So I just got a little pleasant suprise when I opened my paycheck *sarcasm* ...... I found out that I had made less than half of what I was promised to make for pulling a 12 hour special assignment on Christmas Day. I was verbally promised that I would make 25$ an hour to work Christmas Day and they only payed me 11.88 per hour. Naturally I was enraged and called up both of my field supervisors and asked them "What the F*ck happened?" And they were all "oh well only certain sites were paying that rate" but they were the ones who had promised me that I would be making that much! So I went over their heads and called the district manager and he told me the exact same thing. I didn't even get an apology for this bullsh*t so I gave him a good verbal bashing. On top of this BS the company had deducted a big amount from all the employees pay checks because they had overpayed us on a few paychecks in November and December (just more incompetence) and of course they chose to deduct it all at one time at the first of January when everyone is feeling the burn from holiday spending. A lot of my co-workers have families, how in the hell will these a**holes sleep at night after pulling this nonsense? So after all the deductions my check was a whopping 72$ and I have bills to pay. On top of that I have the knowledge that I missed spending Christmas Day with my family and I didn't get a dime for it . I essentially rolled out bed at 4 am on Christmas morning, drove 40 miles, and worked for 12 hours. All for nothing! And didn't even get an apology for any of this! As you can imagine I'm just thrilled about this whole situation.... Anyways just wanted to vent about this.

I'm wondering if they really are incompetent fools or if they knowingly and willingly ripped your off which they planned out months ago (heck, maybe they've been doing this for years).

Sorry to hear of this. Too bad Randall doesn't have his law degree or I'm sure he'd represent you pro bono...lots of people get screwed over because they can't afford a good lawyer and people like your bosses know it.

Same thing happened to me when I was a Census Enumerator. I handed in my hours and they subtracted something like five hours from each sheet I handed in. It never amounted to the time I put into it. I just let it go but I wasn't thrilled, exactly. It's just one of those things in life.

That's terrible.

I"ve had similar experiences in the past. Unfortunately the people at the top don't care about the 'little guy' busting his ass for practically nothing. Even if you get up the courage to squawk and stand up for yourself, they will do their best to make your fight hell for you. They know most people are too exhaused and poor to do anything about it and even if they did, they usually have a powerful team of lawyers to deal with just that kind of thing. They know most won't want to bother putting up a fight, nevermind the money it would take to.

Are you going to stay at your job ag?

Absent a written agreement to the contrary, an oral promise in the workplace is enforceable. Factors the court will consider are: When there is no written statement regarding the time period worked, when the term is certain, when the person making the oral statement is in a position of authority to do so, when it is made in a formal setting, and when it is specific. A witness would solidify the case.

I don't think it is foul play on the part of my management, I really do think it is stupidity. I have really been noticing how stupid they are over the past month or so. They never know the answers to questions that people in charge should just know.My job field is funny because you are actually kind of working for your company and another company at the same time, it's largely a contractor business. The pay is based off the client you are working for so I could be making X amount for working for this client and be making Y amount the next day working for another client.

It's most likely not stupidity, as they most likely have their ***** covered and are playing dumb and giving people the run around. They are probably acting clueless knowing people will think they are and get off the phone with them more easily that way.

I would not be surprised if this whole scenario was orchestrated before the holidays. With them knowing the future complaints and backlash that would come beforehand and having a just 'play dumb' plan already prepared.

This type of thing is not uncommon in situations like these.

Aquaguy, the bottom line to them and every manager is money. They always look better when they can save the company money. It's how they end up getting promotions and raises, so they will do their best to cut corners whenever they can so their budgets come out looking as good as they can.

You should get organized in a worker's union. Their practices are illegal. I would start writing letters to people. Anyone really. There are so many things you can do. Get your co-workers organized and get them to co-sign statements. Do a protest. And then let the district office know. Hehehehehe... They'll be too concerned about their reputation to refuse you. That's what I would do.

Also, they can't deduct pay from your paycheck. Whatever money you have received "in good faith" is yours. At least that's how it works in most places. You should check your state laws. They also cannot change your pay after they have promised you a certain rate. That is illegal anywhere.

Don't be a victim and let them step on you.
