Poseidon is the god of the sea and earthquakes, brother of Zeus and Hera, roman counterpart is Neptune.According to some stories, Poseidon was not swallowed by his father, Cronus, like his other brothers and sisters but instead was birthed in a flock of sheep and Rhea gave Cronus a lamp to swallow, similar to how Rhea saved Zeus.
There once was a competition between Poseidon and Athena to become the patron of a city in Greece. The game was to give the people of the land the best gift. Poseidon gave them water, but it was salty and useless. Athena gave them an olive tree, which provided them with wine, wood, oil, and food. Afterwards the city was named Athens and they accepted Athena as their patron. Poseidon was furious at his loss, so he flooded the Attic Plain. The depression made by Poseidon's trident, which was filled with salt water, was surrounded by the northern hall of the Erechtheum and remained open to the air.
Just like Zeus, Poseidon had many consorts, some water nymphs and some human. There was one human woman that he desired deeply named Tyro but Tyro loved a human man, Enipeus. Tyro had continually pursued Enipeus, but he refused her every time. One day Poseidon disguised himself as Enipeus and from their union she gave birth to twin heros, Pelias and Neleus. Poseidon was the father of many other known heros as well such as Theseus.
Poseidon had also pursued Demeter. She rejected him and turned herself into a mare to hide among a herd of horses. He saw through it and turned himself into a stallion to capture and mate with her. Demeter then gave birth to a horse that could talk named Arion.
Poseidon also had sex with Medusa on the floor of a temple dedicated to Athena. Medusa was then changed into the snake headed monster by Athena. When she was later beheaded by the hero Perseus, Chrysaor and Pegasus emerged from her neck, who were said to be his sons.
