I have a few tips to contribute
I have a friend as a Naturopath which is rather handy, and I never forget what she tells me.

If you go to the gym and love to sweat it out, this will make you sweat all the impurities out, or if you purely love to sweat heaps. Just:
Boil a litre of water with some chopped up fresh chunky ginger root for 15 minutes. Let cool, and strain. Pour into a drinking bottle with a splash of fresh lemon to taste. I have tried this myself and you really have to drink it literally before you start your exercise but you sweat like a piglet.

Another is for nasty sun burns and you know your going to peel, and you skin feels terribly dry. Get your hands on pure Vitamin E oil, I get them in capsules that I break open. Rub all over burn areas and you wont peel and leaves you with a nice tan. Or just dont sun bake. And I once burnt my foot as a child with boiling water I tipped from the stove and my nana put Vitamin E oil on it everyday and I didnt scare.

Aloe Vera is one of my favourites for any skin irrations, rashes, insect bits, burns, grazes, cuts, pimples and dry skin. I have two huge plants at home that I use for almost everything skin related and works like a charm.

Chamomile tea is the best natural remedy in my experience for menstral pain, need a lot but it calms all muscles and Im in bliss. And it sends me to sleep.

My grandfather had an infection he couldnt fight off, seemed like he was immune to antibiotics. So he was given lots and lots of garlic, garlic is a natural antibiotic and funny enough it worked. So I eat heaps of garlic, and lots of parsely to counteract the effect of the stink and Ive noticed I dont get coughs, or colds anymore.

I get dry cuticles under my finger nails, so I thought about it and started rubbing olive oil on my cuticles everynight and now they are beautiful, soft and supple.

I sometimes use olive oil on the ends of my hair, about an inch up. because of dry, split ends and it gives them a shiny, healthy appearance. Does it good too. Not too much though, just rub a drop into your fingers and whipe through tips of hair.

If you suffer from asthma, onions are good for your respiratory system. And chilli is fantabulas too.

Thats all for now, sheesh! Hope it helps some one...

I read here that Yarrow Root is good for keeping hair black. How can I use it because now my hair has started getting grey.

The Legend

Long ago, old Mr. He became lost in the forest. Years later, those who found him were astonished. The old man's hair had turned from white to black. In order to sustain himself, he lived on the root of the common wild vine Polygoni Multiflori.

He Shou Wu also known as Fo Ti

Today, the plant bears his name, He Shou Wu (Old Mr. He). In the West this root is known as He Shou Wu or Fo Ti. This herb when ingested helps restore color to grey hair and halt hair loss. The Chinese have long relied on the he shou wu tonic, taking it long-term to encourage optimum health. For many people it enhances the growth and color of hair as it restores the thick, rich-bodied hair they had in their younger days. Gray hair gradually returns to its original color.

You can get it relatively inexpensively at GNC as Fo Ti. It will be in the herb section.

I've found that Mr. "Good Vibrations" is my best friend during that painful time of the month. Fun and works faster than Tylenol!

for a wonderful hair tonic:
leave in for a few minutes and then rinse your hair out after shampooing and conditioning with a solution of ORGANIC apple-cider vinegar (with the 'mother' in it) and water mixed in equal quantities.
Your hair will smell kind of weird for a day or two, but you REALLY see results! Hair gets softer and silkier, more managable, shinier and doesn't tangle much afterwards. I think it removes all the residue buildup or something, and is supposed to be good for your hair cause it is slightly acidic.

For pimples and skin disorders, I use something called Fuller's Earth, which you use as a kind of mud pack. I get it at an indian store nearby, where it is called 'Multani Mati'. It makes your skin very soft and helps clear blemishes, but it also really dries out your skin if used by itself and mixed with water to make the pac. I always add a few drops of almond or olive oil to the mix (when I am making it) with very good results. (Still use some water though.) It doesn't get as pasty and easy to spread with the oil, but the results are much better.

Pure Cocoa Butter directly on the skin does wonders for wrinkles, dry skin and any other kind of skin ailment. If you have skin like mine though, which is very sensitive, it's best not to use cocoa butter on the face directly as it can cause breakouts. You can get sticks of these at Riteaid or any other pharmacy for a couple of dollars.

That's all I can think of right now.
Does anyone know what to do for ingrown hairs after waxing or shaving?

I realize when I post on these threads, how different my advice is from everyone elses, generally. I am big on home remedies as well, but for instance, i'd rather put something smell-pretty and pleasent on my body... The treatment need not be as awful as the ailment, you know? ( I am thinking of hearing that for hair loss, rub a freshly cut onion on your scalp..... ewwww, stinky stinky.. bad enough the scent comes out of my pores, you know?)
I am going to suggest, for ingrown hair, that you exfoliate ( natural) use scrubs on the body, varying degrees of grit, but on the face, only microspheres... small sherical bits.. usually silica or the company's own technology. Also, AHA's ( also natural- derived from Milk ~think lactic acid~ ,fruit ~think ascorbic acid and citrus~ ,sugars, etc..) The skin has a slightly acidic pH and needs to be treated with an acid as well, to maintain it's vibrancy and clarity. Also to penetrate beyond the 'horny' layer (heehee) of dead skin. Ingrown hairs are follicles which are blocked, so the hair is forced to grow inward. The hairs go through growth changes, and at any given time on anywhere on your body, due to normal cycles or damage from waxing- it makes the hair growth sparce and not as strong, doesn't propell it beyond the follicle as it should- you get this ingrown effect. Exfoliate and then use a slightly acidic moisturizer. Lactic acid's molecule is larger than other glycolics, but on the body, it can help. Look for products containig larger amounts of AHA's for use on the body. The face can tolerate the same, but needs to be acquired, or you risk sensitivity. If ingrowns are a real problem, address the tightness of your clothes, where they rub/ the amount of moisturizing you need/ the method of depillating hair etc. Your doctor can let you know about NeoStrata, a clinical product in US, but over the counter in Canada ( for most products) Talk to your cosmetician/dermatologist/doctor, research it on the web.
I am a good cosmetician, have schooling and try to remain current with seminars, etc. But I don't think we are ALL good. Or ask me, and I will research it for you to the best of my abilities as well.
Nature and technological advances are good things together.. we can learn a great deal from both.

Fuller's Earth is also cat litter. Actually the best cat litter !

Only just discovered this thread. I don't have many beauty tips, I mainly clean my face day and night with Witch. I never use moisturizer as my skin is already oily enough. I did use baby oil on my very dry legs once and had a reaction that lasted weeks ! It was very bad.

I have tips for a cold. Have a really hot bath and stay there as long as you can handle it. Sweat as much as you can !! When you get out try and keep your body hot for as long as possible. I have never had a cold lasting longer than 48 hours.

Stay out of the sun too ! Tans do look good, but they can be addictive too. I sunbathe very rarely, and rarely go out when the sky isn't black :0) I'm nocturnal :0)

Have a face pack about once a week. I find that seaweed is best for me. Try a load and see what is good for you, plus: fun !! Also apply a deep conditioner about once a week. I leave both on for about an hour and allow my hair to dry naturally. To be honest, my hair could be a lot better !

That's about it. I have crap tips !

LOL! Fuller's earth for Cat litter!!?!? That's amazing! Come to think of it, that makes sense, because it absorbs moisture really well, so I guess it would absorb... ummmm.... other stuff really well too...
I get mine in little boxes that show a woman applying the stuff to her face, so hopefully they're not selling me cat litter!!!

Thanks for the tips on dealing with ingrown hairs, PixelPixie
I generally exfoliate in the shower every day, but I still end up with them on my legs!!! And I don't wear tight clothing or anything! Very very odd. Meh, I guess I'm just unlucky.

Wow this is a GREAT thread. Hope no one minds im bringing it back up.

Alchemist, you asked about ingrowns (after) i have a secret I got from a friend who's a Dancer.
Deoderant ... she used the deoderant on her legs, arms and *ahem* private areas. After shaving ... she swears by it ... I actually gave it a shot and it truely does work. I apply it alot during the first 24 hours (espcially in the bikini zone) I only use it when I know i am gonna be in a bathing suit!!! ohhh, dont know if it matters or not, but I used a clear solid ... i use dove. Which also has moisterizers in it. Funny that someone mentioned applying deoderant to the face in humid areas. Never thought of that, but it does make sense.

I love all these... gonna have ta try some of these out ... especailly the dry skin, need ot get it all purdied from summer.

"goes home roots thru fridge and kitchen cabinets. Gathers all together and locks herself in the bathroom for countless hours of *purdyin myself up* "

very kewl....

Do you mean 'deodorant' or 'anti-perspirant'?

Anti-perspirant blocks the pores... some people believe it is linked with increased breast cancer.. but that is an entire new thread right there, (and one I am not educated enough to contribute to)
Deodorant is a topical 'deodorant'. Literally, all it is is strong scent, applied in a base that fixes it to the skin where you are applying it.
Which is why I would worry about putting anti-perspirant in the bikini area, as the pores there are of a different type ( there are apocrine, and eccrine glands, hormonal versus sweat) The chemistry is varied in the body, and I don't profess to know all... but I don't think I will be blocking my pores in an area I love so much.

I find it hard to believe that if you go to a drugstore deodorant aisle, men will have the option of deodorant versus anti-perspirant, whereas women have no such option ( unless you rely on the 'natural' types)
What if I want to sweat?

WOW! honestly I really didnt know all that. The anti-perspirant makes snese though .... anti-sweat! ...

Mmaybe when she said deodorant, she meant exactly that .... since deodorant wouldn't block the pores like the ani-perspirant would! hmmm, ....

I can say that I did use the dove anitperspirant / doedorant and it did work ... maybe its less anti-perspirant and more deodorant .... hmmm who knows!

I read through this thread last evening while I was on messenger with someone. I enjoyed it--don't usually read all of the long ones.
Anyway, though I haven't tried it yet, I came across something that said sage is an antiperspirant and a deodorant. Perhaps the essential oil could be mixed with another kind of oil...and a little dab would do ya.
I use Mountain Ocean Skin Trip Coconut moisturizer. It doesn't have mineral oil in it. I got to the point where I just couldn't tolerate anything with mineral oil in it. It's derived from petroleum, you know? Anyway, I get that at the Vitamin Trader at $7.49 a 8 1/2 oz. bottle.
I've also used unrefined coconut oil...but it's kind of greasy. If you shower and put it all over your body...then put on cotton jammies and socks...it's an excellent moisturizer. It is sold at natural food markets and some vitamin stores. And it is really good to use to condition your hair too...but do it the day before you have a day off...cause it takes a couple of shampoos to get it out. It's wonderful to put in some lavender essential oil...it really relaxes you.
You can cook with coconut oil...even though it is considered a saturated fat...it doesn't work on your body like other saturated fats...it has health properties and makes really good popcorn. (You can't taste the coconut flavor on it.)
I used Desert Tree Tea Tree oil to heal this patch of excema that I get on my stomach every winter. Tea Tree oil really helps you to chill out. It feels great! I've been wanting to get some jojoba oil to mix the tea tree oil in with and just rub it all over when I need to chill. I read that jojoba oil is the one closest to human sebum. (That's related to skin, not the other stuff.)
Anyway, does anyone know of anything natural you can use as a sunscreen....not something already mixed and sold commercially....there must be something?

If you are concerned with chemical sunscreens .. now they have formulas that are physical barriers..
but it is micronized zinc, therefore you can't see it on your skin..
The problem with physical barriers is that traditionally you can see them ( like those zinc sticks you swipe on your nose and cheeks on the beach.)
If you don't want to use the chemical, try the micronized physical.. it is iomportant to use a broad spectrum.. against UVA UVB and UVC rays.
And reapply often. Daily, whether there is visible sun or not.
Bottom line though, wear a hat, don't 'tan'.. protect you skin, wear fabrics which are tightly knit ( and apply sunscreen to the areas you aren't exposing .. like put on a moisturiser with antioxident properties and sun protection before you dress, no matter what, on your entire body.)
