Anyone here familiar with it and its uses?
I am seriously considering ordering both food and non food grade.

I have read up on it but wanted to know if anyone here at LL has used it for any reasons.
quote:
Diatomaceaous Earth

Also called fossil shell flour, diatomaceous earth has many health benefits. Because of its high silicon content, fossil shell flour is known for strengthening the nails, hair and teeth.

“DE is an abbreviation of the words 'Diatomaceous Earth,' which is a fossilized deposit of microscopic shells created by one celled plants called Diatoms. These plants inhabit all the waters of the earth, and serve as the basic food for aquatic life, just as grass is the basic food for land animals. Some of these deposits, shifted to dry land, are extremely important to humans.” (Janet 'J.D.' Sands )

From shadowridgedonkeys.com: 100% pure food grade Diatomaceous Earth from a fresh water source is 100% NON-TOXIC and FDA approved for internal and external use and has a rating of Food Codex Grade. Suggested feeding instructions below. Adjustments may be made based on your own experience and the weight of the animal.

Guidelines:

Humans 1 heaping teaspoon stirred in cup of water, mixed in food or in anything you like.
Children 1/2 to 1 level teaspoon per day.

Kittens 1/2 teaspoon
Cats 1/2 to 1 teaspoon

Puppies 1/2 to 1 teaspoon
Dogs under 50 lbs. 2 teaspoons
Dogs over 50 lbs. 1 tablespoon
Dogs over 100 lbs. 2 tablespoons

Cattle 2% by weight of dry ration
Calves 4 grams in morning
Dairy Cows 2% by weight of dry ration (4 oz. )

Chickens 5% in feed, also add to dusting boxes

Goats 1% to 2% in grain

Hogs 2% of weight in feed ration

Horses 1/2 - 1 cup in daily ration

Sheep 1% to 2% in ground grain

For effective use, the DE must be fed long enough to catch all the newly hatching eggs or cycling through the lungs and back to the stomach. A minimum of 60 days is suggested at 2% of dry weight of the grain ration. It doesn't have to be exact. More will not be harmful, but less may not give you the results expected.

For large animals, DE may also be offered "free choice" as long as dispenser is protected from wind. Use on beddings, rub into fur and mix in with salt and or minerals for livestock

Diatomaceous Earth will not harm warm-blooded animals or earthworms. Earthworm farmers use it to treat their worm beds for parasites, fungus gnat larva etc. Earth worms are structurally different from insects in that they can actually digest particles of DE. The particles are then eliminated in their castings.

What veterinarians, researchers, integrated pest management, and users of quality DE report:
• Improved digestion for all mammals. Absorbs viruses and bacteria-passes them for the body. Kills stomach and intestinal parasites better than toxic poisons-with no side effects.
• Improves bone structure
• Gives hair more body and shiny appearance
• Remove harmful bacteria from the upper intestinal tract
• Absorbent -useful for spill clean-up. The U.S. Center for Disease Control recommends it to clean up toxic liquid spills.
• Beneficial as a soil additive-safe for earthworms
• Reduce fly hatch. Keeps fly larvae from developing in manure, noticeably reducing the fly population
• Stop animals from licking holes, chewing fence posts. Cows from eating dirt.
• With feed for chickens and turkeys - makes shells harder, reduced mortality rate, reduce odors, dries droppings quickly, reduces fly hatch.
• As a barrier against slugs and snails.
• To remove odors – shake on manure, urine, vomit, or spills to absorb odors and moisture
• Reduces moisture and odors in barns, stalls, coops, kennel, litter boxes, compost piles, and other moist areas.
• In Europe and Asia this product is used extensively as a health and beauty product for hair, skin, nails, bones, and joints.
• As a feed additive for all mammals: reduce the smell of manure, reduce fly hatch, It is believed to remove viruses, and give the benefits from the 14 trace minerals.
• Reduce vet bills up to 75%
• Use in facial masks to absorb excess oils
• Added at a rate of 2% to pet food in the bag or bin. Prevents feed from getting stale or moldy.
• Fed to hogs or calves with scours - stops scours after one feeding
• Kills many bugs by dehydration-environmentally safe
• Use to dust animals and animal bedding
• Decreased mastitis
• Use in cat litter to absorb moisture and odors
• Lightly rub food grade diatomaceous earth into pets coat and bedding
• Mix into soil for a soil conditioner. Will retain over 6 times its weight in moisture and will release it as the plants need it. It may also help with nematodes.
• On lawns, will retain moisture and prevent drought damage. Adds nitrogen to the soil.
• On camping trips. Dust the ground where you intend to place your tent and camp area.
• Converts feed better
• Better coat and hoof condition
• Promotes shinier coats
• Reduces overall animal stress
• Colon cleanser
• Helps detox heavy metals, e-coli, bacteria, viruses, etc.
• Completely safe and non-toxic
• Stimulates basic metabolism
• Antifungal properties – good for garden fungal growth
• Dust under and behind appliances, in window sills, door thresholds and in attics and walls
• Used in seed and grain storage to keep dry and mold free indefinitely. Will allow seeds to sprout after years in storage.
• On lawns, will retain moisture and prevent drought damage
• Keeps fly larvae from developing in manure, noticeably reducing the fly population. (Neighbors no longer complain about flies)
• In cattle- increased milk production
• In cattle- decreased mastitis
• Rub it onto bug bites and Poison Ivy or Oak, relieves the itch. Use dry or make a paste.
• Sprinkle the ground liberally on and around tree trunks, also may be painted with a mixture of DE and water.
• In food animals and dairy cattle- no withdrawal prior to use of products

OK, nevermind. Found it.

The typical chemical composition of oven dried diatomaceous earth is 80 to 90% silica, with 2 to 4% alumina (attributed mostly to clay minerals) and 0.5 to 2% iron oxide.

I've never heard of it being used internally, though if they have food grade, I don't see why you couldn't.

The reading I did on cancer, leads me, and many others, to believe all cancer is nutrition deficiencies. That our food eating habits have evolved way to fast in the last 200 years or so, for our bodies to adjust.

I suppose that DE being a highly concentrated source of minerals, would help with that.

If you get some Lexx, let me know how it works.

I know this is from an old post, I've been spending time reading them. Anyway, I've been using food grade D-Earth since October. I went with a friend to get her blood analized and it was suggested to her to use it, so that's why I did too, it's hard to say what benefits I've seen as I'm generally in good health, but will continue to take it as I figure it can't hurt.

It is supposed to be really good for you. I bought it to kill red ants but someone told me I should try it too. Get food grade only.

I use the food grade stuff to get rid of hobo spiders and thatching ants (they deliver a nasty stinging bite, and they had virtually taken over our back yard when we moved in).

It works really well for me, but the unfortunate part (imo) is that it also kills a lot of other little critters (reasonably harmless beetles, snails, bees, etc.) so I try to only dust it around targeted areas.

I've tried taking it internally and using it on my skin. I didn't notice anything amazing, but who knows...

Is it abrasive to lungs or if it gets on contact lenses?
Is it OK to use around cats?
I know the article said it was; but I am not sure I trust it.
And I wonder if it kills the 1998 Asian invader, The Stink Bug?
They are absolutely horrible nasty and yes, very disgusting odor. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_marmorated_stink_bug

I did not notice anything positive or obvious when I tried the food grade on/in myself; except some skin irritation.
May try it again sometime.

@ Lexx

Food grade is safe for people as well as mammals, and I believe amphibians also. We've used it around our kitties, and they were completely okay with it. It should also help them to be clear of bugs themselves.

Non-food grade is definitely harmful to pets and other creatures. It's mostly used in pools, but that's about all I know of its purposes.

I would try not to breathe in even the food grade stuff, though. It does say to be careful about that, but I personally don't use a particle mask or anything when I dust it, I just try to keep it out of my face.

I've used it with my contacts in before, but they're soft contacts (not the gas permeable lenses I used to have).

Overall, I find it to be incredibly safe for everyone (besides ants and anything with an exoskeleton). But yeah, try not to breathe it in or get it in your eyes. If your stink bugs have an exoskeleton, it should work on them. It doesn't work immediately, but it definitely works.

I'll try to post some links in a bit.

You are most welcome!
So happy to have you back!

But definitely be careful about breathing in the DE or getting it in your eyes if you have breathing issues or are prone to allergic reactions or anything like that.

It might be best to wear glasses and a particle mask while you use it, just to be on the safe side?

I don't believe the food grade is safe for human consumption - personal opinion based on personal experience, even though some people recommend it.

Try the powder, not capsules, of Zeolite by Zeohealth. Toxins are trapped and carried out of your body. Bentonite liquid detox is also a good product. It comes highly recommended by a health professional i know. You may want to check with your own health professional for protocol unique to you.

Diatomaceous earth works great for pest control, especially fleas. If you use it outdoors it has to be dry to work; it can't get wet in the rain.

I have the bentonite clay powder for mixing with organic apple cider vinegar and using as a face mask or body mask to detox externally, and I LOVE it. I haven't come across the kind that you can eat or drink, but I'm considering ordering some online.

I made some for my mom as part of her Christmas present, as she had all of her lymph nodes removed decades ago, and her arm swells up terribly because of it.

When she uses the clay mask on her arm it tends to hurt less. I always feel very rejuvenated after I use it.

But yeah, I only use the DE for pest control when I feel that it's necessary.

Kao-pectate is Bentonite.

They also use it for drilling wells, as it is safe.

Weird...I wonder why people consider it to be cleansing/detoxifying?

Pluto Survivor, I have to disagree with you, food grade was recommended by a blood analizer, for a friend, we've both been using it for more than 6 months, I also give it to my husband and my cat. All of us have had no ill effects from it.
In fact my husband did have stomach "aches" before taking it and has noticed an improvement.
