316201 Malala

quote:
Asteroid named after Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai

By Michael Casey CBS News April 10, 2015, 7:07 PM

She's survived an assassination attempt and won a Nobel Prize. Now, 17-year-old activist Malala Yousafzai is getting an asteroid named after her.

Asteroid "316201 Malala" was named Friday after Yousafzai, said Don Yeomans, a member of the International Astronomical Union Committee on Small Bodies Nomenclature.

Discovered in 2010, the asteroid is located in the Main Belt between Mars and Jupiter. Orbiting the sun every five-and-a-half years, it is about 4 kilometers in diameter. Its surface is very dark, the color of printer toner.

Amy Mainzer, an astronomer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, who discovered the asteroid, wrote on the Malala Fund blog that she decided to name the asteroid for Malala after her postdoctoral student Carrie Nugent brought to her attention that "few have been named in honor of the contributions of women and particularly women of color."

"Carrie and I read about Malala's amazing story and thought that if anyone deserves to have an asteroid named after them, she does," Mainzer wrote.

Yousafzai was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize alongside children's rights activist Kailash Satyarthi of India in December 2014, making her the youngest person to receive the award.

She drew the attention of the world after being shot by Taliban gunmen in 2012. The group had targeted her after she became a symbol of resistance to the Taliban's attempts to curtail education for girls in Pakistan's Swat Valley.

Hooray for the young lady Malala Yousafzai.I remember the event and the feeling around the world. Yes there were toolmakers at work, but they failed.

I like the post. Bless you Faith for sharing.
The HNN of this asteroid is in the 1rst degree of aries.
The chart shows Mercury at 16 Leo which is the HSN of 6583 Destinn and Neptune was at the Node of Pholus.
But so many asteroids have waited far more than 4 years for a name. What of their plight.
Who speaks for them?

Thanks, Seimei, I'm glad you like this.

I guess some of the greatest acts of heroism go completely unacknowledged. Heroes aren't in it for the fame, anyway. Sometimes it happens, and then we're lucky to see what people are capable of.

Consider the unnamed asteroids, Asteroids of the Unknown Heroes?

Astro.com is glitching for me or I'd know by now, where my Malala is....

Oops I think I read this wrong:

What of the plight of the asteroids? Poor unnamed asteroids? I don't know

Helio NN? Can you tell me what the special significance of that is?

Confused again

Are you a member of MENSA? These links feel like riddles that I don't understand.

Thanks, though, for an alternative to astro.com.

Now I see that Malala is transiting at 0 Pisces (as you said) and my Malala is at 14.00 Sag, so conjunct Neptune, trine Jupiter with 2.01 orb, opposing Mars with same orb.

Also conjunct my Aphrodite but that's mixing apples and oranges...

Merry Christmas, Seimei.

simply showing you
a) when astro.com is glitching on you
they are not the only game in town for info
b) if your Mars is at H.node of Venus and Perihelion of Mercury than you Mars IS STRONG
and connected to mercury and Venus potently.
info YOU won't get at astro

Thanks

Edit: Now I get it.

So on the day I was born, Venus' Helio NN was at 16 Gemini, Mercury's Perihelion was at 16 Gemini. And my tropical Mars is 16 Gemini.

EDIT: Can't tell how long the nodes are constant, in helio.

Guess I have a lot to learn.

I forgot to mention above, that I located Malala in transit and my chart, using true-node.com. Just didn't comprehend the HNN stuff.

Nodes barely move
example Jupiter 40 minutes in 65 years
perihelion and aphelion move a little more> 70 minutes over those same 40 years.

perihelion/aphelion of some asteroids float or swing but generally say in the same few degrees, like anytime you see 16 leo and aq those of nodes of destinn, but perihelion/aphelion moved from 19ge04 to 21ge
but did not maintain a constant forward motion.
You in your case integrate the meaning of a Mercury and Venus conjunction into your mars, it makes it more powerful
Guess I have a lot to learn.

@Seimei ~ Thanks so much. I started researching planetary nodes last night, and it's super interesting. I enjoyed this essay:

Orbital Astrology and the Nodes by Dane Rudhyar

Do you interpret conjunctions to the planetary nodes the same way as regular conjunctions?

So I seem to have a Mars-Mercury-Venus stellium?

@Elysia

Thanks

I wonder what the meaning of the asteroid is. Perhaps it represents how we take a stand for education? I'd like to say it signifies great courage, but everyone has this asteroid, and not everyone has great courage. Or even the harsh conditions that reveal it.

a question I cannot answer,,, not enough observation yet

Thanks for the Dane Rudhyar link, I have not read that in many years.

I suggest sticky notes of the HNN of the planets and all asteroids you like to use.

Faith,

Yeah, I suppose it'd have more to do with how you feel about / will take action about education.

But, I was curious. When they name these ateroids, do they do any prior research? Wouldn't the asteroids have an energy/vibe of their own, irrespective of what we attribute them to?

For instance, what if the asteroid they named after Malala actually harbours Kurt Cobain-ish energy? Or something else abstract, like what if it symbolizes how an individual relates to/ is active towards his environment on a day-to-day basis (do we already have an asteroid for that)? How does the energy of the asteroid manifest as what (or whom) we humans have labelled it for?

I know the question sounds weird and probably downright silly, but it's what I've been wondering..

I think asteroid astrology is predicated on the belief that there are no accidents. That everything is interwoven...so the names that arise are always an embodiment of all human and astronomical conditions intermingling at that time.

It's pretty strange and far out...maybe the galaxy is one giant mind and astrological connections are the synapses firing between the core components (planets and asteroids) and cells (living creatures.)

Or maybe asteroid astrology is the exaltation of coincidence, and the joke's on us.

Edit ^^ But I don't really think so...I'd have a hard time believing that at this point.

Thanks for the response, Faith.

What are you referring to when you say you don't really think so? That there are no accidents or that there are too many coincidences?

I can't believe it's just coincidences.

Well for instance the day I got married:

My pr Juno 17.56 Virgo
Husband's pr sun 17.56 Virgo

Dismiss as coincidence?

There have been too many things, too close to the expected meaning, for me to shake off.

Sometimes the asteroids appear to fall willy-nilly in the charts, and that makes me scratch my head. But maybe the meaning is supposed to come later.

In this case I was kind of disappointed that Malala's asteroid was not strikingly aspected in her chart...but for all we know, it falls on her ASC.

And to inch closer back on topic:

If Malala stands for our educational values, and mine is conjunct Sag Neptune, that makes sense, since the #1 thing I'd have my children learn is altruism towards people from all walks of life. I'm happy they can chat with people around the globe via computer. My daughter is virtual friends with a little Serbian boy. I think it's amazing. But of course, Neptune can always backfire and sometimes I find the digital age and our educational system all crazy and confusing beyond comprehension.

Well thanks for letting me talk your ear off.

Where is your Malala? what are your thoughts on education?

Posing that question to all.

Faith,

Not at all, thanks for the reply!

I see, the meanings construct themselves over time, we just have to be alert to them.

It's great that you instill those values in your children. It's one of the things that truly scares me when I see the amount of brutality and outright cruelty around. How does one teach kids to be, above all, good human beings, and be humane with each other...? It's scary - what if when I'm a mum, I won't be able to make them understand this core value?

Oops, tangent!

Okay, back to Malala. My thoughts on education - oh, don't get me started. At this point in time, it's a rather touchy subject with me. Anyway, *fingers crossed*. Suffice it to say, that I revere it.

If I can bring myself to look at that placement and what it portends, I shall report back.

Hi Elysia,

I'm not out of the woods yet, my children are still learning and who knows what the outcome will be.

Yes please - especially since you revere education, I hope you'll find Malala and report back. If you're up for it.

Faith,

I checked - my Malala is at 8 Scorpio, widely conjunct my Mars (7° orb) and Mercury (4°). Also, a wide square to Saturn. *cough*

The Mars conjunction makes sense, coz I do take a lot of action, and have to fight for my education (higher education: grad school, I mean). And the Saturn square symbolizes the delay therein.

Also: Exactly sextile Venus & Jupiter (0°). I did have luck, so far. Perhaps it was Jupiter that offset a lot of financial (and other) hurdles that would have made even high school and a bachelor's degree well nigh impossible.

Not sure how to interpret the Mercury conjunction; but since Mercury represents our mind - that's a good one, I suppose.
Thoughts?
