full already). And one final thing, ALWAYS CHEW YOUR FOOD PROPERLY. When you eat fast and swallow the food immediately, your brain is still on hungry mode so you start stuffing yourself and after you're done(like 10 min after you're done eating), you'll feel really bloated and stuffed.

Try it, Try fasting and then when it's time to eat, drink water (That's the first thing you'll wanna do anyways) and after that, start with a bowl of soup. Believe me, starting with solid foods after fasting is bad because your stomach hasn't had food all day and it'll have a much harder time digesting solid foods and you'll get a tummy ache. Try it, what have you got to lose?

Thank you.

However I don´t think fasting is necessarily a good idea, if you have issues around eating.. Though for some people it can work well, for others it might end up being a disaster.

The clue is to find back to a normal eating behaviour, as you can`t be fastening for the rest of your lives (or don´t want to maybe).
That is something that needs to be re-learned; otherwise people will fall back into the binge eating trap after fastening.

However, fastening is very good for cleansin, making a clean cut and then start over, hopefully learning a better healthier way of eating. But the learn process has to take place, it doesn`t come automatically with fastening.

Interestingly, and I never would have thought before, I slipped into fastening for one to two days per week. Nothing I intended to, it just sort of evolved out of my weekly routine.

But for me this just happened after changing my eating behaviour. And was just natural part of an internal cleansing process.

I wouldn´t do fastening for a week or longer though, as I probably would slip in the OLD routines afterwards.

^^ ^^^ I don't agree with what you said. Look at this way, do you think every muslim who fasts does it so effortlessly? Some of the people in some countries like saudi arabia(where the obesity rate is extremely high) are FORCED to fast. I lived there at some point . Many people there are morbidly obese and yet they still fast EVERY ramadan(for 30 days) and have to go to school, uni or work everyday normally. Heck, school hours don't even become shorter. No exceptions are made.

Look, everyone has a problem with giving up food and water especially if they're fasting the way muslims do from 4 ish Am to 6 or 7 pm (depends on the time of the prayer). I mean that's really a long time and its extremely tough, especially when you have to work throughout the day (go to your job, school etc..) My point is that doux can try this out (maybe not fast for that long) it really does help control your eating habits. I know some morbidly obese people who fast the whole 30 days, I mean, it must be hell for these people. Fasting teaches you willpower to control what you eat. The point of fasting is to feel with poor people who don't have ANYTHING and who sometimes sleep without eating and to make you have more willpower over yourself and what you eat. It helps you appreciate the fact that you do not have to go to bed starving like some people. It makes you "eat to live" not "live to eat."

Anyway, doux is free to take my advice or not. I'm telling her this from experience. We can give doux reve advice from here until tomorrow and it won't anything unless she's willing to change her eating habit by putting effort into it and suffering a little.

Nothing comes easy and this applies to everything.

What happens after the fasting?
THAT was my point.

Fasting doesn´t teach you healthy eating; it provides an opportunity to "quit" for a while, make a clear cut, and yes it is AMAZING for cleansing, I totally agree on that.
But what happens afterwards?

The morbidly obese people stop suddenly being obese? Yes?
In general? Everyone?

not going to happen. Fasting can be a start, but it has to be accompanied with a conscious change in eating habit.

And btw Doux already stated that she has tried fasting before.

the thing is with this drug "food", you can`t just leave it away. You have to find a way to use it in moderate healthy ways.

What happens afterwards is that you stop feeling hungry at random hours because your body was able to tolerate staying without food or water for long hours. The point is that after you're done fasting, you can be able to control when you eat (ex. Time when you eat and in that way, you can adjust your food intake to whenever you want and it wont be as hard as it was when you used to feel hungry at random hours.) the problem with obese people is that most of them learn nothing after fasting. They think like " oh im done fasting now I can binge out again". Instead of realizing that now, they can control what they eat and when they eat.

The first couple of days after youre done fasting. When you go back to your normal eating habits, you get a lot of stomach aches because your body is no longer used to these types of foods at an early hour.

doux,

every path begins with the first step, so I think whatever you decide to change, it`s cool.
Noone can really give you advice (though we all are doing that), as it is a very personal journey you are embarking on.
and my way is right for me (as of now), but maybe a different approach will be right for you or anyone else.
I just want you to know that I am always going to listen, when you feel like it.

Just what I said. Exactly.

There is a reason people binge, and it actually doesn´t have to do with food that much.
Most obese people know they CAN control their eating. They just don´t do.
I don´t want to generalize though, there might be different reasons for that.

BTW Ami,
I also read "Feeding the hungry heart" quite a while ago. Very interesting read.

Doux, stop being down. You are not as powerless as you think. You dont need books, people, anyone to tell you when and what to eat. Your only problem is that you let all of this get to you and just vent about it. Instead of venting, do something about it! If youre as miserable as you say then get up, get paper and write down all of the foods youre eating that causing you problems and stick it on the wall or something, then adjust your meal time, nothing after 7 pm except for water. Look up healthy recipes online. There's tons of them. Then after that, Go to the gym! Believe me, when you go there and you see these people, you'll feel motivated to lose weight. When you're stressed, go take a walk or take dancing classes or whatever. Call people up and go somewhere. Look, i know its hard as hell. Ive been there too but honestly, its all about willpower FROM YOU. No amount of sympathy, hugs or advice from us is going to solve your problem. Only you can do that. Yes, external factors play a role, but so does how you see yourself. If you feel like you REALLY cant, then go to a dietician even though, i think dieticians are just for extreme cases. She wont magically make everything disappear, she'll just tell you to eat in moderation and tell you what kind of foods to eat( which most of them you already know). (K) please do something before it REALLY gets out of control.
