Hello all,

I'd really like to know what you think are the best - healthiest, contraceptive methods are out there? Are there any alternative ones that I should know about? I'm based in the UK so I'm not sure how these differ from ones available overseas?

I'm 29 and I've only used condoms as a contraceptive. I kinda got put off the pill whilst watching someone close to me have major fertility problems because of it. Just one case and my personal choice. I'd really like to find and try one that works, with the least side effects, even if it is a recommended pill from you guys.

Thanks, I look forward to finding out,
Sheaa

Here's a link to a short earlier topic discussing different birth control options for nursing moms, as safety is very important during that time as well.

Hi Sheaa...how are you darlin'?

You're wise to stay away from birth control pills. I used to take them, but after my own research, I quit quite a long while ago. Too many side effects, from the mild (weight gain) to more serious (blood clots). Even the main stream media recently reported the latest: use of birth control pills lowers the libido. I'm sure a simple google search for birth control pill FAQs will be quite illuminating.

Check into the cervical cap. It's available in some cities/areas of the U.S., but I'm not sure about Europe. For some reason, I think it may have been developed there, but that could be a faulty memory. Unfortunately I don't have time at the moment to do the research for you. You have to get fitted for a cervical cap from your gynecologist, and it is exactly what it sounds like: a cap that fits over your cervix. While it cannot be left in indefinitely, you can keep it in/on for hours at a time, safely, which makes it convenient. It is also considered to be as reliable as the diaphragm when used correctly.

Hope this helps...just do a little research and you will find the method/s that work best for you.

There's also the Fertility Awareness Method. Basically it's just tuning into your body's signals (basal body temp(upon waking up), cervical mucus, etc.) so you know when you are ovulating and then calculating your fertile days based on that. It does require daily note keeping but it's easy once you get into the habit of it. It's fascinating to see your body's rhythyms mapped out.. it also gives insight as to how your hormones affect your moods.. really interesting. You can either abstain during your fertile days or use a condom.

Hello ladies, thanks for the input. I think it's wise for me to try something other than condoms now.

Thanks for the link Eleanore I knew it must have been discussed before somewhere! I indeed have bought a "plastic cookie" but was kinda nervous about losing it(!)

Dear Trillian! Long time no speak, I'm well thank you. I read something on the Saturn Return recently and thought of the advice you gave me on the phone a while back!

Yes indeed, the side effects have worried me and I undertook a web search on them and indeed it was quite illuminating! One of the leaflets I had even mentioned cancer which was suprising. I'll be going to the docs tomorrow and will re-ask about the options, like the cervical cap.. I was thinking about the implant too? It seemed to have fewer / almost no side effects but know noone that has used one. I shall let you know what I choose. I think charting how it affects me should be interesting to look back on!

Hello Harpyr! Yes I was thinking about this last night in fact. Thanks for the link, I think it could work because I am so in tune with my body's patterns - I'm also very interested in how hormones affect moods, which is why I'm so concerned about choosing the right contraceptive method for me.

I tried googling for new birth control method but it didn't eem to bring anything up that we didn't know about, so wondered if anyone knew of anything about to break through the market? I guess if anything's new though, there's been no usage / feedback on it yet..

I've also heard about an hormone injection which you go to your doctor for after a few weeks for a top-up... not sure how effective or new that is, has anyone tried it?
