Does anyone here do yoga? I wanted to ask those who do firsthand what benefits they've known of...I never know how truthful internet articles are haha. I've been thinking of trying it out myself since I seem to need to balance out my state of mind...nothing like tension, stress, anxiety, and depression all at once! And soreness thanks to that and the cold. I can't seem to bring myself to do rigorous exercise right now. THe articles I've read make it sound like a cure-all...so now I'm curious if it'll even touch on everything I said above, plus insomnia, and muscle toning. Hmm!

I do yoga! And I feel better for doing it too. It makes me feel relaxed and releases tension from my head, back and neck. Once i had a really bad stress headache after work and wasnt sure if I should go or not, but my friend persuaded me, and afterwards, my headache had disappeared, my neck stopped hurting and I felt in a much better mood! All that stretching and breathing works wonders!

One thing it does is it gets your digestive system moving so I always feel a bit bloated a couple of days after but then I am OK.

I love yoga!!! the problem for me is motivation. the times when I probably need it the most I feel the laziest! It's also good for getting energized when you're feeling sluggish.....

moonshine, you do know not to eat for a few hours beforehand? wondering if that might contribute to the bloatedness.

VTT, the book I just got I like alot because the way its set up makes it easy to use while you're actually practicing - its called "YOGA Your Way: Customizing Your
Home Practice" by Cindy Dollar & Susanna MacKenzie Euston. As the title implies, makes it so you pick out exactly the session you need according to whether you need a pick-me-up, relaxation, restoring or opening poses, time allotments and body areas you want to emphasize. There is so many good books out there, though, just thought this was the most convenient to use.

The beauty of Yoga to me is that you can make it as strenuous or relaxing as you want, and as it seems to hit all the muscle groups with emphasis on balance, such a well-rounded excercise, with built-in meditation!!! Plus it doesn't have to cost a dime, can be done most anywhere with a minimum of equipment!! Try it, you'll love it!!!!

I've never stuck with it long enough to talk about long-term benefits - but who can say? Usually when I'm in a more 'up' cycle I tend to eat better, do yoga, think better thoughts, the trouble with some of these types of things is the results are immeasurable - how'm I to know what kind of illnesses I would have had if I hadn't or how much worse the ailments I do have? Preventative actions are like that.

I do know that after regular practice within a few weeks I feel more supple, at home in my body - not cringing when faced with picking up something heavy or reaching something up high cause I know my balance and strength and agility is there. Which leads to a sense of confidence and achievement. Sleep is definately better if you're plagued with muscle aches and just from having exercised in such a peaceful manner.

Oh yes, yoga makes you sleep really deep!!

Delerious, I'm usually careful to not eat much before yoga - I only have lunch and then I go to class after work, so thats about 3-4 hours later. I think I just have a sensitive tummy! At least I've never farted in class, lol!!!

Yay! All the replies inspired me to skip over to the library and find a yoga book . This one is just called Yoga Rx, which I think is cool because it narrows down yoga moves to ailments, sort of like the book you mentioned delerious . Haha I'm so glad I posted on here asking about it too because I didn't know about the digestive stuff! I like hearing that it makes you sleep deeply, I need that. LOL @ the farting in class!! Omg...it reminds me of this show i saw on TV once...Trigger Happy TV, and the guy on there goes around bothering random people and one time he goes into a yoga class and starts farting...oh mannn!!

Yoga will change your life.....it changed mine forever, without it i would have horrible back/neck pain from my car accident....yoga isn't just physical postures either, yoga is "the way," it includes diet, conduct, meditation, prayer, and other aspects as well. (still working on the conduct part) Yoga is about control but also about letting go completely and utterly, it carves out a path to enlightenment, or at least to a better life.

A friend of mine teaches Yoga.
His name is Nick, and, for the longest time, he was considered the "Omega" of our little wolf-pack of friends, affectionately referred to (though not by me) as "baby prick". Nick rode his bike into a telephone pole one day and messed his back up pretty bad. For the next few months he was pretty-much in constant agony. Then he discovered Yoga.
In approx. a year's time, he went from being the biggest pothead around, to teaching Yoga classes in Boston.
He's literally a changed man.
