We have a BIG problem w/skeeters this year, for whatever reason. They are thick and everywhere. I thought at first it was bad here due to the fact that our neighbor jsut moved a old trailer outta the woods that had been there for year. But no matter where we go thay are bad and fierce this year. We went into Anchorage the other day (about 45 miles from here) and they are horrible there as well. Not just your average 3 or 4 around you. You literally gotta fight em off. so my quesiton being, is there any remedy for them thats safe. My dog is being eaten alive and its really affecting her. I dont want her to suffer from these nuisances. When i bring her in from outside, after jsut a piddle in the yard (i dont tie her up outside otherwise, shes indoors) i lieterally have to wipe 15 of em off of her head before she comes inside. Which of course she thanks me for by liking my face and then begins to roll her face all over the floor, sweeping it side to side for a good scratch. Poor thing i feel so bad for her, cause i know her frustration. I dont wanna buy regular bug spray to put on her as i know its not healthy for them in any way. Got any ideas/secrets to share???? *edit: oops just realized i spelled mosquito wrong!! IP: Logged |

We have a TON of Skeeters here also! I have read that feeding your pet Garlic helps keep them away. Also marigolds are suppose to be an insect repellent. I dont think Praying Mantis' live in Alaska, but I put 3 egg sacks I found in my bushes. I have a bunch of little mantis' in the bushes and they are suppose to LOVE to eat skeeters. Try to make sure there is no standing water around for them to breed in. Hope that helps. May be you can dust her with garlic powder. I will be checking back to see what other good ideas are out there. IP: Logged |

Try rubbing lemon juice on her coat. Or shampooing her with beer. ------------------ "There is no use trying," said Alice; "one can't believe impossible things." Excellent suggestions! When you include a little Brewer's Yeast in an animal's food, it repels fleas. It may help do the same to mosquitos. IP: Logged |

Wow thanks guys! i'll try some of these. BM, we only have praying manti's in pet shops. They are not native to our state and will not survive in the wild with our temps. From what i know, they need consistent hot weather (75+) to survive and also for the youngin's to hatch. We dont have consistent enough temps for that. But boy would that be a good option. Funny thing is, they are effective in eating skeeters, but thats only because they are known to eat anything in site.lol. lil pigs!! lol. Garlic though, thats interesting. I remember the hunters talking about that. While some say it work and worked well, other guys said it didnt do anything for them. lol. all in the bodys own make-up i guess. I'll look in to that for her though! Thanks!! Randall - I remember seeing something for us to use regarding lemon juice it makes sense to roll it over and start using it on the animals too with no harm. and BEER???? really. This one i havent heard. Is that due to the yeast content maybe? (sneaking ahead and reading trill's post )Thank ya!! Trillian - those were great suggestings weren't they. I was actually surprised to see the replys, usually it takes a few attempts - lol. The brewers yeast makes sense, esp. with Randall talking about Beer. But you talk about adding it to the food while randall talks about washing her with beer. Would it be better to introduce it in her food than on her coat (shes so sily soft) I dont want people to think i got a drunk dog being as she'd smell like beer. Although. maybe i could find a flavored beer, like strawberry and then she'd smell pretty! LOL No, seriously though, which route would be best. I'm thinking thru the food, but i may be wrong!! Thanks Trillian! Thanks GUYS/GALS alot of neato suggestions ... I'm gonna feel like im in an episode of "Myth Busters" testing these out! lol. i've got a couple posts out on other websites, but havent checked them as of this morning. I'll chekc those and if theres anything on there, that isnt here, i'll post em!! ang- IP: Logged |

What about tea tree oil or citronella? *although I know the latter can be somewhat sensitizing to skinIP: Logged |

Citronella essential oil is a good repellant, and I've heard that products with DEET in are effective--I don't know if there is any risk with those. I think I would burn citronella candles and put some oil on me and and on the dog. A lot of people have touted Avon's "Skin So Soft" as a good insect repellant too. IP: Logged |

I heard that they don t like vinegar at all. Also keeping a basilic plant in the house will keep them away. IP: Logged |
