Last Monday I visited my dentist (it had been five years since i was last in to see him) I had a broken tooth on the lower left and a possible root canal on my far back lower left molar. At the same time i had some root plaining done on my whole left side. The hygenist shoots me up with the numbing agent (not sure which kind it was) and i immediatly feel a, what i'm calling, a bolf of electricity run straight thru my tongue out the tip. It hurt so bad. And i could only imagine what it woulda felt like had i not been a lil numb already. So she asks if i just felt some tingling on my tongue. I told her, "If you wanna call it that, felt more like electricity running thru my tongue." She tells me that she musta hit the lingual nerve and also made the comment "that never fails with me" talking about herself. Honestly i didnt think anything of it. I remained in the dentist office for a total of 2 1/2 hours. By the time i was driving home the feeling was coming back. By bedtime, most all feeling had returned except on the left side of my tongue. I went to bed only to awake the next morning and the left side was still completely numb. I thought back to her hitting the lingual nerve and thought, Okay this may take a day or so to get outta my system or whatever. Wednesday rolled around and nothing had improved. I called my dentist, he was busy so i spoke with the lady at the front desk who "assured" me this was normal in some people and that it can take up to 2 weeks to recover. I explained that of all the dentist visits i'd been to, i've never experienced this before. I asked if it may be related to the hygenist hitting the lingual nerve. She told me it was a possibility, but again, this is all normal. I was instructed to call again on Friday if they got any worse. So friday rolls around, and im exactly the same, no better, but thank god, no worse. I call in and again she assures me this is normal and gives me the docs home number to call if it gets any worse or i have pain. My tongue feels as if the very tip has been badly burned on a hot cup of liquid. It feels fat. I cant hear a difference when i talk. I told my dad about it and he asked "Is that why you sound like your sluring?" ... so others notice it as well. Everything in my mouth on the left side is extremely cold sensitive. Its literally driving me banana's. Its not a completly numb feeling but more of a feeling of the numbing agent wearing off ... although the back portion feels completly numb, like i could swallow my tongue if im not careful.

I dont know what to do. I ran a search on the net about Lingual Nerve Damamge. And theres conflicting information out there on it. Some peoples nerves have been severed by the needle and they go on living with out any feeling on the tongue or taste!!! Which is driving me nuts. Food doesnt taste good. Its got almost no taste to me at all. I have the taste of metal in my mouth, which some say could be the fillings (almalgam - i dont have the money for the white ones) or an infection of the nerve. Also conflicting is ... i've read that the dentist/hygenist is trained to hit that nerve, while others have said NO, they are trained to get hit in the general area of the nerve, but cautioned to not hit the nerve.

Anyone know of this happening to anyone? Is there anything i can do to help speed up this healing process??? Im at a loss as what to do. But i need to do something. Esp with food not tasting as good, i am liable to loose weight and become unhealthy.

HELP!!!

Ang~

Oh hon, that sucks!
Love and light to you.. the only thing I can really do, as I have no information...
I hope this goes away soon.
Your body is a marvel, believe that it will heal, and it will most likely take less time than they predict.

Awww Thanks Pix for the warm love and light!! It means alot, really! I'll take and do anything i can to heal this annoyance faster.

This is just crappy. I made cinnamon rolls last night and only ate half of one - it just wasnt the same not being able to taste them.

I have to call the dentist this morning again and let them know i am still somewhat numb. Its so annoying because its not comepltetly numb, but more of a tingle feeling, like when the novacaine begins to wear off. Arrggghhh! So i have a lil bit of feeling and the back portion of my tongue feels so raw.

Anyways ... thanks again for your kind words and the warm rays of light and love.

ang-

EDIT: I called the office and they want me to come in tomorrow to check me out and the doc wants to talk a lil bit with me.
