First, there is no such thing as "severe BPD". It is or isn't, what differs is how well the individual functions in spite of the condition.The core of BPD, in my opinion, is both an over-sensitivity to, and inability to manage, emotions. All other criteria are generated by this. You have both high-functioning and low-functioning individuals with this diagnosis. Bang goes the stereotype.
ALL can recover with effective, timely, and patient psychology. What the individual lacks are coping skills - no different from a crisis in the life of someone with, say, depression, or anxiety.
Pharmacological treatments can often make matters ten times worse, as the individual NEEDS their emotions in order to develop coping skills.
Medication-use could be one of the main reasons this condition has been termed "treatment-resistant". But hey, the pills keep people quiet, for a while, and make a pretty penny for the industry.
But, we already knew that, right?
