Has anyone experienced sharp ear pain while flying...taking off or landing due to allergies or sinus congestion or infection? What have you done to stop/prevent this from happening? Last time I was flying I was in tremendous pain (while landing due to the change in air pressure and sinus problems). Ever since my ear drums have been pressured in and I havent been able to get it balanced. My family doctor wasnt any help...the only solution he had was to take sinus/allergy meds or get surgery. Ive been taking sinus/allergy meds for a few years now. I also saw a ear/nose/throat specialist in Toronto who checked my hearing out...which was fine, and my sinuses...He didnt recommend anything except the regular over the counter stuff. Im just paranoid that I will encounter the same pain again and that it might ruin my trip for a few days. I remember that happened last time. Anyone have any experiences or suggestions they would like to share? IP: Logged |

Many years ago, I remember my stepfather had this terrible pain when he flew, I remember him crying at one point. I think he would take an antihistime (sp) like 30 mins before he flew and that seemed to help. It's worth a try! Good Luck! IP: Logged |

Thanks for replying PixieDust.I was crying in pain myself...and I cant even bare the thought of it happening again. Taking an antihistamine before take off and landing was also recommended to me by a doctor. I may just have to depend on it for the flight. Im wondering how I can maintain a pressure balance in and outside my eardrum as well...maybe it just has to do with the health of my ears and sinuses. IP: Logged |

My cousin worked for the airlines and told all us kids to yawn purposely several times, chew gum, and pull down on our ear lobes to avoid ear pain while flying- you are talking about flying in planes, now, aren't you?IP: Logged |

Hi tuxedo meow, those tips were recommended for me as well...no amount of yawning, swallowing or chewing helped because I didnt realize how congested and inflammed my sinuses were at the time.Artlovesdawn, I saw the ear/nose/throat specialist after that incident because I had a small hole in my ear drum and thought i might have lost some hearing...I got that tested out, and the results were normal. They didnt know what my hearin was like before so theres not much to compare to. But I do think my hearing changed slightly. I havent heard of ear planes...I'll look for them. Thanks! IP: Logged |

OMG! My room mate is an airline stewardess and she has had tremendous pain and was crying, and even busted her eardrum! All the suggestions that tuxedo mentioned are ones that she uses, as well as Afrin every time before she flies. Her doctor said she may have to have tubes put in if it doesn't get any better. She's so afraid she won't get to fly anymore. Being a stewardess has been a life long dream of hers and she's only been there a year. IP: Logged |

~~bump~~aquaspryt - how's your roommates ear problem? artlovesdawn - again thanks for introducing me to EarPlanes: http://www.cirrushealthcare.com/EarPlanes-C8.aspx Plane relief
Relieve the "popping" you get from that nasty air pressure in jet cabins, with EarPlanes, cute little earplugs shaped like pagodas. Made of soft hypoallergenic silicon, the disposable EarPlanes ($8.25) come with a patented filter that regulates air pressure. Put them in before takeoff or landing. No more gum-chewing (or silent screaming). A smaller model ($7.50) is available for children ages 1 to 11. http://www.earplanes.com. Air Travel “Ear Tips”
- Take a decongestant 24 hours before flying to keep air passages and ears clear.
- Chew gum or drink fluids through altitude changes during flight to equalize the pressure in the middle ear.
- Use a set of EarPlanes™ for take-offs and landings or altitude changes during the flight to equalize the pressure in the middle ear.
- Hold the nose and swallow to alleviate ear pressure in the middle ear.
- Use ¼ percent Neo-Synephrine nasal spray shortly after boarding the aircraft and again 45 minutes before the aircraft is due to land to keep the nasal passages open.
- Try not to fly when you have a cold or upper respiratory infection, as you are more likely to experience ear problems.
